I used to have sentlok bibs and I hated them. Too bulky and awkward, and I always got cold. I now use Firstlite, and they are the best warm weather hunting clothing I've ever had! Good video! I didn't think about feet and hands getting cold as a result of core temp. dropping. No sweating is the key!

Feet and hands getting cold is NOT necessarily indicative of poor core temperature maintenance. There are many physiological conditions that cause blood vessels to constrict in cold temperatures. If you have problems keeping extremities warn, you may have Reynauds or one of several other conditions. If your core is getting too cold you will know it... your entire body will feel cold and eventually cause you to shiver.

I left the stand today because I was so frozen I wasn’t sure if I could climb back down let alone make a shot. I definitely need to rethink my cold weather gear, mind you it was minus 10 windchill. Thanks for the video I didn’t realize your hands and feet feel cold because of your core retaining heat.

Glad it helped! We had some nasty weather here today. Got about 8 inches of lake affect snow and in the low 20s (not sure what windchill was but was prob single digits). We stayed warm, but it wasn’t cozy warm!

Hi...I'm just skimming through media to see what's working for other guys. Ironically, your approach to warmth is almost identical to mine. I found the MT50 a bit too noisy and bulky, and instead utilize Cabelas Stand Hunter Coverall...in my view my best hunt clothing purchase I've ever made. In 30 degree high 20 degree low I wear a moisture wicking underlayer and the Cabelas Stand Hunter Coverall. Period. And Cabelas Fleece Balaclava for head...that's it. If colder, I throw on one more very light layer of fleece. The challenge with this system is not getting sweated up for longer walks (1/2 mile or greater). Then I usually pack the coverall. Sadly, with the Bass Pro shop merger, Cabelas discontinued the Stand Hunter Coverall and lots of other really good products. And btw, feet and hands getting cold is NOT necessarily indicative of poor core temperature maintenance. There are many physiological conditions that cause blood vessels to constrict in cold temperatures. Overall a nice job. Thanks for sharing.

I couldn’t agree more about the MT50 whitetail extreme line. I have worn this stuff in 0 degree weather the last 2 weeks coyote hunting, with nothing but a medium weight set of Minus 33 Merino wool thermals. You don’t want to walk to your stand wearing this stuff though, It will sweat you quickly!

So true about not putting on everything you own and then hiking into your hunting area. You will be soaking wet and never recover from the dampness in my opinion. Wear as little as you possibly can while understanding that your effort in walking will keep you warm and slowly add layers as you cool down from the walk and most importantly make sure you dry out your inner layers first even if it means being a little chilly for a few moments as they dry out before covering them with another layer. Again, you are so right about not getting soaking wet with sweat just getting to your hunting area.

The boots look awesome too, I'd like to see some close up shots of how the bibs fasten around the boots at the bottom cuffs but I guess we'll see that in future videos when you take some more close up shots of you lying in wait in the woods (I love those sequences in your videos). muddyriverdogz I agree. That’s all I used when younger but couldn’t wear my heavier coveralls until the temp was freezing or below. I now have a heavy insulated jacket and Browning bibs like he describes, but I don’t believe that they are as warm as coveralls. The coveralls trap the heat inside whereas the bibs allow the heat to rise and escape. A turtle neck also traps the body heat inside.

First off when your feet get cold,you can have 50 layers of theramls on your core and it doesn't matter.
@WeekendWoodsmen
@WeekendWoodsmen 5 лет назад
The point is your feet are getting cold first because your core is starting to cool so if you have 50 layers on your core and your feet are still getting cold, then you must not have great layers on.
@shawnprivate5322
@shawnprivate5322 5 лет назад
No,your core has zero to do with your feet getting cold.If that's the case why do they use insulation,I was trained to keep warm,but your analogy of your feet is cold because of your core,is bogus.Idk were you got your info,but I'll challenge anyone to this.
@WeekendWoodsmen
@WeekendWoodsmen 5 лет назад
You are 100% wrong, when your body gets cold, it’s survival mechanism is to shift priority to keeping the core warm. It does that by reducing circulation to your extremities and increasing the circulation in your core. Therefore, when your body reduces circulation to your extremities they start to get cold, therefore your hands and feet getting cold have a LOT to do with your core getting cold. You won’t feel your core getting cold until your hands and feet start getting cold. That’s why they get cold first.

$350 may be expensive for your warm weather hunting. I do not consider 20 to be cold. I'm an ole geezer. I'll say I am closer to 70 than 60. I get to my stand 1 hour before legal hunting time and stay till legal quitting time. That means I am in my stand from 6am till 5:25pm, only getting out if mother nature says it time for #2. That's 11 1/2 hours in my stand not 3 to 4 hours. You want to stay warm in just about any weather? How about 42 below and 35 MPH winds like I did last year in South Dakota. I was in a ground (made from hay bales) blind for 11 hours. I bought my bibs and coat 20 years ago, custom made to fit me. I am rather tall at 6' 6", try to find a 42" inseam. I wear a 36" inseam but my bibs are 42" so when I sit they are still over most of my boots. Contact King of the Mountain and ask about their Standmaster outfit in Blowdown pattern. Twenty years ago mine was, you sitting down, lol, $1200.00 . Wind or rain will NOT go through it. It's 100% wool and no it does not itch. There is a rubber lining in the bibs. As you know (or should know) wool still keeps you warm even if it gets wet. It just gets heavier. If you layer underneath like they tell you, you won't freeze. Now, this outfit is NOT made for a lot of walking. If you want to stay in a stand ALL DAY, the Standmaster is THE outfit to buy.

Sitka is incredibly overrated. @WeekendWoodsmen 6 лет назад
You might not be able to sit all day in it, but it will certainly keep you warm longer. You will also likely need to put more layers on. Typically even when it is in the 20s I do not put many layers on. We had a few week stretch last year that was well below freezing and I never got overly cold. Here’s a hunt where I shot a doe in that cold! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a0zPbMz9iB0.html

Me too. I just stumbled on zippo handwarmer. You can wear it around your neck under your coat. Itll stay lit 12 hours. Im worried about fumes since it uses liquid fuel. But im thinking about using the scentless, disposible hand warmer packs in tbe same way

People differ in how easily their body gets cold. Your Cabelas outerwear is nice, but not magic. If you can wear it and only 1 or 2 layers under it in 20 F weather and sit still on stand for hours and not get cold, then you are one of the lucky people that does not get cold easily. Therefore, your advice would not apply to me or others like me. I think it is important to realize that for others because they will do what you do and get bad results. I have gear just as nice as Cabelas. Yesterday, it was 20 F and windy. To stay on stand, I probably had $1,000 worth of clothes on (if I bought full price, which I don't). This included windstopper layers, high loft goose down, boot blankets, chemical warmers, expensive base layers, etc. I had 5 layers top and 4 bottom. I was relatively warm and was able to sit still in a treestand for the full day without moving, but I looked like the Michelin man, had to wear an arm guard to shoot my bow with all that, and had to pack half of that junk in in a huge dry bag fastened to my tree stand.

That is definitely a lot of stuff! Have you ever looked into a heated vest? The main point isn’t to put on a suit, it is to do what you need to do to keep your core warm. Keeping your core warm will help keep your extremities warm. If your core gets cold, your extremities are going to be cold no matter what you put on them. Good luck out there!

@@WeekendWoodsmen I use hothands adhesive bodywarmers. I'll put 3 on my upper body on my base layer. I'm like this because I'm tall and thin with low body fat. Also, I quit smoking in my late 30s, so I might have residual circulation impacts.

Yea this is good info but when you have poor circulation and your 60 years old and on high blood pressure meds that thin your blood. Nothing works. Very good.

You don't need camo to kill deer especially in a stand. Just buy some earth color cold weather gear that's cheaper then camo.
@WeekendWoodsmen
@WeekendWoodsmen 4 года назад
That is probably true as long as a deer doesn’t catch any movement. If they do, being a solid blob will make it easier for them to silhouette you in the tree making it less likely that you get away with a mistake

That’s not very much for a full top and bottom cold gear set. It also cuts down on the number of layers you have to buy to go under.

Being poor folks, we make a type of these using cheap sleeping bags and a couple of tubes of Super Glue. My daughter got some good use out of the one we made for her many years ago when she first started going out with me to the stands. There is a great deal to be said for the Field Expedient mind set for us plain old Red Neck hunters. Hope you are in better shape cash flow wise than we. I don't mean to whine. I just hope you can outfit your family well and make those lifetime worth of memories all the better.

I would definitely consider looking into one of those body warmers which should allow you to keep your core warm using fewer layers and lighter outer shell. Unfortunately we do not use any so I can’t recommend a good one for you. You other option is to increase your layering, but without a good outer shell you are likely either not going to be able to move (if you are a bow hunter) or will still get cold eventually.

Army surplus sold through Ebay is the cheapest route for cold weather gear of decent quality. Also craigslist and second hand stores will sometimes have good quality stuff for cheap

Just put a cheap windbreaker suit underneath your camo. Pants and top. And thermals underneath windbreaker. Wind breaker is key to staying warm all the time

This is not a promotional video. We gave tips on some common misconceptions of feeling cold in your hands and feet, and gave tips on the keys to prevent that. We are in no way affiliated with or get anything from any of the products we use in this video, we just honestly review what we believe in and what works. I sat all day Saturday in 20 degree temps and 15 MPH winds and never got cold. So say what you want but it is not promotional it is educational.
