yeah dogs “see” the world through smell in the way we see the world through sight. their olfactory system is their most important sense for them when processing their surroundings (and frankly anything else they do lol scent > sight). if we’re being honest, trainers that believe blind dogs are disabled in a way that is similar to the challenges faced by blind humans says more about their proficiency on dogs leading me to believe you dodged a bullet every time a trainer turned down your willingness to pay for their clearly, undeserved expertise on dogs.

One thing that i do if a jumpy dog greets me is i put my hand out in front of their face so it physically stops them from jumping. Or another thing is just to turn around and not pay attention.

That's an interesting topic. There's a couple of dog-training styles. One is more like Cesar's in which not everything is a choice. You should be able to assert a boundary to your dog, not just wave treats and hope someday it chooses the way you want it to. I think many parents would benefit from being more like this with their children. (Instead of free-range parenting.). The other style of training is based upon Skinner's behavioralism, 4-quadrant, more choice based "behaviors that are ignored will extinguish. Behaviors that are reward will occur more frequently." You could read Karen Pryor's book "Don't shoot the dog" to learn more about that. I was involved in this method for over a decade, and it's not as good in practice as it sounds on paper. I think it's a balance between the two. Assertiveness and behaviorism together works well. Not everything's a choice. But, it's good to gain leadership as a choice. But, ultimately dogs aren't humans. Humans have egos. We have an inner narrative we constantly tell ourselves. We live in the past and future which creates "the specious moment" (as an educator called it 100 years ago). Dogs are more in the moment. They can be conditioned to react badly to things in the moment. But, they don't really have the ego we have, and cultivate ego-satisfying stories about themselves the way we do. So, I'd be careful translating too much about dog training into people training. It's a different mind.

That's called cynophobia. Dog Whisperer season 4, episode 25 is about that. The man (Ernesto) in that episode appears in season 8, episode 6 to help a pool-service man who is afraid of dogs (and often encounters them in his work). Episode 6 has two shows, and I believe the other show also involves fear of dogs.

FYI: Dog Whisperer Season 7, episodes 1 through 8 were filmed in Australia. If you haven't them, you might enjoy those.

@@cy4330 it's true. My son doesn't have patience. I feel so bad for that dog because I believe his craziness can be corrected but not the way my son is doing it.

Carry a walking stick (a staff). You see Cesar do that in a many episodes of Dog Whisperer. It lets you project a larger presence, and control more area (reaching out with the staff). Dog Whisperer season 4, episode 25 (aired as 26) is entirely about fear of dogs (cynophobia). Season 8, episode 6 is about it too (the man in episode 25 appears again in 8-6). 2-7 (Sparky) deals with the topic somewhat. These aren't exactly what you're asking about. But, same concept in some ways.

I think it's interesting how all the SPCA, Humane Society, shelters, etc. aren't hammering Craigslist where backyard breeders sell puppies like mad. In 2005, the San Fran. Chronicle did a story about how CL was negatively impacting area shelters. As a result, CL implemented a policy against selling puppies. But, if you look, the policy isn't enforced at all. CL treats flagging as abuse, and lets the policy be violated 99% of the time. I have a theory that these orgs thrive on crisis, need overpopulation for their orgs to be more relevant (to the media, etc.).

Cesar has a 6-volume "Mastering Leadership" DVD series. The 6th volume is "How to raise the perfect puppy." You can find the used/cheap on ebay. If I were you, I would binge watch the original Dog Whisperer series (9 seasons, about 200 episodes). From 3mo to 6mo, this time is more like "kindergarten." You can't expect much. It's more about patience and earning trust and respect through repetition of little things. But, it's still about your energy, leadership. That's stuff you can absorb watching as many episodes as you can (and the first 5 volumes of that dvd set). You wouldn't do the things you see done with adults, but who you are needs to be more that way. As the puppy matures you'll be in a better position to expect more, and assert more.

Hey, you can watch shield k9 on yt. What I've learned is that of course dogs won't listen to you every time... Dogs are just like adolescents boys with lots hormons, say that boy is called by his mother to eat his favourite food, but it's also called by some hot chicks, his friends who have lots of games he likes and etc.... That boy won't come to the mom always. So therefore you must not ask your dog to do something (sit, down, heel etc.) without having something to "force" the dog to do it or correct him for not doing it. In the begining you must show the dog the desired behavior and lure him into it with food/toys. After that you must do the behavior and only reward after, and the last step would be to add distractions and of course correct the dog if he is not listening. So in theory, don't ask your dog to do anything without beeing ready to correct him for not doing what you asked for. Use a leash especially at first.

It's called a slip-lead. You can get them (or make them) with 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2" rope. (maybe 5/8" too for very large dogs). The flimsy part of these is the slider/stopper part which cinches the loop against the neck so it won't open up when the rope is relaxed. That part tends to be too tight or loose. If a dog needs to keep that loop high on the neck, behind the ears, then having that part properly grip the rope helps. If it's too lose, it will open up a little and not stay as high (as long). If you think outside the box, you can find ways to tighten/loosen that part's grip on the rope. The trick to keeping it high on the neck is to pull straight up when the dog starts to cross in front of you. People tend to wait too long, and have a grand reason to pull back, and scold the dog. If you catch it as soon as it starts to happen, then you'll pull straight up, not back. That will help keep it high. When you pull back, it will logically pull down the neck.
