How To Stop The Flea Beetle Cycle In Your Garden. It’s From Your Mulch & Compost! Leaves Have Holes.

Do you have lots of holes in your plant leaves? An example of this could be seen on your radish, lettuce, chard, even tomatoes. This is likely caused by flea beetles. Flea beetles can be a pest that not only affects your seedlings but sometimes your adult plants. Flea beetles will become worse and worse over the years your garden exists. This is because flea beetles overwinter in your mulch. If you compost your mulch and don’t wait for your compost to fully finish it is also overwintering in your compost. This means when we leave mulch in place or we use the unfinished compost on our gardens we are amplifying the issue. One of the best ways to eliminate flea beetles for next year is the ensure that both mulch and compost is removed in the fall. In the mean time we can use a few methods to hopefully get the flea bottle issue under control.

A B O U T M E:
Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are RU-vid, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s RU-vid channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her RU-vid channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

We don't tend to mulch because here it holds in too much moisture. Then we loose plants to rot. It is interesting the number of vegetables that the Flea Beetle likes. A couple of years ago I planted Collards. They were attacked and in the end looked like skeletons. I pulled them and burned them in my wheelbarrow. I didn't know what else to do and that was all I could think of doing. Thanks for this video and your insight into this pest. Take care!

The compost I made between October and May still had leaves and sticks in it, but it also reached 160F+ several times across most of the volume (especially in April/May) so I'm hoping that killed off any eggs/larvae. If ur reaching 160° u need to start turning more. U wanna keep it around 120° and under cuz it killes the microbes at that high of a temp. Try n keep it moist but not wet. I've tried lots of Nematodes, 4 varieties, yes it has helped, but I'm thinking they come from far away, I'm the only garden for blocks, even 2nd year planted had sugarcane borer, and there's no sugarcane fields in this State, Arizona. My combo that seems to work is Nematodes, Praying Mantis, Ambush bugs, and ( dang can't remember the name, a little green beneficial) and I'm hoping that planted cover crop to give homes for beneficial. We have June Beetle, aka figeater beetle, they are advertised as being effective, I caged 7 in a screened box in their preferred enviro. and gave them a very very strong dose, 2 weeks later they all went to the chickens alive. So for me it's the only reason I miss frosts, but that is the fun of gardening.

@@johac7637 You know your beneficials Jo. Lace wings for the green? Aribico Organics has an organic paint I use to keep borers off my 3 fruit trees. Working for me so far for about 3 years since I have been using it. All one can do is to try on the war on bugs. When I had grubs killing the lawn, I put down the nematodes and it worked. Just had to keep the moisture in the ground for 7 days to give them a foot hold so to say. I guess all we can to is try. Floating row covers also work great on cucumbers until they flower, then they come off. By that time they are in someone else's yard. Yes, here in Illinois, I miss the frosts also. I do not miss shoveling snow though. Have a relaxing evening Jo.

@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 yes, lacewings. I'll look into the paint, I set traps in the peach trees, nothing yet, in Canada it was a yearly issue. Here it is about thresholds, what kicking my butt here in AZ is squash bugs, nothing but a daily visit with the shop vac seems to come close. Corn borer are treatable, both Spinosad, BT. As for Nematodes, I treat 10K SQ Ft with enough for 1/2 acre, spring and fall. I'm disappointed in June Beetle control. For them it's a 5 Gal. bucket, 3" water, hang every AM a watermelon ring at top. They need to drop to catch flight, and it to late, one year in a period of 3 weeks I caught of a 5 gallon bucket full.
