This video includes how to dig dahlia tubers, how to check for Leafy Gall and how we store them. Also, how to check your stored tubers for mould and shrivelling.
We dig our dahlias because we have heavy clay soil and usually a substantial rainfall during the winter months. We store our dahlias surrounded by sawdust (wood shavings) in ventilated crates in the garage. In this video I show you in detail how I deal with mouldy tubers during storage and what to look out for.
I hope this has been useful and interesting but do let me know if you have any questions. I will post a video when I take the dahlias out of storage and pot them up so do subscribe to this channel so that you don’t miss the video.
It’s difficult to know how to express myself on social media when there is so much sorrow and devastation in the world we live in, particularly in Ukraine. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine.

That what I have ..a bunch of tubers I never labelled properly haha lucky dip. Can u believe when I moved into my old house 20 years ago i pulled out all the dahlias cos i 'didn't like them' = prob thought they were old fashioned, the lady b4 me had quite a collection too !! And now I am buying them at ridiculous prices and getting my own collection :):)

Lucky dip sounds fun! At least this way, you will have the dahlia varieties that you want and not someone else's choices 😁🌸

I wouldn’t store them in plastic bags as there wouldn’t be any air circulation and they can rot.

Goodness, yes, I agree. I’d never store them in plastic bags. Here in the UK where it’s so damp during the winter months, they need the air circulation. This is why I use the net bags. Plenty of air circulation. Hope this helps.

Very informative. What kind of bags do you use?

Thanks Clare. I use something similar to these :amzn.to/3GNglRZ. I think mine are about 35cm x 25cm. I wouldn't get anything too small or anything with larger holes because the tubers can get stuck or snag on the larger holes (I speak from experience). It's better that the bags are too big, rather than too small. Good luck!

This year a good number of tubers got devoured the tubers. Any suggestions?

Hi Julie, if your tubers were devoured whilst in storage, it was probably mice. I use plastic crates with small holes so that the mice can't get in. I stack the crates and then with the top crate, I cover it so that they are all protected. I also, check them every few weeks for signs of attack!. If you have mice issues, don't use cardboard crates because they are not a sufficient barrier against rodents. If your tubers rotted, they were likely too wet in storage. Does this help?

@@cottoverdi i was talking about when they were outside and i dug them up. I was so surprised to find a good number eaten

@@juliepuhr9806 Ah, that would be slugs and snails then. You can combat the slugs with nematodes (I have a video showing how to do this) but the snails need to be picked off at night unless you're willing to use something else. They're a nightmare! The other scenario could be that the tubers got too wet and rotted in the ground?

i;m hoping not to dig any of mine up this year as i am in mild climate. Gorgeous Kitty cat

That sounds like a plan but try to make sure you mulch them and that they are not in ground that gets waterlogged - water is the real evil for tubers - oh, and 🐌 for the young shoots! Good luck 😁🌸
