Nice video and great tip. I had a horse years ago that loved to buck. When someone told me this i worked like a charm. One thing that I learned from someone though about that horse was the saddle that i was using was slightly twisted. It was putting uneven pressure on the horses back. Once the saddle was sorted the horse was a different animal. Turning the horse when they wanted to buck was a game changer though.

My mare did this when I bought her as a new 5 year old last year. She was NJ broke in a fox hunt environment, and would turn her head at the rail when asked for canter, and cow kicked and bucked. She's lovely and motivated but I could hear her teeth grind and she was anxious. I didn't canter for 2 months after when I first fell off. If you held her back at all, she'd buck a fit. I let her get comfortable, and one day she offered and I accepted. She was heavy in the bit, but good. Let her go half around, stopped, praised when she stopped. She had a serious issue if not stopping until her head was turned into a fence before, so having her accept the seat was so big. Now we canter almost every day, and she hasn't bucked in 3 months. I didn't have instruction until last week for 14 years. She is about to turn 6. Just takes the time. And patience.

We used to call that "crowhopping". The difference being the horse doesn't put their head down and go into a full-on buck. We had a big pinto pony that would do that, named Cloud. Cloud wasn't mean but stubborn as all get out and would crowhop like there was no tomorrow if he didn't like the game plan. If I didn't learn the value of persistence and determination from anything else I learned it from Cloud. We never were able to fully resolve it. I like your suggestions.

I had a mare given to me that bucked all off. When she came,I had no eye contact with her for 9 months. During that time, I round penned her. Showered her off& put her back in the stall. Finally in the 10 month she started to come &associate with me I stayed with the same procedure, then got on. I walked her for 1 month. Trot work in round pen then started in ring. When I went to canter her finally,I could feel her back was as tight as banjo strings. At that point bucking started. Bad bucking.leave the ground off all fours,up in the air about 6feet or so. At that point I had no control cause she would bolt &leave the ground. At that point I went back to the barn,and put a snaffle in her mouth with a slow twist&drop nose band. Went back out immediately, and asked for the canter in same spot. She cut loose&I snatched her on the second leap. I talked to a previous groom,and mentioned how tight her back muscles were. She mentioned that at one point she had tyed-up.bad. After that I put her on Finish Line product,called Thi-Cal. It helped her so much with the tight muscles so much.. But still didn't fix all of the problem with her bucking.When she was done or canter work-she was done.

She would buck . Shes a warmblood. After years of being with her,I could systematically break her buck down.She couldtwist part of her body one way ,and the rest the other. On my 69th birthday, I could s.tell by then when she would buck. So I asked for her canter,and she got me off.When I went off ,she trotted past me . I had a retired trainer with me, who saw it all. She said look at that bitch! She smiled at you!

There is always a root cause behind every behavior issue and it is up to us to peel back the layers, listen to the horse and find the root cause. Pain is the number on cause of behavior issues so we always want to make sure are horses are not in pain before starting any kind of training with them what so ever. After we know they are not in pain then find the root cause and match the exercise to solve the issue. I hope your mare is doing good now. mikehugheshorsetraining.vhx.tv

She looks exactly like my mare! We had the vet out about a week ago to make sure nothing was physically wrong. Im by no means a pro horse trainer, all the kicking and bucking makes me nervous (which i know is bad news). Last time i rode her i did get off but i took her straight into the roundpen and did some hard groundwork for a bit instead of just letting her go😞

Very helpful video! My mare (I don’t own her but I’m taking care of her) has started bucking A LOT this year, it started this summer and I can’t figure out what’s wrong with her! Now today and yesterday was extreme, all she did when I was trying to work with her was bucking, and I feel so helpless :( I’m gonna try different bit and bit less, different saddle and no saddle. Then I think I’ll do as this video and hope for the best! Any more recommendations? And when I lunge her she is completely normal. Maybe she wants a break? Nothing is physically wrong with her..

I’m riding a Percheron mare who has never bucked until the last ride. It had been raining for four days straight, and I did not exercise her before going out on the trail. we typically only walk on the trail, because the owner of the horse is an elderly man with poor balance, and I do not want the horse to develop any bad habits which clearly this is the last thing I want the horse to start getting into the habit of. The horse did buck about three or four times within the first 15 minutes of our ride, and then settled down and walked the rest of our hour long ride. I was basically ignoring the horse when it was acting up and just kept asking the horse to walk forward. I will probably put the horse in the round pen for some light work out of saddle before the next ride but asking how to best handle a situation like this in the future. Thanks

Nice work - thanks for tips and sharing 👍 Question: Why not use a tie down to keep that head down a bit ?? I know they can still buck, but I think it gives em a sense of restriction and also gives their brain something to think about/process vs bucking...???

Good Evening, In correcting this behavior I used the one rein stop where I flexed her neck and moved her hips. It works really well where a horse can not buck and disengage its hips all at the same time

Hmm...looks exactly like my mare! She was always "opinionated" but she had several months off due to a bad respiratory infection and when I finally was able to start riding her again she gained a buck! Had vet out to check her physically and farrier gave her a good trim...still bucks soon as I so much as shift my weight in the saddle. I think it will be a while before she's hitting the trails again😔

Hi Mike, I have a question. I'm not sure why, but 85% of the time I bring my gelding into a canter he bucks. My trainer has always told me to give the reins a snatch and kick him forward, which I tried recently, and after I kicked him forward he just bucked again, worse this time, so I'm not really sure what to do. Is there something else I can try? It’s not multiple bucks like this mare, just one.

My horse goes forward from walk to trot well but wants to buck (read: has bucked me off twice, dramatically) moving from a trot to canter. He is not a lazy horse. I worked with him saddled in the round pen and he bucks and tosses his head in trot to canter transition though this has improved by letting him stop when he transitions smoothly but continue to work when he tosses his head or bucks. Still having trouble in the saddle though. Any suggestions?

I don’t have the best trained eye, but it looks like that saddle doesn’t fit her at all. Glad her back was examined by a vet, but I think the next step would be to have a saddle fitter come out and check to make sure the saddle fits her back and doesn’t put any painful pressure points on her back. Just based on her body type, she looks hard to fit. But the fact that the saddle comes up in the back and even slips over to one side is a giveaway that that saddle does not fit this horse correctly. Otherwise great video, thanks for the tips!

Hi Mike, I have just started my 3 year old warmblood, I turned him out with a lightweight synthetic saddle on to get used to it on his own and the second time I did this, he started trotting then bucking like mad, I dont think it helped he was missing his friends, is the bucking normal at first or am I going to fast? Iv done 3 sessions of groundwork and hes soft and good to handle, thank you
@Marcoeful
@Marcoeful 4 года назад
I go about it in a much different way the first time along with the next 5 or 6 times I put the saddle on and cinch them up. So I don't cinch the horse up tight enough to where I would get on but tight enough to where the saddle won't come off. I do a lot of bit work on the ground with flexing and disengaging the horses hips. The first time I put the saddle on I do those exercises so I still have control over what the horse is doing which would be flexing and disengaging his hind end. Tomorrow I have a 2 unbroke horses I am going to start under saddle and I am going to video tape it and put it on my Members page at mikehugheshorsetraining.vhx.tv . I also have several video's on my members page on starting unbroke horses under saddle with step by step easy to follow methods. The horses I do start under saddle very rarely ever buck with the first saddling or the first ride or ever when we are working with them. Bucking is for the turn out pasture as long as they don't hurt them selves. So anyways subscribe to me members page and when you do join my group page on facebook so you can post your video's with your horse and pictures along with asking questions so I can help you more. My mare likes to kick up her heels when getting a canter, will this technique work with that, or would you suggest something else?
@dr.mikejohnson571
@dr.mikejohnson571 4 года назад
As soon as she kicks firmly tell her "Noooo" and rein her firmly around all the way 180° - go back to where you asked her to canter and do it again. Impress 2 things: 1 - What she's doing isn't acceptable 2 - She's gonna keep doing it til she gets it correct. Keeping her at the same spot as her misbehavior impresses she's doing something wrong right there - assuming you're not in a round pen, although you could still do this in a round pen too.
@jessicaprohm5512
@jessicaprohm5512 4 года назад
Thankyou for your advice. Personally I havent been quite brave enough to canter her myself. My mentor has been working with her on it, not entirely sure what he exactly does. But with this advice I might be able to do it myself 😁 over this past year she's improving, she was out of work for a while so a bit fresh. I had to work myself back up as well since I had a back injury that messed with my confidence. Again thankyou.
@Marcoeful
@Marcoeful 4 года назад
Good Evening, I would use this method as she won't be able to kick her heels up, flex and disengage her hip all at the same time. So if she know how to flex and disengage her hip then the kicking here heels up when go away.

Hi! So, I ride a seventeen-year-old quarter horse named Rudy. The first time I rode him, he started trotting in the middle of nowhere, and my instructor had to stop him. I've been bonding with him, doing ground-work, but haven't ridden him again yet. I might ride him on my next lesson. Do you think he'll listen, now that he's learned to walk at my pace and respects me quite well?
@Marcoeful

How he is going to starting listening to you under saddle is by teaching him certain exercises under saddle to where you have control over what he is doing. Once you have those exercises down then you will be able to ride where ever you want knowing you have control over where your horse goes and at what speed he goes out. if you would like to talk more email me at info@crib-free.com

+Phoebe Lunn Then I would go on to the next steps and get him soft on the bit by flexing, hip control, pre steps to mounting and dismounting, flexing under saddle, and go from there, also they need to be obedient on the lunge line and understand change of direction

Hi it's me again. I looked again at the video and I'm still not convinced. she looked slightly lame on one of her back legs. Have you also checked her feet.
@Marcoeful
@Marcoeful 8 лет назад
Every thing with her has been checked in every way possible by the vets. But after her last lesson over a year ago she has not bucked and with the amount of money the owners spent on her for vet checks I know she was not in pain and we did this before I started taking her out of bucking, I do how ever really like your input :)

If horse is bucking like this mare, it means, "I do not want you on my back". Horses have a right to say this, using thier backs for horse riding is not automatic human right. We have to gain this right and deserve it. I think it would be better to work with her slowly on the ground, step by step for gaining her trust and her acceptance of what you do with her. But it takes much more time and each horse needs diferent time. But the resut is better and permanet. At the end of this work, you are safe on horse back, because horse once has accepted you. This is just my opinion, and my experience.

i have a large male pony called Red, sometimes he is good and sometimes not. When i try to get him to trot he shakes his head and canters into the middle of the arena, i also find it hard to get him to stop, if he is leading the ride and i halt him he will run off in circles and i cannot stop him. He always shakes his head and pulls even though i hold the rains in the correct position, i am a new rider and have only been riding for 8 months SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!
@lilymaya5162
@lilymaya5162 8 лет назад
He also will not stay on the track if i am doing anything but a walk, i have been taught to give and take on the outside rain and be bossy with the inside leg but he still won't stay, he just goes all over place when i try to turn or trot/canter

they are but i had a lot of mares in my rescue cuz no one wanted to put up with them. so what i did when i saw them cranky was to even lower so she has to put up her ears to hear and i touch the neck and give her a nice grooming, they loved it and they were ready. although that wouldn't work when she was in heat since we did have a couple of stallions around. i would grain my horses with calm and happy morning . i must say i love the way Mr. Hughes sits never gets angry and everything he does is like yea, you're gonna do this if it takes all day :) the horses i got were in bad shape and we did everything to get them to trust people again, it took sometimes all year for one stallion.

I loved the video, but i wish i could actually do something about my horse. Lady doesn't do what the horse in the video did. she'll either spin her way out of getting ridden. everytime i try to ride her if she prance she'll buck,if she trots she'll buck, if she's cantering she'll buck while cantering.Its nothing like the horse in the video its more like watching a bull in the rodeo. she spin very fast or she'll just take off by herself and bucks. i love when she trots but i know what lurks if she do. i can feel the buck coming. But this video is very good for others. And to be honest because of my horse behavior i have gotten scared of riding her, fearing that one day i may come out the saddle and never return to it

There is certainly a lot that we can do to help you with your horse, e-mail me at info@crib-free.com and we can go over different exercises that will help you out. We can get the exercises going on the ground first so when you do get under saddle your horse will understand the exercises

hope u can get help. Buckin is always a symptom, and though it may not go entirely away once u fix the cause, at least you'll only get it when the horse gets nervous. First thing is always a full body health check and tack check. My horse who had never bucked in his life started doing so at the canter for no apparent reason and I ended up matching his buckin episodes with mild abcesses on his hind feet showin up on the next trim (he's barefoot). I started booting him on his hinds even though he had no apparent lameness, and he never bucked again. Somethimes it's really simple stupid stuff...

DJBelbe I can't get my horse to canter or trot cause I know she'll buck and she's. Horrible on ground work but I did try working with her and it kinda stop but she's still giving me some aggressive attitude

+Oh no Tyjo So there many different way to solve horse bucking, flexing the horse and moving the hips is the best way, If I get bucked off I don't just get back on, I want to get to the root cause of the problem and fix it, Then when time comes like with that mare I knew I could flex and move her hips to control the bucking

Let me educate you a little bit here, Animal abuse is a federal felony which means if you did whip the shit out of a horse or any other animal you will spend the next 7 years in prison if you caught. Whipping and causing pain is abuse and it teaches the horse nothing. A step by step program in solving the issue is always the best way to go. Today that mare gives riding lessons to children and special needs children. Beyond that how would you like it if someone beat the shit out of you for something they didn't like you doing
@bristol0122
@bristol0122 Год назад
Shes looks very lame in her hind legs. That could explain why she would be bucking. A lot of behavioral problems can come from pain. Make sure you check them over, and they aren't sore.

I will guarantee you there was nothing physical wrong with the horse, the horse was not in pain at all, Today she is a great trail horse for beginners and kids. Along with that I would not train a horse that was in any type of pain or discomfort what so ever. Now lets get to the American part of your statement, that is very uncalled for. My video are on here to help people with there horses and has and always will be in the best interest of the horse :)
