Awesome! Are you going to make the checkerboard quilt?

Perfect timing, I am just ready to quilt a top which I plan to do a feather design inside 7" blocks and I was not certain if I should stitch around each block after or before the inside feather design. On this one you are doing the perimeter before the inside, but on other quilts, I think you did the perimeter after the inside or as you quilt the inside. So, I am still confused. Do we all the entire ditch stitch before we do the insides - or do we do each block by block moving around the quilt? Boy, am I lost..... Love your videos - you and Josh are great!

Honestly this depends entirely on the quilt, how you're feeling, and what sounds best to you at the time! It honestly doesn't matter. Sometimes I quilt the ditches first, sometimes I quilt the outline of the design first. This is one of those things you just have to gain experience with by trying it out and seeing what happens. Does that make sense?

Leah Day Leah, if you say it does not matter which is done first, then I believe you! I believe everything you say. One more thing. Which ever I do first....if I do the perimeter stitching first, would I do the entire quilt first and then go back and do the inside quilting? Or, can I just do each block entirely and then move to the next block? Ugh! I am so regretting this ...... 🙁 I feel so dumb...Thank you!!

I see that you quilt in the ditch and mentioned that you could stitch quarter of an inch on either side as you press your seams open. Would you then be making three lines of stitching or just the quarter of an inch either side of the center seam? The fabrics are beautifully designed and I just love the color combination. Thanks for sharing.

You would just be stitching 1/4 inch to one side and 1/4 inch to the other side and missing the ditch completely. That's a bit faster than stitching in the ditch and will secure the quilt just as nicely.

Good tip. I just tried to stitch in the ditch on my little sample quilt block but it just do not look good. It's uneven.. but my bobbin thread looks worst.. So I am currently considering doing this technique instead.

Do you put your feed dogs down when you use a walking foot? Also, I am making a quilt with kids handprints on white fabric, with navy blue sashing. Question: what top thread and bottom thread should I use to stitch in the ditch? Enjoyed your video so much.
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 5 лет назад
Nope, you definitely need your feed dogs for walking foot quilting. Leave them up and set your stitch length to determine the size of your stitches. I would use white thread for stitching in the ditch and I always use the same thread in the top and bobbin of the machine. Far fewer headaches that way!

Hi, great video! I was wondering where you recommend starting the stitch in the ditch? My quilt doesn't have boarders. Should I start in the center, or do quadrants? Thank you
@LeahDay

It really just depends on the quilt. If you have a quilt where ditching makes sense, then yes, I would quilt on a home machine from the center to the outside edges.

I am just learning to machine sew, but whenever I get any bulk under my needle (layers) it seems my machine ( a Brother) really has to hit hard to get through. I am concerned I am doing something wrong that could break my machine. Any advice on what to do to allow thick layers to sew like you do in this video ??

You mentioned that you also have a video of how to tie off & bury your threads. I can’t find the video though. Can you please provide the direct link? Thanks

Unless you want to zigzag, you don't need to adjust your stitch width!

What thread do you use for stitch in the ditch? Thank you.

I love Isacord thread! I use this for all styles of quilting, on my home machines and my longarms. I use it in both the top and bobbin and it's virtually lint free! leahday.com/products/isacord-thread

Welcome Charlotte - These are Pinmoors. Unfortunately we're struggling to get them in stock right now, but hopefully we will be able to carry them again soon.

Do you stretch the quilt out on a quilting frame prior to stitching in the ditch or just pin? Another question, I completed my first quilt top 12x12 blocks with 2 inch strips between. I was just going to stick around the blocks and the diamond in the middle, can I just start from the center square and work my way out without doing lines from top to bottom and side to side?

Great question! It sounds like you need more in depth info about quilt basting. I've shared a very good class on this you can find here: leahday.com/products/basting-basics-workshop

Do you have to stitch in the ditch before you start quilting? I feel like most tutorials do *not* start with SitD....they just start quilting in whatever pattern they’re going to use. This might be because they didn’t pin baste? I am planning on pin basting when I quilt NOT spray basting...thanks!

No, you don't have to stitch in the ditch if you don't want to. It depends entirely on the quilting style. If I'm quilting over the whole quilt with one design, I don't stitch in the ditch. If I'm quilting a different design in each block, like I did with this quilt, then I will stitch in the ditch or echo ditch to create a border or outline between each design.

I am trying to stitch in the ditch with my Bernina walking foot on my flannel quilt. the thread keeps breaking. new needle stitch length 3, clean machine. Can you give me any clues as to what may be causing the breakage.
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 6 лет назад
Hmm...It might be the number of layers, it might be the thickness of the flannel. Have you tried Echo Ditching instead - that's stitching 1/4 inch away from the ditch instead of right in the ditch. It's faster and easier. My other suggestion would be to lower your stitch length and try a different thread. Then if that doesn't work, try a different needle.

Leah Day thanx Leah. It’s pretty strange. I can stitch with my 97 foot but not the walking foot. I’m using 50 wt aurafil on top and bottom line in the bobbin. 80 needle. I will mix things up a bit and give it another try. All seams were pressed open to avoid bulk. I had a Longarmer baste it. I’ll see what she recommends too. Thanx again👍🏻

Are you out of the Batik heart block fabric? It's not even listed in your shop for sale.

Unfortunately it's all sold out! I'm planning to recreate this fabric on Spoonflower as a printed panel instead.
