SUPER helpful! I vacuumed but also inspected my fan. Inside the fan were huge clumps of dust bunnies. Very hard to pullout, but with patience you can remove them without having to unscrew and manually remove the fan. A paper clip bent as a hook, then slightly clipped so it's like a half hook did the trick. I slowly pulled out the clumps. Then vacuumed like instructed. The vacuum will not remove huge dust particles trapped in tight crevasses. Thank you!

Not going to take the risk & open up my laptop, might damaged it. But I will try this vacuum trick of yours ! Hope it works out, Great video :)

Compressed air pushes dust deep inside your laptop, a vacuum pulls it out. By the way there were many people commenting that don't understand how fans work thinking that a fan will break by spinning. As long as your laptop is off, you can try the vacuum trick, or you can try taking it completely apart and cleaning it out. I did both.#pctips

My laptop was over heating yesterday while I was doing my radio show, I took a vacuum to it while it was still on (obv the mic was turned off lol) and it actually did work! ok its overheating right now as I speak but vacuuming it does help, I think what Im fearing it taking it apart and the casing not going back on properly. Id love to get in there get all the crap out. I do however have a heat mat plugged into the USB which helps it a lot but its still running hot.

I got one question for you, what do you mean replacing the video card? is there an actual video card in your laptop? or did you mean to say you replaced your graphics processor unit? video chip. And I believe that a vacuum cleaner will create tons of ESD.

I haven't noticed scratches from the brush. Do what you can to get suction onto the vents of your laptop. Look for the vents that have noticeable signs of dust being collected. Worse case scenario, you will have to take apart your laptop and for a through cleaning. If you choose to take apart your laptop, make sure you take a lot of photos, so that you don't struggle putting it back together.

I have an Dell XPS17 L701X. I've got a fan which is blowing underneath which is cooling the RAM and the HDD and to the motherboard which has the CPU and video card built in. I used to get 90oC on my CPU and GPU but I've manged to keep it at around 80oC now. I've also tried running the laptop jst running the mains without a battery and that works as well.

Yeah my cat is a Russian Blue and he seems to shed like crazy. My desktop computer has to be vacuumed out on a regular basis because of it. I originally took apart the Acer laptop about a year ago and uncovered a ton of dust and fur-balls in the process. Now I give it a vacuum every now and then.

My computer looks almost exactly like yours! I have an Acer Aspire 6930, yours seems to have some better options like the video card and whatever that design is on the left hand side of the computer is? I was told that Acer built the heat sink to close to something in these computers to cause overheating issues!
@Trinivalts
@Trinivalts 8 лет назад
I was amazed how much you can do by just blowing into every vent and then into the side of the fan. (Beware of the dust streaming back into your face). My ASUS K55VM went from 60° on High Perf mode (supposed to be 2.5 Ghz i5, but Speccy says 2.8 to 3.0 on both cores, so I assume it's the norm to be overclocked for this model) down to ~52°C, same mode. Both board and cpu randomly changing temps without one being necessarily higher.

@jokulhaupz3330
@jokulhaupz3330 11 лет назад
do the temperatures stay down? seems like the immediate temperature drop is more likely to be from running air over the parts with the vacuum and having it turned off for a few mins (cpu temp rise probally fom booting it up). Not saying cleaning it wont help, but looking at the temps directly after probally isnt giving you reliable info. maybe leave it on for 20mins,check temp, turn it off, lean it, turn on, wait 20 n check it or something.

once I get a video capture PC built/fixed, I will, it's easy to do as well, all I did was take a dead 478 socket CPU and take the spreader off, open the laptop and take the heatsink off, clean off the old compound and put fresh t.i.m on the CPU, place the heat spreader on, add a dot of the t.i.m and replace the heatsink making sure the screws are even, after that, the heat will distribute more evenly and as the theory worked in my case, will dissipate more heat and cooling it more effectively.
@TheSoxmania
@TheSoxmania 11 лет назад
I fixed my overheating issue by putting a heat spreader from a desktop CPU on my system, from 78*C all the way down to 30*C, and I think the ICDiamond thermal paste I used helped a little :D

Glad your not using pressured air, like someone I knew claimed it worked. Blowing air in makes the laptop flammable! since its moving the dust into the motherboard, but the guy says the airflow will take the dust out of different holes/air vents.... How will that go out the other holes, if there is a lot of dust, it will not fit through the hole. Hoover at least is not blowing air in the laptop. It safer to take the laptop apart and replace thermal paste on the CPU/GPU and then take the fan apart and remove the fan manually, then you know all of it has gone. :)

Careful when you're doing this, you could mess up the fan by spinning the blades too much. It's best to turn off your laptop, hold the fan in place with a finger (so the blades won't move), then use a small vacuum or air compressor to suck/push all the dust out of the laptop.
@semco72057
@semco72057 11 лет назад
Sometimes you have to take it apart if it crashes and make sure the heat sink and fan is clean since that dust going in will build up there. Like you said, it is a pain to take apart, especially the Toshiba which I have. My Dell was easier to take apart and check out.

Okay, so my Toshiba laptop was doing good for the most part, until the warning message showed up saying, "Your cooling system is broken." I ignored it, thinking that it may be overheating. On the next day, I was on at least 5-10 minutes on the computer, and it overheated. I don't feel like unscrewing the whole thing, for I feel that I might break it. I've tried blowing the dust out of the vents, but it still overheats. Putting a fan near it works, but it increases the electricity bill. Any help will do.
@Mike_Jones281
@Mike_Jones281 11 лет назад
It is possible because when you spin the fan, you are generating current that could, depending on the fan and motherboard, short it out. The safe thing to do is to somehow prevent the fan from spinning and then blow it out.

Yes, certainly, it is better to do it while the laptop (or at least the fan) is off. On some laptops (like the C840 I'm using now) you can pretty easily stop the fan from rotating by sticking something in the fan (or simply holding it with your finger) from the other side of it as you vacuum it, so it won't go berserk as you do so. :)

mine runs at 50*C under full load with a 100MHz overclock... 2.1GHz instead of 2.0GHz and a 0.001v overvolt, it hardly even gets near 60, mainly because I replace the heatsinks annually and oil the fan bearings, ik it's not really necessary to replace the heatsink every year, but it seems to perform better having a new one on like that!!
@generic007-28

he's right. the only way the fan spins is by pulling from above. as if you took the laptop apart and then vaccumed the fan that way. from the outside it does not spin in most cases.
