How To STOP Your Dog Pulling On The Leash - EXTREME TRANSFORMATION 

I am a dog walker in Los Angeles. I regularly have to walk dogs that aren't trained well. Today I walked a dog ( one of my regulars) that is an extreme puller. I used your technique today for the first 10 minutes of our walk and the rest of our walk was not perfect but remarkably ( seriously.....a changed dog) smooth in comparison. I am thrilled to have learned this and am so grateful for your trainings!! The owner of the dog was shocked at how calm her pup was when we got back.

The direction changing is such a helpful tip. I was having problems with keeping my dog in heel with just pressure on the lead. I often found myself regressing to letting him lead because I didn't want him to think pressure was part of the walk not a correction. Your videos are so helpful!

I'm a newer K9 handler with the police dept. We just purchased my on dog Sunday. He was had some training, but only as a working dog. We don't start our official school till April, so right now is rapport building. He's a great dog, easy going, but every walk was a bicep workout lol. I watched this video last night and used your techniques. Just in our 30 min walk I could see a change.

I have a huge male black lab who was an extreme puller and he has caused damage to my arm and shoulder and even my hips multiple times! I actually considered giving up at one point and handing him over to someone who would be much better suited for him. I’m a very active person and strength train 5 days/week! Yet I still found myself failing with my black lab! I started watching your videos and began putting your techniques into practice. And I am proud to say, I never surrendered my lab (thankfully because I can’t imagine how I’d have dealt with my own conscience doing so). Today, we walk with a loose leash and even in some environments, leash free! He never pulls; he looks to me for guidance; he automatically heals and sits if I stop; I reward him always because he thrives on the “pay me” system and I’m okay with that 😉 I am a far less anxious dog owner and he is a far less anxious dog now that I provide the guidance to him instead of him frantically searching for answers for both of us! My dogs aren't too bad on leash, but boot camp is forcing us to practice a lot. I got tired of the constant slight pull my young dog kept on the collar, and the 180's weren't working; then I suddenly realized they didn't know how to "yield to pressure", which is something you have to train horses to do. Last night we did a yielding session with treats. This mornings walk was close to perfect. When either dog drifted too far in the wrong direction, two fingers of pressure brought them back into position. I walk in the desert with lots of obstacles; being able to easily indicate left of the rock or right of the cactus eliminates the constant untangling of the leashes. This is loose leash walking, we also practice in heel position.

Brilliant, my 15 week old Cockerpoo now no longer pulls on her lead thanks to this video, even if she has someone walking in front of her. She is constantly engaging with me while we walk along the roadside footpath & that's after 2 short training sessions. I'm gonna check out your other videos now (& I have subscribed 👍)

Appreciate how real you and your content is, I find it frustrating how many poor trainers are on youtube that people think are amazing and have massive followings and they just can't see that what they are doing is to get a reaction from the dog to get views. There are a few good ones though! Love that there is no BS with you!

I am so glad I found this video, just had my Golden pull me while trying to chase a cat. My shoulder hurts like hell & I got in the house feeling like such a failure. Found this, got the slip lead out & we’ll be working on this. She’s a sweet, lovely girl and she’s also very strong minded & excitable while outside on our walks. Thanks for your tips I just picked up a German Shepherd from the shelter. She is one years old and is leash sensitive and pulls on the leash. And I tried your method and after an hour of doing what you did. She walks much better and more relaxed. Thank you for sharing your videos.

My yr old Golden, who was born with cataracts, is reactive and pulls so badly on walks that she leaves my shoulders aching. She is a perfect walker in the morning, but mad in the afternoon. I've just received my Fenrir training lead and the first walk was 70% better. Immediately listening to command more, and less aggressive pulling. I have to perfect the flick of the lead, but thank you so much.

I've watched all sorts of training videos, even Caesar Milan's, but this is the only technique that is working for my puppy. Some other videos showed this type of technique but did not drill home the why, how, or what-to-do-ifs. Thanks so much!

Thanks Will- I use your methods and an easy walk lead and my Golden boy Bandit is now a good walker. For the first three years I despaired. Tried everything and the slip lead and the easy walk really made a huge difference along with direction changes and treats for reinforcement. Thanks for all you do to save dogs !

To teach yield, apply a very small amount of pressure at about 45 degrees to one side. When the dog cocks an ear, or turns their head a fraction of on inch in that direction, release, and praise with a treat. After a few tries mine started moving a foot in the direction of pressure, then a shoulder, then their whole body. We did it right, left, forward, and back.

I recognize you can stop the pulling quite easily, but I would love to see the owner walk the dog after your session, in order to see if the dog has the same respect for him/her as it has for you being a stranger for the dog. My experience is that it is way harder to change the dogs behaviour as a dog owner than it is for a person the dog hasn't met before.

I really would like to see the owners walking this retriever right after and see the progression of the dog over time in order to have confidence in your approche. I urgently need to adopt an approach which will work for my strong, young dog both for pulling and for serious aggression towards other dogs.

This video really helped me, my 9 month old pitbull terrier used to pull really bad, I do this tune up before we walk in the back yard, before walks, and she walks so responsively after only 5 days. Still a bit of trouble with squirrels but being bred for rodent hunting it's to be expected with the breed. Thanks for sharing these videos sir.

It’s all about patients and when it’s your dog build a bond try in distraction free areas, don’t just go to a park and copy this if your dog doesn’t respect you , training is a lifetime thing with dogs, don’t force it and always end on a good note!!!

Thank you for this video. I really appreciate your approach to training and certainly agree with you. I have had the great experience of owning a Border Collie GSD mix. Jezebel was an amazing girl who thrived from this type of training. She always knew I was in charge, through my constant feedback. I used voice, hand and eye input to follow me all of the time. As a herder, she was most comfortable observing the surroundings, always alert to my instructions. I'm now looking for a new dog, as Jezebel died in late May this year. I think treating a dog as a small child goes a long way to forming a loving, trusting relationship

I am very keen to try the exercise with our very strong 18-month old black lab cross NZ Heading dog.

Amazing transformation! I am wondering if this approach would be appropriate for a dog that pulls due to high prey drive (squirrels, bunnies, birds, chipmunks)? She’s always “on the hunt”! You are brilliant man. Ive got a 9 month old black labrador retriever. Hes amazing on recall so o keep him off the lead 8p% of the time. But he pulls a lot on the lead. Ive just bought a slip lead for him so hoping this works. Youre videos are really helpful. And I agree with you: labradir retrievers are the best dogs ever!!

Love your videos, very informative. This is something I put into practice with my 1 year old lab and she responds great. I also have a stubborn 8 month old boxer who doesn't respond that well to this type of training his mind is racing constantly and seems to be on high alert, he pulls and darts all over the place. He's my second boxer, my first I had no issues training. Any suggestions for keeping his attention on me?

my dogs favorite treats(pizza) and my praising gets ignored when we are outside. she wont look at me or focus on me or the treats all. but your video helped me realize I was being impatient and wasn't stopping enough! and need to try to train her in a less distracting environment first

Love your videos Will, I've liked and subscribed. What about allowing them to "stop and smell" (the roses) or other scents since dogs are so heavily driven by this? Shouldn't we allow them to stop and smell things, fire hydrants, trees, etc.? I read (or watched a YT video) that it shows we love them by allowing them to stop and smell.

I am a senior and inherited a Patterdale Terrior who was originally a rescue dog. He is very strong and since we have 2 dogs I understand I will need to train him separately. He also has quite a few accidents in areas where he not usually allowed to go if we forget to close the door to that area. I am getting really frustrated with him he is about 5yrs old. Do you have other dogs you train like this?

Got a black lab only 6months old but growing fast and started to pull really hard so much so that she starts choking and still pulls. Spent the last couple of weeks keep pulling her back to my side. This has no effect at all!!! Must have pulled her back hundreds of times. Tried this method today for first time. Normal collar. Have started to make progress already. The things that worked well was the 180 degree turn for no reason, and was saying “let’s go” to her and gave a firm tug on the lead. When she started pulling again, I just repeated the move. Also don’t go on a walk the dog knows, choose a random route and keep changing direction, otherwise they will think they know where to go and will try to lead the way. Make plenty of random turns. If she is say on the left and you turn left, Walk through her space don’t walk around her. Be very assertive, but not aggressive. Be calm and walk with confidence. If you cross the road, walk at 90 degrees across the road so she doesn’t know which way you are going to turn when you get to the other side. Keep her guessing so she has to look to you for instruction. After 20 mins of this my dog started looking at me more and more which she never has done before. I gave her praise and somethings a treat if she turned with me or paid attention to me. By the end of the walk she sometimes walked on a loose lead, sometimes pulled a bit but nowhere near like she did before. And she wasn’t pulling into grass and bushes to sniff out others dogs scent as much. Not perfect but a few more walks and I think we will be getting there. The biggest positive sign is when they keep glancing up at you. They are then giving up control to you. They will be happier in the long run with you in control. Thanks for this great video!!! 👍👍

Great instruction! We have a 2 year old gorgeous yellow lab that was trained to be a search and recovery dog who charges at squirrels. Only had him 2 months so far and we’re having challenges. I say he’s been institutionalized for the first 2 years of his life and doesn’t know how to behave in a family home yet. Pulls like crazy and is so strong. Please ANY suggestions?!!! Thx 🐾🐾
