Rodents have gotten into the engine bays of my Ford f150, GMC Yukon and my Toyota 4 Runner multiple times. They only eat the wires on my 4runner. Its costing me over 8K this time as i have to replace the harness after pulling the engine. Luckily, I have comprehensive insurance but I am about to go on a rodent killing spree.

I have something living in my engine compartment for weeks. Tried peppermint oil, moth balls, brake fluid, nothing is working. Put a sticky pad in there yesterday where it builds it's nests and this morning it was moved, but nothing stuck to it except some next material. I don't know what else to do. Already endured significant hose and wire damage.

I had not heard the tip about trap placement. A rat got into my garage and destroyed the engine wiring harness and the body wiring harness on my Porsche 911. The repair bill was $30,000!!! Fortunately covered by comprehensive insurance. To make matters worse, there is a 6-12 month delay on the body wiring harness, so my car is in pieces at the dealership. Yikes! My advice is to do everything Nancy advises!

Rat's or something is chewing holes in my brake vacuum hoses causing the brakes not to work properly. I plugged three little holes with silicone it worked but the Rat's will probably come back so i am thinking about using Hot Sauce brushing it all over the hoses and wires and seeing if that helps.

Excellent suggestions on trap placements. I have Bounce dryer sheets stuffed & wrapped around every wire and a potent peppermint oil sprayed liberally. My insurance had to replace TWO harnesses within one week. I am determined to trap or keep this little b***d from doing it a third time! I park my car directly under my house lights with the hood now propped open. I will also be adding flashlights.

they ate my dads wires under the hood on his park avenue. i have pepermint oil and a hair sprayer bottle. i wonder if you can spray your engine filter with it and if that would keep them away as well and your cabin air filter spray that too maybe if a fly does fly in and won't leave now that it is getting colder maybe they will decide to go someplace else. Who knows i do spray it around inside my car have not tried it under the hood yet as your are driving in the rain then what happens? it all gets washed off but the engine filter? i don't think that get's washed away so easily.

Very interesting. I had mysterious check engine lights on my Toyota dashboard during the summer, and this week the VSC (vehicle skid control) and TRAC lights came on mysteriously. When I took the vehicle to my Toyota dealer in the summer, they thought the check engine light was caused by the engine missing and wanted to charge me over $2,000 to replace all spark plugs and related items. I never noticed any problem with the engine missing and, for the first time, decided to take the vehicle to an independent servicer for a second opinion. They said that the engine was not missing and that there was no need for the work Toyota recommended. Fast forward: Today I took it back to the independent servicer. This time, they discovered that rodents (presumably the chipmunks I had spotted under my vehicle) had chewed the wiring, causing the mysterious warning lights to come on. I'm off to get peppermint oil and rodent defense spray.

Traps are a double edged choice. The trap kills rodents, but the bait used attracts them in the first place. Once the bait isn't taken, remove them, or you just attract new rodents.
@vineelvin1197

RECOMMEND: 1. HONDA rat tape ($50-$60/roll) installed ($300) over susceptible wires 2. Peppermint oil sprayed on cotton balls inside tea balls attached to various locations under hood 3. Work!ight pointed beneath engine and another light 8ft over and in front of vehicle 4. Clear shrubbery and debris from around parking area 5. Remove nearby bird feeders 6. Remove food and empty food & drink containers from inside vehicle 7. Rubber snakes (relocate occasionally) I don't recommend traps or poison baits as they attract rodents. I haven't tried electronic devices that are supposed to discourage rodents, but reviews are mostly negative

I got peppermint spray, it just adds a tasty spice to my car that rodents love. Every time I spray it on they come running and I find my wires chewed up the next day without fail. So this is not only a myth, it's an attractant. Probably made up to generate business for auto repair shops like this one.

is it safe to spray peppermint oil on plastic and rubber?
@donnydomingo9962
@donnydomingo9962 3 года назад
I've watched numerous videos where they spray that stuff all over the engine, one was a mechanic of 25 years experience, and I read people debating him in the comments, he swears he's been doing it with no harm and says other mechanics do this to. They don't tape off or try to shield any part of the engine. Besides I wonder what the diff in cost is to replace some plastic or rubber parts, compare with all the damage rodents cause?

Try this: I have had a problem with chipmunks and/or mice nesting under the hood of my car. They chewed my wiper fluid hose and it cost me $80 to replace. I used 3 bars of Original Scent Irish Spring in sandwich bags with slits cut in one side to allow the scent out. I cleaned out the existing nesting material under the hood and put the three bars in with the slit sides facing up. It's been over three weeks and no signs of new nesting activity. I also put in glove box and hatchback. Yay. It seems to work. Replace every month or when odor fades. Cheaper than replacing wiring. 👍

I'm going to save you hundreds or thousands of bucks right here and now. Forget all the mousetraps, peppermint and dryer sheets. I have 25 years experience with these vermin. It's very, very simple. Prop your hood open at night with a short 2x4 and a bungee cord. It works. Mice won't build a nest where it doesn't feel safe. A hood propped open 8 or 12 inches is not the same safe place a closed engine compartment is. Try it, it works.
@ccdogpark
@ccdogpark 2 года назад
This advice may be ok for people in rural areas but in cities or suburban neighborhoods, you might as well invite thieves to steal what they want from under your hood.
@joesbarbecue1
@joesbarbecue1 2 года назад
@@ccdogpark Out in the rural areas, we have ways of dealing with the rats you speak of as well. I guess it's a matter of choosing your battles, and then fighting them strategically. Another method, and I suppose you could, maybe, most likely not though use, especially in the city, is the auto parameter urinary method.
