ABOUT ME:
Thanks for visiting my channel, I hope you enjoyed the video! I founded Caterpillar Cross Stitch in 2015 when I tried desperately for months to find a modern baby sampler my mum could stitch for new baby Felicity that would fit in with her simple, contemporary nursery. I love cross stitch, running, baking fruit cakes, drinking gin, eating salted caramel ice cream and most crafts!
See you soon and happy stitching! Sally x

More than 40 years ago, my husband asked me to stitch a project for his brother. I almost died when I saw that there were background trees where the leaves were hundreds and hundreds of French knots! Needless to say I got quite good at them. Your technique is lovely!

Thanks so much for this tutorial! So clear and concise. I've always hated french knots and avoid them as much as possible but this makes them much less daunting.

Thank you, Marie, for a wonderful video on french knots. Would you consider doing a video on attaching beads? I find beads very daunting.

Thank you for this video on French Knots. Your instructions were clear, concise, and easy to follow. You have helped demystify French knots for me. I would love to see instructions on other specialty stitches. I know Caterpillar may not use them in their patterns but you are so good at these videos. Thank you.

I understand now how to do French Knots, but I’d like to know how to end them. Once you’ve done them, what’s next? How does it look in the back? Mine have to be done isolated

Thanks for the demo. I've done french knots before, but liked your demo stressing the fact you need to hold the threads taut.

Two questions...1) How did you secure the thread in the back before and after making the french knot? 2) Does it matter which direction you wrap the thread around the needle? Thanks for sharing this technique!!

Hi Donna, thanks so much for watching! 1/ when the French knots are over existing stitches which is the majority of the time, I’ll start the thread by running it behind those stitches. If it’s a standalone French knot, it’s a bit of a pickle and if I’m completely honest with you, I just make a quilters knot and clip the tail! 2/ I’ve never tried to make a French knot in the other direction and this is what I’ve seen in all embroidery tutorials too. Give it a try though - as long as it looks like a French knot in the end, it doesn’t matter which way you spin it! 😊 Happy stitching 🌸 Marie

Thanks for this great instructions ... I can never get my French knots to work. Now I realise it's because I'm letting go of the thread too early. Just a side question, what is the stand you are using? It looks really handy.

Wonderful tutorial Marie! I’m not a fan of French knots, but you make it look so doable, I may try next time a pattern calls for one. Does it matter which way you wrap the thread around the needle?

Hi Karen, thank you so much for watching, I’m so glad it’s been helpful ☺️ I’ve not tried to wrap the thread the other way so I’m not too sure - however just give it a go, as long as it looks like French knot as a result, there is no right or wrong way ☺️ Happy stitching 🌸 Marie
