This week we're taking a closer look at getting vertical on the stern of your kayak. If you're hoping to get out in a half-slice and dial in staring at the sky, this is the tutorial for you.
If you have any suggestions of videos you'd like to see, feel free to let me know in the comments.

I’ve often been told lean back more but watching this and others it’s more of a crunch sit up and leaning back flattens the boat. I get (I think), just need to do it lol
@MatthewBrookKayaking

Yeah, leaning back simply doesn't work, especially in longer boats. You've got to get that core engaged!

Hi Matt, do you know how to apply this to slalom gates? Love to be able to mix up a bit of freestyle and slalom in a full slice

Hi Billy. To some degree, yes, though I'm not a slalom paddler by background. Very happy to put together a tutorial (though it may have to wait until I can get somewhere with gates; as long as we don't get another post-Christmas lockdown, I ought to be able to in the coming weeks!).

@@MatthewBrookKayaking Ah cheers man, I think an upstream gate into a down river wave wheel or something like that would be very cool on a artificial course (split wheel through a downstream gate is a good challenge too)

@@billyb3689 no worries. Hmmm, cool ideas! Definitely some bits to play with there!

Hi Matt, love these videos and thanks for such detail and consistency. A question…I don’t have a half slice, only a JK Rockstar and paddle more flat water than moving. I’m trying to learn pirouettes in my play boat, but I hardly ever see this move done in these short freestyle boats. Am I beating my head against a wall, or can I do this move in my boat in still water and/or on eddy lines?
@MatthewBrookKayaking

Hi Jamie. Thanks for the encouragement. Yes, absolutely you can do this in a shorter boat. Check out this tutorial: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I1jybOAsF0Y.html for a few pointers!

Would you elaborate on what is meant by keeping the upstream edge more open than downstream edge?
@MatthewBrookKayaking
@MatthewBrookKayaking Год назад
When the stern is engaged underwater, it is common to complete an edge transition, which releases the stern and bring the boat flat again. The aim here is to avoid that edge transition, keep the hull flat/continually driving deeper, so that the boat stays vertical. I hope that helps.

@@MatthewBrookKayaking Thanks. At times I've thought of it as crossing the eddyline, engaging the upstream edge and keep rotating the hull towards that eddyline. Wondering if this is also what you mean by keeping the upstream edge 'open'- that is open to the downstream flow?
