Dirty Deb!! You are the best teacher. I changed the bushings on my skates to yellow suregrips. Wow!! What a difference. Amazing. Everything comes so much easier. Do I got a bit cocky, tried to do something cool I saw on someone's video... I hit so hard... That I'm cold, clammy and nauseous. Thank God for protective gear. I really appreciate your reminders to practice.

In my town we have a roller rink by the high school, and jam skating is really popular. Could you do some videos on easy jam moves?
@Dirtydeborahharry

Depends how you define "jam" skating. If you mean break dancing on your skates … um... I am going to have to tap out. LOL!
@djmensil7303
@djmensil7303 5 лет назад
In the rink here jam skating would be like going around the rink while being able to cross your legs. Like crossing one foot in front of the other without picking them up. That is one of the most popular moves that I can think of.
@Dirtydeborahharry
@Dirtydeborahharry 5 лет назад
@@djmensil7303 ok … the move that you are describing is most commonly known as "shuffle skating" whereas "jam skating" is more like breakdancing on skates. I have noticed that overtime the term "jam" has come to describe almost any kind of dancing on skates. Seriously tho … who cares :) I can help you with the shuffle but jam requires me to have a body not build by carbs so that is a no :) What rink do you skate at?

Beginner here...like this explanation (and other DDH videos!)...my question on this one is: in another video ("Acceidental Transitions") DDH says that in the T-stop *only the outside wheels* of the back leg should be used. Is that right? I'm struggling with this...seems hard to get the outside wheels down when doing a T-stop so any more info / tutorials on this would be appreciated! Keep up the good work!

I have almost the same question. Before I found this video and didn't know what a t stop was, I just shifted my weight to my left foot and dragged my right foot behind me on the very edge of the inside wheels (almost on the side of the inside wheels). None of my wheels of the rear skate were flat on the floor. But it seems like using only your inside wheels is a bad thing to do. I think these videos are great and a huge help, but I'd like to see a close up of the wheels during a stop. To see exactly what's touching the floor. Thanks Deb!

Wow I wished I had a teacher like you when I was learning! I had to teach myself before try outs ...Sac City Rollers ... The first time since 7yrs old , at 26 I got up on skates and looked like a new born baby deer lol I fell within 30 sec right in my tailbone! I never gave up though! I started skating to and from work ...about 1 mile there and back .I figured if I could skate on the street I could def skate on a nice smooth wood floor! Teaching myself on the street was hard but I knew I'd be better for it because of all the different obstacles, textures and surfaces! I would show up to work bloody and banged up lol! When it came time to try out it was easy! I was invited to skate for the team but had to unlearn some bad habits and wished I had been taught properly!!! Unfortunately it, turns out I inherited my dad's weak ankles!!😒 and broke one of them while practicing...well just standing actually. Lol ! One of my ankles just gave out and kissed the floor while I was still standing! Yeah! So it was broke in 3 places and I had to have surgery ...well you know the story I now have a bionic ankle with steel in it but I want able to skate...I was heartbroken but to beat the fear of it happening again I got back on skates lol....I'm 39 now and I still skate but had to quit derby right after I only got to play for about a month! I'm hoping I can go back at some point! The skates are always calling me lol.. Thanks for the videos even if your advanced you can always learn something new! Thanks!❤

Hi Debra, I absolutely love your videos, they rock! I am in Ireland and try to take up roller skating as it is something I always wanted to do since I was a child :) Is there any chance you could make a video on main beginners mistakes and how to avoid a fall if we find ourselves in that specific moment where you more than likely know you are going to fall LOL? Thanks a mill Silvia

Thankfully she was already pretty steady of her feet so...I figured...why not strap some wheels on her feet? LOL I was around the same age as her when I started - only taking time off to have kids - so, for better or worse, both of us are HORRIBLE with balancing on land (I can...and have...tripped over painted lines in parking lots), but we can both skate pretty well. What is a good way to stop if you have speed going?
@Dirtydeborahharry
@Dirtydeborahharry 5 лет назад
Depends on how much speed we are talking about. Skaters can plow stop at speed, t-stop, turn around and use toe stops etc. I will do a video demonstrating high speed stopping!

@Dirtydeborahharry
@Dirtydeborahharry 5 лет назад
You need actual toe stops in order to do certain moves. Toe plugs are used to protect the floor from the metal plate. So learn how to skate with both set-ups for maximum fun :) When skating backward and beginning to stop, put weight on one foot and slide the other skate behind you in a arch … like drawing a backward "C".

DD, how much pressure to put on the back foot? And on which edge? What's the weight distribution once you're in t position? When I do the t-stop the wheels make loud squeaky noise and I'm not stopping fast enough. I'm afraid to press too much thinking I'll flip forward. 🤔 Thank you!

I have an almost new pair of RollerBones Turbo 92A Speed 62mm wheels which are described as Medium Hard Indoors. They feel very grippy so I feel uneasy when I try to T-stop. I just saw your reply on someone else's comment. I feel the grip of the wheels is problematic. What do you think? Thank you Dirty Deb. You're amazing!

I'd love to see some basic shuffle skating moves...but...I guess that needs to be clarified. LOL Where I'm from: Shuffle skating is usually done with 3 or more people in a line, going at a relatively fast pace around the outside of the rink. It's mostly about the footwork than anything. Moving one foot in front of the other, alternating them, a "double count" when going around corners (instead of "just" crossing over, you hold the position for an extra beat), etc. Jam skating here is considered the moves in the center of the rink, often combing roller dance and old school break dancing, floor moves such as headstands and the like. Dance skating is just staying in one spot, for the most part, and moving your feet to the beat (usually done outdoors in large groups). Not sure what they call which where you are.
@Dirtydeborahharry
@Dirtydeborahharry 5 лет назад
That is how I would define each of those categories.
@MystiqueRisingSun
@MystiqueRisingSun 5 лет назад
@@Dirtydeborahharry Yea! We're on the same page, then! LOL I know some places south of me that have never actually seen Jam skating, so they use Shuffle and Jam interchangeably while some points more east of me reverse the two terms. Plus, Illinois, Indiana, and other close areas use the term "JB" (or flat out "Chicago-Style") when referring to shuffle. I'm on a large skating forum and it can get kind of interesting on there at times when no one knows exactly which style people are talking about until they go into a little more detail. Baby steps, though...stick to the basics for the first timers/new skaters for a while...with other ways to stop, backwards skating, backwards crossovers, etc. Then I would love to eventually see some basic shuffle moves. I've got the speed, and I can do a couple of the moves at a slower speed, but my feet just never seem to do what I want them to do once I get that proper speed needed to keep up with the others. OH! I wonder....could it possibly be my trucks? I do have them cranked down pretty tight in the back and only slightly loose in the front.

So hard to wear out outdoors wheels in any manner. The compound is made to take it. You can use your toe stops if you like outdoors. They will wear out but they are made to.
