What solved this issue for me: 1000s of swings with a chair behind me backside/butt touching, never lose contact with chair thru whole swing. Faster method: push chair away with left hip at impact. This definitely keeps you down on the ball. James from Palm Beach
In my early 60s, live in Aurora, CO and just got fitted for new clubs...love them and am re-working my swing to take advantage of them. Your tutorials are great and are helping me. Thank you!
Thank you for the kind words. Great to hear your passion for the game and improving. If you like our content here, you would benefit from our newly launched VLS Golf Academy where we have live sessions and offer new content. See here if you are interested in learning www.vlsgolfacademy.com/
I love the simplicity of the VLS videos and its attentions to us weekend golfers. Not extra words, just great instruction! Can't wait for my driver to arrive while reading "the bad lie". I truly believe my golf game is going to fun again.
From Bozeman, MT. Thanks, Todd, I really needed this video. I'm 71 and have only been playing for 6 years, so I try and improve my game each year. Love seeing the how-to videos. Please keep them coming!
I would really love to see you playing let say a 9 holes and explaining at it goes on, how you manage the game (direction, club selection, how to hit different shots…). I am a fan of your videos an teaching and I think that it would be very helpful for us in the golf course… 👌 From Quebec Canada
I've suffered from this my entire golfing life. This is the first time anyone has explained it this way. I'm going to take this to the driving range and hopefully fix this issue.
Todd Kolb is a fabulous teacher as he makes it so very essay to understand. I am 85 years old and have played golf since I was 8 years old. Thank you Todd for all your help. I am from Nashville, Tn.
Hi Todd, great lesson. Rick Smith taught me about 30 years ago that to stay down and thru the swing, initiate the swing with left hip, swing thru with head cocked right (ear down ) and follow completely thru like you would skip a rock. From the rear view you finish with your upper body tilted right from the hip- - all good players finish this way. On your last swing that’s the way you finished ie., upper body tilted right arms high. Also allows your arms to extend, not chicken wing. This has worked for me for 30 years and I’ve never changed it and had a lot of success (club championships, etc) that way.
Orlando, FL, age 73. Brilliant. I've been having problems with erratic hits, sometimes just thin, sometimes blading or topping. I've watched a LOT of YT videos about topping but never one that addresses the root cause for me. Thanks so much.
Made our day! Thanks for posting. I am excited to announce my first book geared directly for the “experienced” golfer. Here you go www.amazon.com/dp/B0B35T5JMR
Thank you I watched your shows every time I get a chance I'm from North Carolina I play golf a whole lot but I still slice and I made everything but I like to watch your shoes because you are helping me out a whole lot and thank you very much keep up the good work
Hi Todd, G’Day from Australia, your tip re saying “Right then Left “ while swinging has immediately made a huge difference, I’ve gained about 20 yards in one day!! Also hovering the driver seems to work beautifully. Your instructions are clear and simple. Thank. Jim-Melbourne Australia.
Thanks for the kind words! Total team effort on our side. This video will also add some distance to your driver ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HuGq4q9_pSs.htmlsi=BrbK7ccMzCsw1Qlj
Thank you for the simple, to the point explanation! My buddies keep telling my I'm standing up and I've been totally unsure what to try to fix it. For me, the turning my feet slightly out is definitely a cause that I never would have thought of.
Took up golf again now that kids grown and get ready for retirement:) You have helped me so much!! I am a breast cancer survivor and your tips help me rock despite major chest surgery!! Thank you!!
Linda, thank you for the kind words...hope your health is ok. Golf is a great sport we can do for many years, with many people and be outdoors. If you enjoy reading, you may want to check out our book, The Bad Lie. It goes through the entire game step by step www.badliegolfbook.com/
I saw Arnie quite a few times in tournaments in Michigan where I worked as a sports writer/photographer, including several Buick Opens at Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc and the 1972 PGA Championship at Oakland Hills in metro Detroit. Thanks for the driving tips.
Great advice, Todd! Thanks! I'm 70 Y.O. and not flexible. My pro had me swing more vertically and I can rotate better, much better rotation & ball contact and no more shanks, casting, or topped shots!
Greg, it's never too late to start doing/learning yoga exercises. Golf is a sport, believe it or not, LOL. Now we don't have to be pros at it, at our ages, but we can get better, and get in better shape for it. Get loose, walk the course (push cart), and have fun, partner.
In all the golf videos I’ve watched on RU-vid no one has ever described “standing up”. Yes they talked about topping the ball and lifting but not described as “standing up”. This instantly resonated with me and describes my problem. I will start on the fixes you described starting tomorrow. I knew about the feet flare but not the hip hinge. The Jack Nicklaus tip was given to me with the wrong eye, so when I’ve tried that I’ve been locking my head instead of freeing it up. 😂 thank you for a very good video. I am now subscribed and look forward to more. Alan from Bootle, North of Liverpool, Merseyside, UK
Alan, welcome to USGolfTV and the Vertical Line Swing system. Appreciate those kind words. If you enjoyed this, you will find my book The Bad Lie helpful also ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZuShQO2JSxM.html
Eddie from Greenville, SC My buddies kept telling me this the last time out. You’re right I didn’t have a clue about how to fix it. I’m going to try this next time I go hit. Head, hips, toes. Got it! Thanks Todd!
I came back to watch again. Weather is warming up that means head to the golf range.... Bill from O'Fallon Mo. I've stopped looking up so much thanks to you..
As a fellow teacher I find you recommendations insightful. I find with my students who stand up (come up out of the swing) is most often due to poor swing sequence- they start the down swing from the top and results in a very rushed downswing. I would appreciate your insights on this. Great video. Thank you!
Amazing. I actually am really struggling with this due to playing indoors during our last Maine winter after back surgery. I played four terrible rounds in a row since the courses opened, and THIS and putting are killing me. I was pleased to see this as today's video, and am glad I have subscribed. As a senior golfer, with some serious disabilities, I find your tips to be very helpful, and they seem geared more to "regular" players, rather than near scratch golfers. Thanks. BTW.......Your putting tip about slightly hitting down on the ball, with an upward swing, really seemed to help, yesterday. Only one three putt when I had been averaging at least five.
From Bend, Oregon: Todd - thanks - I needed these tips. I hear this all the time. I'm 67 and 6'6" with back issues - so it's very hard to stay down. I'll try these tips tomorrow.
At 3:13 or so, I put my cursor on the top of your head and pushed play before your swing. After your swing, my cursor is almost at your neck, so it's pretty clear to me that you're standing up. In slow motion, your head is at the same spot, almost, during setup as when you make contact with the ball, which is what you're trying to demonstrate, but you're definitely standing up after contact is made with the ball. All that said, thanks for all the great videos.
Solid point, note the head does have some movement and if anything works up and away vs down at impact. The KEY is to not overdo it or do it too early. Thanks for posting.
Ray Lyle 82 years old from South Africa - I was totally convinced that my weight was on my front foot. Then I asked my granddaughter, using her cell phone, to take a few pics of me striking the golf ball. HA all, and I mean all my weight, was on my back foot!!! With the help of the photographer my weight is now on my front foot and everything has improved. Many thanks!!!
Love both the content and your clear/natural teaching attribute. I always believed the standing up came from lifting the head. I'm not saying it CAN'T happen but I believe you are spot on here. My rotation sequence needs work...and that's being complimentary! Thank you Mr. Kolb, from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. I took up golf late in life. Now, at 68 I am addicted!
From Quebec Canada, highly appreciate this simple positioning. Just can’t wait to put this in practice during my first practice session of the year this morning.
I’m 77 years old, play 2X a week, and Marshall/ Host at Sandestin golf courses in Santa Rosa Bch Fl. I’ve been looking for someone, anyone who help me with this problem. When I stay in my swing I can hang with anybody. Been coming out of my swing for almost a decade & no one has ever explained like you just did. Thanks, Joe B in Fl Panhandle
Joe, hope this helps you out. Appreciate you taking the time to post and share your thoughts. Have you seen this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wXlc5dkH5Ls.htmlsi=JcFN6hrdZJ8jbFHa
I swear you must follow me on the course. Today I had an issue standing up. I did use your tip for ball placement by pointing butt of the club at my belt buckle you talked about earlier. Helped a bunch. Now to work on this. Thanks
Peoria, Az. Thanks Todd, your tips and simplicity of the how to make easy adjustments have really helped me. I was a solid 17 handicap, with your tips I have gone to 14. Keep posting these videos they' re great and easy to follow.
Hey Todd, just found your channel today and this great. I’ve been looking into the single plane golf swing but this makes more sense. I’m 73 years young, I am flexible as I have always worked out. Body friendly golf swing is where to at. I’ve played golf for 40 + yrs and looking forward to many more. Thanks for the videos.. any suggestions is welcomed. I’m from Michigan
Robert, welcome to the Vertical Line Swing family. We are here to help our "experienced" golfers enjoy this great game. If you want to learn the full system, see here www.badliegolfbook.com/
Just saw your ‘standing up on swing’. I do that. So thank you for this video. Bob Baker Carthage, Texas ( 125 miles west of Dallas… 200 miles north of Houston)
From Rockville, MD. I am 80, have played for 60 years, have a 16-17 handicap. I wear glasses and find that when I work hard on making a full turn back, which is essential to both generate club speed and to bring the club back on the right plane for solid contact, but which is not so easy for us seniors, the frame and nose bridge of my glasses can get in the way of keeping my eyes on the ball. I recently found that if I turn my head slightly toward the target before starting the backswing, the rotation of my body will bring my eyes more squarely over the ball as I turn and the frames don't get in the way. This may help others who wear glasses. There is a difference between the slight tilt of the head that you recommend and turning the eyes, but you can do both. I also find it helps to focus my gaze an inch or so in front of the ball rather than on the back of the ball. Mostly with the irons rather than the driver. It encourages making that slight re-centering move or shift toward the target just before the end of the backswing that promotes hitting down on the ball and hitting the ball first, avoiding fat hits.
Hey Todd, great lesson mate. My miss is a high block to the right and i feel like this is from standing up. Love the Jack tip tilting the head ill try that for sure. My go to is keep the right elbow tucked to your hip, it tends to keep me in posture for longer. Not super old at 48 but love the practical tips you give. From Brisbane Australia ⛳️🏌♂️🍻
I’ve been playing golf for 3 years and this has been a nagging problem. Will use these techniques to fix my problem. Btw I live in GA at Reynolds-Lake Oconee. Beautiful courses here!
Nicklaus titled the opposite way that you are describing. His chin moved toward his right shoulder and his right ear then moved upward and the left ear downward.
Thank you at age 67,recovering from severe arthritis inflammation in my right hip. Thing was I came out of my posture due to knee injuries. Increased the length of all my wedges 2 inches. Not as challenging to maintain my posture .I like the flair or open feet.Nice explaination of the hip hinge. And setting a head position Thank you,I will try adding these ideas.Seems like recovery will be easier All the best NOW SUBSCRIBED Charles
Good tips, but Nicklaus' head didn't tilt the way you described. He rotated it so his left ear went more toward the ground. That put it in a set position as he took his backswing and thus it had less movement during the backswing, keeping his eyes on the ball better.
Wow great tips..I was playing golf yesterday and this is exactly what I was trying to achieve.. proper hip rotation is key..and flaring the feet and the head tilt are tips I will try on my next round, I’m glad to have found your channel, many thanks! All the best from Ireland🍀
@@USGOLFTVshow The best month for golf in Ireland is…Summer, yes expect rain as part of your visit here,June, July, August are the best golfing months. On the other hand it’s not called the Emerald Isle for nothing! We have an abundance of great golf courses. I hope you get to visit and bring friends and/or family for Craic agus Ceol! All the best 🍀🍀🍀
My first game using this technique has really helped me not to stand up and less topping the ball. Even my iron distance has increased and I am having better contact with the ball.
I have been following you from Kent in the UK. Absolutely brilliant guidance. Effective and easy to follow. Have also joined the Vertical Line Club. Thank you, you are a Ray of sunshine!
Todd your are KILLING ME (Chris, NW, NY) I am using body parts that I have never used before and it is helping me so much. I got your book the other day, I hope there is coupon for a massage or chiropractor in it 😀 Thanks.
Greg, thanks for posting! Our team needs to come to your part of the world. It looks amazing. Not sure if you are interested but our new book is coming out www.badliegolfbook.com/
Trey, those are 3 all time greats you mention! Glad the information is helping our game. If you are interested in learning more, check this out www.badliegolfbook.com/
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks. Did you see my video on 5 best driver tips? You can watch it here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kVYcFBUEQL8.htmlsi=Gc5ZN3NfykvZwXiG
Yes I used the baseball type grip for many many years but in the last 5 years or so I have gone to either overlapping or the grip with a tucked in fingers. Found as I got older that the overlap type seemed to give my wrists more flex. And yes I get a wear spot on my glove but I wear the same one for maybe 20 to 30 rounds.
Great vid. Love the tips on how to fix things. My rotation is poor with the driver so I’ll try these tips and hopefully get better contact without slicing. From New Zealand. 👍
Thanks! Great video. When I stand up, I bring the club in closer to my body and hit the golf ball on the toe of the club. When I am hitting toe shots, I know it is because I am standing up!
Thanks for posting. Great to hear the information is helpful. This is the drill we typically give students who struggle with standing up ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dx-H4ntMcGs.htmlsi=vhtPI_jgHPLTwdHU
Enjoy your videos and have found many of them useful. I'm 77 years old but still fairly flexible. Last year I decided to go to all hybrid clubs with single length shafts. My 6-SW are all 7 iron length. I have Adams 3-5 hybrids that I have not changed shaft length as yet. My main issue seems to be hitting a lot of weak toe shots. Could you do a video on set up and proper swing for those of us that are using hybrid club sets and more so in my case with single length shafts. Thank you for all you are doing to help us more mature golfers.
Tom, appreciate your nice words. We just launched our first book. Super excited to share this information Wylie fellow golfer. Here you go www.amazon.com/dp/B0B35T5JMR
From Huron, South Dakota. Thanks for the tips, Todd. I have problems topping the ball on short cut fairways. It gets so bad at times that I would rather be in the rough than on the fairway. It is too late this season to try these hints (18° today), but I hope I remember this next April.
Bob, welcome! Two ideas, make sure the ball is not too far up in your stance. Second, focus on getting all your weight to your lead foot on the finish. Have you read our latest book, The Bad Lie? It lays out the entire program www.badliegolfbook.com/
