**UPDATE** you can replace the plumbers tape with rubber O-rings. Leave them on your rod at the base. Just slip the mono under the O-ring and tie a couple of over hand knots. It will not slip out.
Thank you for this! I had this exact same issue on my trip last week. It drove me nuts! I thought there was something wrong with my setup. It really hampered my enjoyment.
That is a cool idea, I am going to try it as I use very thin line for my Euro outfit and it sticks very easily, even just getting the rod wet in the river for some reason. Thanks for sharing.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thought you might be interested, that I didn't follow your instructions but rather put a heap of nitrile rubber "O" rings along the blank. I had a box of various sizes so was able to do that for most of the blank but for the very tip. Went out in the rain today, worked absolutely fine. Same concept but a slightly different solution with the advantage of rings to hook dropper flies into when moving about.. I am still trying to decide which solution is perhaps the more elegant. But the rings worked perfectly.
Cory, I got all the components for the leader and was able to test it out this past weekend, I really liked it!! Best Iv tried so far. I didn’t get the sitter material yet but plan too, the cortland I use I don’t like too much memory!! The micro system works great it does have a few drawbacks but I need to work around it I guess. So thanks so much!!!! Again I’d love to fish with you for a day and pick ur brain on this euro style!! Thanks
Thanks for demonstrating this. The plumbers tape is genius. Looks like some rain my way tomorrow so I might be putting it to test. Also I got my Sempe material in the mail today. I’m stoked to try it out. Thanks again for the lead on that.
Thanks so much for this great tip. My question is, do you stretch the rubber o ring enough to fit it over the butt of your rod and then slide it into position? Or do you just keep the o rings above the first stripping guide? Do you use two o rings? Thanks a lot!
I slip two rings over from above the stripping guide (you can just stretch it to get it over the guide). I use two just for safekeeping. Slip the line under both and tie a couple of overhand knots. It won't move on you. I talk about it in this video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PIW1Y7c_eT4.htmlsi=fqTfgKg5B00C-T2J
i tell u a way that will be i lil quicker,,i always keep a rubber O ring on my butt section around the rod blank so i hook my dropper fly to prevent it from flopping around and twisting..after u wrap the blank with mono i just slide that o ring to trap the mono under it...never has come loose as long as the o ring fits snuggly and then u totally eliminate the extra time having to put tape on the rod..tite lines..
That surely will work. Although, I haven’t been able to find one able to fit tight enough for my liking....The tape, for me, is pretty quick. Thanks for commenting and tight lines!
Hi Cory; great material, videos and clear information on every one of your videos. Thank you! My question: Does the weight from the wrapped tippet, especially in larger diameters, affect/dampen the action or balance of the euro rod in any real way, esp as we move to lighter finely balanced rods with super sensitive tips? Thx
Thanks so much, David! It doesn’t affect it at all. Don’t go above 1x though (2 or 3x works perfect)-there really is no need. But you will see that the rod feels and acts the same. Hope this helps and appreciate you watching. Tight lines!
Thanks Rich! If I’m fishing a couple of days in a row and rain is expected, I’ll leave it on. But after I know the chance of rain is gone, I will remove it.
Cory, I watched this some time ago but was following up. I fish with a very good angler in PA who does contact nymphing, and he deals with this by putting Rain X on his rod. Ever try that? Stay hooked, Bill
Hey Bill-I haven’t tried Rain X. Sounds really interesting. I do really like wrapping it w mono-it has never failed me, but we can always learn new tricks. Tight lines to you.
@@OldDominionTroutBum I know you use mono. My pal Jay used to do that too, but he switched to Rain X. Just thought I'd share it with you as you may like to try it. If is works it would make a good follow up video. Stay hooked!
Hey Damon, If you are going to two pieces, I would go ahead and wrap at least 3 sections. It will be frustrating if it starts sticking on that 3rd piece.
Hey ODTB, have you ever heard of coating your rod with a hydrophobic coating sort of like what auto detailers use? Drop of water hits the surface and is gone. Just a thought...
Fabulous idea. That'll break the contact and no stick. Somebody want to see line stick to the rod in wet conditions? Try Stren Magnathin in 2 lb. test. It's hair. Lately, 2 lb. is difficult to find but 4 lb is nearly as bad.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Yes, it looks good to me. That's a fabulous idea. Little note to anyone... if you (any reader) come across some Stren Magnathin in 2 lb test, let me know, please. Lately, I haven't been able to find it. I haven't looked for it in quite some time because I had a lot of it but I could use some now again. There seems to be plenty of 4 lb test but the 2 lb may be history... maybe. Good luck fishing, folks.
Hey Corey, I just received George Daniel's book Dynamic Nymphing. I see a young gentleman in many of the pages that looks just like you. He even casts his rod just like you, with his index finger. Is that you Bro? Thanks, Jim
@@OldDominionTroutBum You guys look alike for sure. Some how I picture him as much older. My most recent worry however is that I may not be able to take my new Euro Nymph rod on the plane with me. I don't want to pack it in my bag because I'm afraid someone will steal it. I've had thing taken out of my bag before in Paris and Italy. Any tips on traveling with your fly rod?
@@OldDominionTroutBum Thanks Corey, Mine has a nice case and it a four piece rod, but even at that it may not fit in the overhead. I know some airline folks down the street. I'll ask them. Respectfully, Jim
Corey, excuse my ignorance on RU-vid. Is there a way I can ping you w/ a private message? With cold water in short supply in VA I'm terribly inefficient. I find myself putting in way too many hours on the highway for too few on productive trout water. From your excellent video's it's clear you've found a way to make things work in VA. Would love to compare notes w/ you...
Tip wrap is caused by rushing your cast. You are becoming “disconnected” with your bugs. You have to S-L-O-W down and wait for your backcast to unfold fully before you start your forward cast. Hope this helps.
@@OldDominionTroutBum hmmmm that does make sense I have the most problems with dry dropper on micro leaders when it gets windy. Probably because it is harder to straighten the line
Kuku, I have actually found a better way now. I recommend getting a Rubber O Ring assortment kit (they are made for faucets) You can get them on Amazon for like 8 bucks. You will get a bunch of different sizes. Find the size that fits on the bottom of your rod. I put 2 of them on and they always stay there. I'll just spin the mono down then slip it under both of the O rings, then tie some overhand knots. It will not pull out and is super easy. Hope this helps.
@@OldDominionTroutBum Corey or Cory? Have you figured out which size in that assortment pack on Amazon works? I see it on Amazon. Wondering if there's a way to get even more specific if that makes sense? Thanks for sharing this brother.
Probably will work for the ice, but having the mono is quick and easy for when it is wet. You can just pull out the small spool in your pocket when you need it (It takes no room). Appreciate you watching, Mark.
