Great video. I love to share these with my husband & my 10 yr old son who’s just joined a new travel baseball team. Keep this great content coming! Thanks!

Excellent video Matt…..I’ve been coaching for 30 yrs, all ages and abilities, and without a doubt ….. this is the number one swing flaw we deal with. On a side note, had a friend Derek Johnson (LHP) signed in 2002? Maybe…..played a few years in the minors. Used to have a lot of Astros swag…..

For those saying teacherman does the opposite of this, I believe he is doing the same thing here but he describes it differently. Richard mentions how important it is to not drop your hands and to keep them close to your shoulder during the swing, as well as not leading with the elbow of your top hand when you supinate. If you do both of these things correctly, it becomes nearly impossible to dump the barrel. With that being said, perhaps Richard should adjust how he teaches this concept if so many people are seeing a difference between these two teaching basically the same idea.

He definitely should. I think he gets lost in his own mechanics sometimes. He believes so greatly in this "tilt" concept that he basically thinks you should be swinging upward 45° or something lol. He misguides himself into saying something in that way, or at least his audience.

@MuffinMcFluffin 10 months ago when I made this comment I was sold on Teacherman, today I'm not. He does teach the right thing with staying on plane instead of a level swing (the best hitters DO swing slightly upward, as does Antonelli's here) but I do think his fixation on aggressive supination causes people to dump the barrel. I went hard on the Teacherman stuff for over a year, and something I consistently noticed was how my barrel would go down too early. I think he just totally has that supination move wrong, I've never been able to create a good swing with it. Also the fact he thinks hip shoulder separation is bad just fully convinced me he is wrong.

Matt, you’ve been on fire this last week or so. In my opinion, these last few hitting instruction/demonstration videos pretty much sum up or encompass the whole swing!

I was a very good hitter in HS/College… but never had any information on how to be better. It was, “Go swing 500 times per day and figure it out”

It’s seems once you get into good hitting position, then it’s all about the transition to palm up palm down position.
@lancastergerard
@lancastergerard Год назад
A ‘progression’ that worked for me was to have the batter stride and load 3-5 times then pause, I’d put a ball on the tee and they finish the swing. Tendency was to drop as soon as the ball,was presented. This mechanic is the 1st step to a ‘bid boy swing’ as 90+% of 12 players will lead with the elbow and dump the barrel

@Brendan_M_ 10 месяцев назад
Great explanation of the problem. I don't find that just pulling back helps me. What I do find is that thinking of starting my swing with my wrists or forearms as the first lever instead of my shoulder or back does (great to watch one of your videos on turning the barrel). I hope that can help someone if they also find they can still lose the barrel from the correct position

How do you feel about Teachermans philosophy of "snapping" the barrel rearward?
@dlandes14
@dlandes14 Год назад
Almost seems like he teaches a barrel dump with the "snap" but I wouldn't say Judge dumps the barrel. Which makes me think he doesn't really do what he teaches lol
@nesssixteen6106
@nesssixteen6106 11 месяцев назад
Honestly I think they're teaching the same thing, even if it may not look like it. Teacherman avoids barrel dumping by telling hitters to supinate with their hands and not their arms (you can stilluse your arms but don't lead with the elbow of your top hand), and to also keep the hands in place during the swing. If you do those two things, you can snap the barrel rearward without barrel dumping. Same idea, just described differently.
@mr.regentsdude5621
@mr.regentsdude5621 5 месяцев назад
Teacherman I think wants the barrel perpendicular to the forearm so technically not dumping the barrel

How do you feel about teacherman? The that preaches the big bat flip backwards. He coaches judge apparently. The idea is like a much exaggerated barrel dropping back
@AntonelliBaseball
@AntonelliBaseball 9 месяцев назад
I don't follow his stuff enough to know exactly. I do believe the barrel needs to turn up into the ball, but there are right and wrong ways to do it.

@@AntonelliBaseballGreat video, Matt. I like how your instruction carries the swing motions through, sequentially. In contrast, an immediate barrel dump, or snap, creates a rotary force that has to be rectified with the forward linear motion of the swing. And if this rotary force (around the forearm) doesn’t allow for the rear hand to go from palm up to palm down, I see problems. I’m not saying “roll the wrists per se’, but in my observation, the greats move from palm up to palm down…..not just rotating around the forearm.

Another note that is off topic, after watching your video on the graded 10 Kershaw card, it prompted me to look for a Matt Antonelli card. I picked up a few autographed cards of yours. I particularly like the cards with the letters of your name cut from a jersey that are signed. I picked up an “A”. Is there a Matt Antonelli card that you particularly like? Do you know which rookie card of yours has the most value?

A cue I use with my hitters is to keep your top hand palm pointed at the ball during your load. The elbow draggers will point the palm up too soon
