My english teacher used to say that not doing your homework is like peeing your pants when it's cold outside. It's nice at first but soon gets pretty uncomfortable.

I feel like a horrible student because I haven’t finished a lot of homework yet and I’m so stressed about it. I have ***NO*** motivation and I am usually really good at school. Ever since online school started, my grades have been dropping, stress levels very high, and no motivation, like I said. I’m struggling a lot so this video helped me get a little motivation to not get behind on all my homework. I really want to prove to my teacher and parents that I am better then they think I am.

0:00 introduction 1:41 task management have a calendar and a to-do list (Todoist, Asana (esp. for teams), Notion, etc.) have a perfect representation of everything you need to do - transfer your syllabus into your organizational system, and continue adding assignments and important reminders as soon as you learn of them. if you don’t have time to update your to-do list, jot tasks down on a “daily note” (a piece of paper or an entry on a note-taking app). update your planner as soon as possible. have a “Review Day” to streamline your planner and remove finished or irrelevant tasks investing time in the upkeep of your task management system will save time in the long run 4:35 chunks and milestones: break work down into pieces with achievable deadlines Parkinson’s law: work expands to fill the time allotted for its completion decrease resistance to start = decrease procrastination first milestone due date should be the same day you got the project: just a little task so you can utilize the information you learned recently 6:40 work every day: frequency is your friend do a bit of schoolwork every day - you’ll probably suffer less if Monday doesn’t always feel like pulling yourself out of the warm, cozy bed that is the weekend . consistency can help you avoid student slumps. consistent progress adds up: systems can be superior to goals for long projects! have study habits: consistent locations and times if possible (plan when you’ll be studying at the beginning of the week, especially if your hectic schedule prevents you from having the same routine each day) 8:56 video summary 9:20 Blinkist sponsorship I’m behind, too. I don't usually fall behind on assignments, but I always end up in a last minute rush to finish things. I just hate that! I always give myself so many other things to do and the more important things get postponed. I guess it's not bad if I still get it done though.

I've been trying the 'break down deadlines into chunks' bit for quite a while but i think there's a fundamental flaw to it: you don't know which chunk of the work will take 60% of your time to complete, whilst you may be treating all chunks the same as if each of them represented 33% of the time to complete the project. For this I believe it is better to apply something akin to what cal newport said about writting papers: write them in 3 days. Translating it to big projects, the idea would be to try and finish it within 3 days during which you'll try to have as much time to spare for this one task at hand, the idea is to do this with anticipation (not 3 days before the deadline) so that if you finish it you are FREED, and if you don't finish it, after this much work, you'll have advanced significantly AND you'll be able to make a much better estimate at how how much time you need to dedicate on it to finish it. : )

Answers to questions! The app I featured a couple of times in this video is called Todoist. Right now it's the to-do list app I recommend for most people. I was a huge fan of Wunderlist for a really long time, but they recently announced that they're going to shut down at some point and be replaced by Microsoft To-Do, which is nice, but currently doesn't have some features I really love (like sub-tasks, which are great for breaking up assignments into chunks). The to-do app I use is Asana. It's awesome and robust, but where it really shines is in enabling teams to work together. So if you're not working on a team, I'd say Todoist fits the bill a little better - adding tasks to it is much quicker since it uses natural language processing. The game at the beginning is called Overcooked, and it's one of the most fun co-op games I've ever played. It's not nearly as fun in single-player mode though, so have friends around if you're going to pick it up. We've been behind on getting full companion articles written on College Info Geek for each video, but I just hired and awesome writer and she's helping me work through the backlog. So sometime soon you'll be able to essentially read each video if you like, and those companion articles will also link to anything I mention :)

I really liked this video. This has been a huge issue for me. I have a lot of difficulty getting myself to study consistently and to break things down. That you mentioned to get rid of some choices - that specifically what I had been working on over the past week. I basically have to schedule in study time in order to actually do it and be accountable for it. My schedule is simple and consistent enough to have a good several hours before classes everyday to study; and I say before cause there is no way I'll do it after classes. I have afternoon classes, and I ride the bus, so by the time I get home, I'm exhausted, hot, and dead-minded. I find I study better in the mornings anyways - no matter how much I hate waking up in the mornings. So I'm working that into my schedule. I've tried to break things down before, but I always put off even small tasks, cause it would make me anxious. I felt like I had too many tasks on my list. So I'm still not certain how I'll handle that, but I do like how you mentioned getting started the day the assignment is given. I feel like that'll will be an enormous help in me dealing with big assignments. I used to just ignore the assignment for a few days lol.
@fionaengelson

This video literally changed my life. After watching it, I broke up the homework I had to do into simple steps every day, and I've been SO PRODUCTIVE. Just last week I procrastinated my homework to the point where I had to finish it during school, but now I'm doing homework that doesn't even need to be done early. The work I set for myself also doesn't have a hard deadline with consequences, which is what I thought was the only thing that could motivate me. Thank you so so much!

Hi, I just started combining Todoist an Google Calendar and I have a couple of questions: 1 In Todoist (or Asana) you set the deadlines for homework assignments and make your own for bigger projects. Those are the due dates. But how do you figure out when you're actually going to do them? Do you change the task date in your task manager or do you manage that with yet another program? 2 HOw do you deal with assignments that are, say, two months away? Do you also plan when you're going to do those, or do you do that when it's actually time to begin working on the project?

One thing that always helps me to stay on track is to frequently reflect. I look back on the things I've done well and try to learn from the successes and the failures I've made. As one great man said, I try to pick up the embers from the past, and not the ashes. Reflecting helps me to remember who I am and look forward to who I can become and maintain a vision. As the great Helen Keller once said, "The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision." Prayer is one big way I try to maintain a vision every day but there are other ways. Great video as always! I've been trying to organize my life more lately and this was very helpful! Thanks! Keep it up! :)

I can certainly agree with Cal Newport. I run a couple of businesses and am also a doctoral student. I had to take my third semester, 16 weeks, off to deal with various business and personal issues. I managed to deal adequately with most of them, and during that time I also took a short writing course, but it was still difficult to get back into the grind. I outlined my entire program and included two more "pauses", but I have decided to revamp the plan so that I only take half a semester off at a time, but also take a few more "pauses". This will keep me from getting too far behind while also giving me more opportunities to resolve business and personal issues before they build up so much that I need the entire semester. This may delay completing my doctorate by a year, but I should produce a better dissertation while also keeping my businesses running. Even during a pause, I'll still be reviewing literature.

I've recently learned a couple of rules that have made a massive difference in staying on top of my things to do: 1. The 2 minute rule. From Getting Things Done, it basically says that if something on your to-do list takes less than 2 minutes to do and there's no obstructions, do it there and then. This may seem at first like you're spending a lot of time doing random things, but as you start clearing down all those little things that have taken up your to-do list, you start feeling a lot less encumbered by all these promises to yourself that you keep breaking. It also means that stuff doesn't get a chance to pile up, and is frequently done at the first opportunity. 2. The 20 second rule. Getting started on something should take about 20 seconds. Like the dedicated study area you mention (which also has psychological benefits for memory and motivation as well), it means you're taking down barriers to doing something even in small chunks. This complements the two-minute rule nicely, because it means you're likely to be frequently moving stuff forward when you're in that area, and it also means you're not dreading even the setup of something.

Love your videos. Also, while preventing slumps and falling behind is great, maybe you could do a video about how to recover from early procrastination in the semester, since its quite common to start motivated and then drift off for a while. Thanks a lot, keep it up!

Hey Thomas, I've been watching your videos since probably about two or three years ago and they still really help me to be a productive person and getting tasks done, whether it's me training for sports or getting work done and earning those awesome A's. I could tell your channel has grown and I really want to thank you and encourage you for what you've done and to tell you to keep going because you have no idea how much of a benefit you're adding into many people's lives, and not just students I bet. I've been using Habitica for a long time now which you've introduced to me and that played a huge role in keeping me organized these years. I'm introducing my friends to it as well. Your videos are only getting better and I find them extremely helpful, probably my number one channel on RU-vid where I actually learn fascinating and amazing advice and earn a benefit from in life. I hope to meet you sometime when I become rich and famous, haha. You're so amazing for doing this. Thanks Thomas

I'm currently falling behind in class- and it feels as if no matter how hard I try, I still can't manage to wake up in a day were in stress and assignments aren't the things I look forward to, my homeworks are pilling up, growing more and more each day, adding to the rest of the other assignment and projects I still need to do. But somehow despite all of that- my body just wants to do something else, distracting myself from all the work needed to be done (focusing on something else) "And whenever I focus on something else, as I worry of school- I simply say- I'll just do this tomorrow, don't worry I'll just do this later..........I literrally have no motivation- even inspiration quotes and videos can't seem to do anything............

0:00 - 0:42 happened to me. Not with homework, but class assignments. One week I was like, "yes, nothing to do!" The next day I went to English class and was assigned to write a 5 page paper. I forgot what the topic was. Next day, I got another assignment from World History. It was a 10 min class presentation consisting of me and my partner. I believe we did Greek vs Roman religion. After that class I had Music Appreciation. We had to write a 5 page paper on a particular musician that we knew rarely anything about. I chose Mozart; brilliant musician and man, I tell you. (I had Economics after English, but I dropped it after I was failing. I didn't like the class, and I didn't care about it either. Plus, I was falling behind on my other classes.) So after I dropped that class, everything became less stressful, and when the semester was over, I had a 3.5 GPA. I got through all of the paper assignments and passed with an "A" on all of them. I got a "C" my part of the presentation because I took too long and kept fumbling over my words. Presentations are NOT my forte! Anyway, moral is this: I waited until the last minute when things got hectic. I now realize that in college there is no "break." I also realized tackling assignments early is best because teachers can review them and see if there are any mistakes. The grading in my school is dumb, specifically when it comes to getting an "A." 90-100 is an "A," which is the highest grade you can get in my school. It's dumb - there should be an "A+," but whatever. I could've done better percentage-wise if I gave my papers in for review.

I used to be studying all the time I stay up, but last study year it did nothing except making me exhausted, and I got more and more scared of work amount and falling behind every day. This year I'll try your advice. Milestone deadlines are good to ensure you finish everything in time. Having these "Sunday afternoons" to set the plan to the current week seems more efficient than thinking each time what I'm going to do right now, like I used to think last year. Thanks.

Thanks RU-vid for recommending this video. I'm in just the situation because earlier in the term I had three essays due within a week of each other, and to mentally avoid doing them I procrastinated until the last moment. As a result I wasted two weekends which I now I have to make up. Thank God for this thing called the Reading Week.

HI man! Great video! Thanks for not stopping with great work :D I have a video suggestion. Can you make a video about how to use your smartphone to make most of it? I know you made a video about productivity apps, but maybe when and how you use your smartphone. In today world we really use it A LOT and I think it is more an distraction than a good thing because of the way we use it. Let's kick ass together!

Dude I'm a freshman in university now and at first I tried doing everything for every class in one day. Which of course was impossible and made me lose track of everything. So instead I sat down, noted down every assignments for every class in a planner and then I devote one day a week for one class. It made it much easier to keep track and now I keep my sanity. It also makes it more enjoyable for me to do the work because I don't get distracted by other classes on a specific day. We have five subjects this semester so it fits perfectly, and for the weekend I do anything extra I feel like doing to stay on top of everything. We also got an assignment to turn in weekly plans of how we've planned to work for the next week, which has helped me come up with this system for myself.
