In this video, I will show you 3 tips to stop blocker goals like this from going in.
Let’s break it down.
Number 1
Can you see the puck?
If you find yourself being screened, the first thing you should do is lean your upper body to the left or right to see around the screen.
Now keep in mind if the screen is too far in front of you like it was for me in this situation though, the only way to see around it would be to put yourself out of position which you do not want to do.
Number 2
Do you know where you are standing in your crease?
As a goalie you might have heard the term “depth” before. Basically depth refers to the distance a goalie is positioned from the goal line.
A goalie who plays with a lot of depth is further out from the goal line, usually around the top of the crease, while a goalie who is playing with less depth stands closer to the goal line or net.
In this situation I was playing with a good amount of depth however, because I was screened, it reduced the amount of time I could react to the shot once I actually saw it.
So if you are screened and you can't see around it, I recommend reducing your depth a bit to give yourself more time to react.
Number 3
Are your hands out in front?
Now if you look closely the real reason this puck ultimately went in was because it actually hit my pad bounce up and then hit the back of my block hand and went into the net.
If my hands were out in front, I would have had a better chance to initially stop the puck with my blocker but even if I missed it like I did and the puck hit my pad and bounced up, I wouldn't have actually hit the puck with my hand and put it in my own net.

I try to take a mental note of whether the shooter is a left or right shot. I try to lean towards that side to get a view when possible. I’m also on the tall side so I can see over most guys. I’m usually at the top of the crease too so if I do butterfly I don’t have to reach or open up too much. If there’s a tip I should be ok but if there’s a backdoor guy I’m screwed. That being said do I do this during a game? Not any more lol. Beer league so guys do all kinds of funky stuff. Stick out feet and sticks so it’s anybody’s guess where it’s going. Great tips man!

Good breakdown. I'd add point 4 though. Being square. Just before the shot went off and the screen got in front of you, you could see where the shot was coming from. You were in position for a shot coming from the face-off dot, but the shot was coming from about 10 feet behind that, which means the angle wasn't the same. Slightly off the mark for being fully squared.
