In this video I test two methods of stopping squirrels eating all the bird food. So far they have proved successful. Towards the end of the video I explain where and how I would place the feeders if the squirrels up their game!

Very well done video! I'm in the northeast part of the US and am currently at war with the squirrels. They've figured out how to get past the slinky. I cut the tops and bottoms off of a bunch of 2L soda bottles and slid those over almost the whole pole. It doesn't look pretty but so far it is working for me. They are adorable, devious little creatures. I still throw down a little seed on the ground for them, I just don't want them cleaning out my feeders every day.

I wouldn't mind, but they literally eat everything we put out. I can't afford that. We want more birds because, aside from looking and sounding pretty, they help tremendously in controlling insects. The squirrels push the birds out and eat ALL of the seed.

I use the domes on the feeder poles about three quarters up and it works so far. You can often see the squirrels climbing the poles, goes under the dome and slides right down back Lol! Enjoyed the video! I'm happy to help all my wildlife visitors, birds, hedgehogs, foxes, squirrels, mice etc. Red squirrels were hunted by humans almost to extinction in the 18th century & in the last 150 years had to be introduced to the UK mostly from Scandinavia to try to up their numbers. This was long after grey squirrels were introduced to the UK so they're no more native than the greys if you consider grey squirrels to be non native. At the same time in the 1920's red squirrels were killed here as pests, if you have a read of the facts about squirrels & the UK you can see demonising the greys is a bit faulty to say the least. There's far too much to put here but look for the scientific research articles rather than the anti grey squirrel 'information'.

That’s a nice yard you have. Managing squirrels is like a job. I just feed mine peanuts and it usually satisfies them. It’s too stressful shooing them away. I put most of the seed on the ground for all the animals. You just have to accept your garden becoming a zoo a couple of times a day. I like the slinky. If I ever set my pole up again I will try it. Here in Portsmouth NH we also have a serious problem with gray squirrels. They overpopulate, they get into attics and chew up infrastructure. Even get into utility rooms with serious consequences. Just found your video, whilst looking up anti-squirrel feeders. I recently started putting up feeders in the garden and have a gang of squirrels hogging them. I like the slinky idea. My feeders are hanging on a washing line so that might stop them climbing the pole. They currently do an upside down shuffle along the washing line. My squirrels love fat balls. They've eaten a small fortune of them. That's when I decided it was my turn and I bought a Squirrel Buster. It's only been a couple of days but they're deterred, it seems, by the clattering of the new feeder. One of the smarter squirrels did hand over foot past the squirrel buster to get some seeds from the next feeder. Only problem with the squirrle buster is it's not really designed for suet balls, though I have broken some up. Too big and it blocks the feeder. I do like watching the squirrels. In an ideal world I'd have the reds but getting rid of greys is gonna be next to impossible. May as well enjoy them (sorry, tolerate them). Actually live near Brownsea Island. Been many a time but them reds are hard to see. Video was great; funny and helpful.

Hello Mr T, it is good to see you again. I am very fortunate because I have never seen a grey squirrel in my fatherland! I have heard that they are, in fact, already ante portas, but not in my area for sure. Our red squirrels are rather shy and gentle creatures, I hardly ever see them in winter, they probably hibernate when the temperature drops a lot below zero anyway. They do not cause any problems for me. This morning I saw some interesting birds, namely a wren (I am really glad it has survived the harsh winter) and a goldcrest in my garden as well as two buzzards above my head.
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 года назад
Hello pertelote, you are fortunate to have just your native reds. How nice to see the wren and goldcrest. I see a goldcrest about three times each year - Europe's smallest bird, and what a cutie with it's little, but colourful, crest. Hope you had the real Winter you wanted but I feel it was probably interrupted by unseasonably warm wind blowing from the South. When I was a boy we didn't have buzzards - but lots of kestrels - now buzzards are our most common birds of prey and kestrels are on the decline.

Hi Paul, great video! Just wondering if you think the slinky would also prevent rats....we had them scaling the feeder pole in the autumn 😖
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 года назад
That's a really good question, I would say definitely. I don't have any evidence but I know rats are super cautious and suspicious of everything - I just can't see a rat climbing something (either inside or outside the slinky) which is shaking all over the place. I think a dome or baffle would work as well. Let me know if you test it out.

I was wondering why you had gray squirrels instead of red, thanks for the explanation! Here in the Midwest US we have been inundated with your starlings. I would much rather be awash with hedgehogs or nightingales. Starlings are all just flying seed vacuums. They've cleaned out my month's supply of sunflower seed in a hour before; they come in hordes. I've spent so much money replacing bird feeders that the squirrels ruin with those little teeth. Plastic & wooden feeders are the worst, so I try to stick with metal. They also chew through the wires hanging from the feeders to drop them to the ground. The Droll Yankees yankee dipper & the Brome squirrel buster plus are the most effective squirrel deterrents I've found as of yet. This was an adorable & funny video! The splashy bird bath intermission was a nice touch, thank you from Illinois 😀
@paultsworld
@paultsworld 3 года назад
Sorry about our starlings Allie - would you believe yours are all descended from 100 that were released in Central Park NYC - only 20 years or so after the grey squirrels were released in Britain. If only those Victorians knew what we know now! Bizarrely starlings are much less common in Britain - we don't know why. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video and thank you for your comment.

Hi Paul, I really enjoyed watching this video and I loved your sub titles. Last year I decided to leave my sunflowers in situ thinking the birds would enjoy the seed heads but a pesky squirrel climbed up one of the stalks, chomped around it and managed to separate it from the head. He then ran off with it which was so funny as it was twice his size but he still managed to run along my fence panels and jump on my neighbours' shed roof where he finally got his gnashers into it. The look on his face was as if to say, "I'm not sharing this, it's all mine." Most of my sunflowers lost their heads so I assume he came back for more when I wasn't looking. Best wishes, Wendy.

I live in Florida, and the squirrels have prevented me from feeding the birds. It seems that no matter what I do they find a way around it. I am going to try your suggestions to see if I can enjoy some birdwatching in my own backyard. My backyard has a very large drainage ditch (the HOA calls it a “lake”) that about 20 homes circle around. We have ducks and I do feed them. They eat right away where I can watch. The squirrels respect the ducks space so there is never an issue. Thank you for a most enjoyable video. The commentary had me chuckling. It’s satisfying to get one over on those pesky squirrels. On behalf of North America, I apologize for the invasion of grey squirrels that you've suffered from...... I live on the east coast of the US, and our grey squirrels are masters of ingenuity and persistence. They have loved the suet I put out for birds-in winter - have stolen several suet cages. I guess they decided that instead of trying to eat it through the cross-hatched wire, they would just untie my elaborate fastenings, and carry it off to the woods! In spring or summer, I have sometimes found an empty suet cage under the leaves. I have enjoyed your great videos, with funny captions. Thank you! Going to try the slinky, and some other modifications when I can get to it.
