How To Stay Safe In Bear Country (Grizzly and Black Bear)

Stay safe in bear county. The best way to prevent a negative encounter with a black bear or grizzly bear is to stay away from the areas they occupy. But with such a large population of black bears and a growing population of grizzlies in the lower 48, that can be unreasonable.
So in order to stay safe and enjoy time in the country that bears inhabit, it's important to follow a few simple guidelines in order to mitigate the risk as much as possible. In this video, Marcus Hockett goes over several best practices while on a backcountry bear hunting and fishing trip.
From a proper bear hang, to meat handling, and portable electric fences; there are plenty of opportunities to do everything you can to lower the risk of a negative encounter.

Tip #1 Carry pepper spray and wear bells when in Bear country. #2 How to tell Black Bear poop from Griz poop.Grizzly poop smells like pepper and has little bells in it :)

All but the largest grizzly bears CAN climb trees. I learned this when hunting in north Alberta. It might depend on where you are as to whether or not the DO climb.

A good way to secure field dressing and campsites is to use a portable electric fence. The lightest one out there weighs only 2.4 lbs and it’s powerful enough to deter a hungry griz. Just a suggestion

Awesome video. I am an avid nature lover and will be going up in the big horns setting up an elk camp for a group of hunters shortly. This is not a solo mission and we will be on horse back but we will be camping out for a few days while we set up the camp. I know plenty about bears and other wildlife but I don't think it is ever too much to make sure you're prepared. This time two years ago some elk hunters were killed by a grizzly, we'll be in the same area. Never a bad idea to be prepared.

good information, but FYI.....that bear fence (I had it, bear experience with it) will only deter a curious bear, Not a DETERMINED BEAR. I built my bear fence, under 6 lbs with all parts (incl 6-D cell batteries), with 10x the Joule power of that Udap bear fence. Besides sense of security around backcountry camp, this has also protected my bagged game meat left overnight each of the last 2 years. So powerful, you wouldn't even chance touching it.

I've come to believe beyond a certain amount of prevention and avoidance it's just damn luck if an encounter occurs and what the bear's attitude is. I've had over a hundred Black Bear encounters and three Griz encounters. And they just vary so damn much in temperment and attitude and intentions. From terrified of humans to "what the fk are you looking at?". Bottom line is Black Bear gets surley, kill it. Griz gets surley, kill it. If they don't run immediately after I yell, bam. I'm not in the business of figuring out which bears are serious or not and I use pepper to spice food not to dissuade gigantic predators. Too many people depend on me to play naturalist . This may not be politically correct but I know as a fact that's how a lot of us play. In the back country help is forever away and even a moment's hesitation can be the difference with an animal that can cover 50 yards in a few seconds. I've seen the fkers run full speed up close and personal, thankfully away from me, and when you see that up close and personal, if you don't realize hesitation with a Griz is like flipping a coin for a tomorrow, you are delusional.

Trout, I am a fishing guide here on Kodiak island in Alaska, try fishing with our giant brown bears, talk about getting your attention, fortunately they for the most are pretty tolerant here in the summer because they have so much salmon to eat, some still get pretty aggressive if they want your fishing spot?

Thank you for a very informative video; one minor correction though, the statistics on bear attacks on humans in North America place the black bear above the grizzly in numbers by far. Please don’t give the viewers the impression that black bears aren’t dangerous or don’t attack humans very often. Not true. Thanks.
@Amber-tx8nv
@Amber-tx8nv 4 года назад
That's because the black bear population is much higher and they live near densely populated areas such as in New Jersey. If you run into a Grizzly in the wild, they are MUCH more likely to try and neutralize you.
@madwe2269
@madwe2269 4 года назад
Dang it's almost like the number of run ins with black bears is multiple times higher. For the same number of encounters, grizzlies are far more likely to attack

If a grizzly bear attacks you, protect your head and neck but pretend to be dead, if possible. Most of the time, grizzly bears attack either because they feel cornered or because they are protecting something (food or cubs mostly). If you play dead, they will likely lose interest. If a black bear attacks you, fight back as hard as you can and with whatever weapons you have in your possession. Way too often, if a black bear attacks, it sees you as a food item. If you don't fight back, you will be dead. Yes, black bears may also attack because they are surprised or to protect cubs, but that can quickly change, if the bear decides you are easy prey.

I have always hung my food but I will be picking up a bear bag they are nice but are not accepted in all parks and I can't remember but I know on the PCT and bear canister is required there is one section of the trail there regulations need to catch up and approve the bear bag.

Thanks Marcus. 40 caliber semi auto is good defense also. Holds more rounds than the six shooter 44 mag. I would pack both plus a micro CCW 9mm too I think. Plus the rifle you hunt with and bear spray. Also when you hunt bear Marcus, are bear attracted to a fresh dead bear kill as much or as easy as other dead animals?

what about moving the gut pile away from the carcass instead of carcass away from gut pile? would this work? i thought about it but never done it... biodegradable bags and just dump it somewhere else... way easier than moving lots of meat by yourself taking several trips! any ideas???

Leave the carcass take the quarters to hang from tree back strap and loin or first trip out keep your head on a swivel you must be loaded for bear

Bears do NOT like electricity at all. We have seen it first hand. A little bite from a hot wire that a human can take fine. a bear will turn inside out to get away. Just put a simple pet hot wire around a trash can and video it. You will laugh. It's like they get shot.

I would love to hunt out west someday but having an encounter with a mountain grizzly bear gives me pause every time. I have seen videos online where hunters tried to scare off a mamma grizzly bear and no dice man! The thing just charged them at full speed forcing the hunters to turn the rifle on her and fire. What complicates it even more is that some black bears can actually look like brown bears so if you are not an expert at distinguishing between the two of them you might make a wrong choice and end up on the menu. Then there's the whole dilemma of carrying a personal sidearm. Your boss Randy Newberg said in one of his live internet streams recently that no one in his hunting party is allowed to carry a loaded firearm. I understand the safety issues around that but if you don't have a loaded pistol on your person you aren't going to be able to defend against a charging grizzly. I have seen those things run and they are fast! You won't have time to load the pistol or a rifle before the bear is on top of you.

So, why the fuck would you want to kill a bear? I hunt kangaroos in Australia, but they are just herbivores like goats in plague populations.
