In this video, I'm sharing how to prepare your dry beans to go in your Long term food storage pantry.
It's a very simple method, but be sure to keep them in a cool, dry place.
I hope this helps:

"Use them for pea gravel!" Made me laugh out loud! BTW: If beans ever do get that hard, you can blend them to powder and use the powder for soup thickener. Ask me how I know, haha!

Hi Juanita, I am another Juanita by the way, I am 63 and retired and live on social security. These tips are excellent and depending upon space and your ability to do things, there are many frugal ways to put things by. You may be able to ask on FREECYCLE for any gleanings that someone may not want from their garden in exchange for running an errand for them or pet sitting on a weekend when they have plans. It all doesn't take money but investment in your time. I have an elderly uncle in Michigan and his church delivers a basket to the elderly of their church from the gardens of those that can still shovel and hoe :) God Bless

I just opened an 11 year old bucket of pinto beans stored in a Mylar zip sealed bag inside a gamma sealed bucket with a few bay leaves. They are perfect! I do soak them for a few hours before cooking. I got free buckets from a restaurant. It’s important that the buckets be FOOD GRADE, especially if the food is not in Mylar bags. Love your videos!

It's refreshing to see black folks ,or what my parents would say "co!ored folks", doing prepping. Black folks seem to be waking up to prepping, as I see more and more brothers & sisters doing what we have done in New Orleans for years to prepare for hurricanes like Katrina. We prepped but it was not for SHTF but hurricanes. Spread the word, and keep enjoying what you do. I can tell you love what you do by your giggles.

Hello Homestead Heart. Absolutely LOVE your channel. I’m from Pacific Northwest Canada and work in a hospital food services. ( not a cook, a server) . We put our food grade buckets, which we get a lot of, on a rack in the service entrance so people leaving can grab them. Otherwise they go in the compacter, which we don’t like to do. Maybe check with your local hospital that has a kitchen service and see if they have any. Just a thought. Happy days, keep on keeping on, and stay safe, Please. Good job just found your channel for some reason it popped up. I've been doing food canning and preservation for years but always like to see how others do it. Bay leafs are awesome. You can also store dry beans in half gallon canning jars with bay leafs though the 5 gallon buckets are very handy and cheaper than buying a lot of half gallon jars they can be pricey. I Can a lot of my beans for easy use when doing meal preparation. This is the first video I've seen of yours so don't know if you have shown how to can them yet. Even though I'm a house wife there are days when life is busy and it's easy to open a jar or two of beans throw them in the crockpot with fixins to make chili, bean soups, add to vegetable soups they are awesome and help with the food budget too. Blessings look forward to seeing more of your videos. Anna In Ohio.

I love your channel. When we do beans, whatever won't fill up a bucket we put together in a tote and then mix them all together. When we have a good variety we put them in buckets for mixed bean soup. We also toss in a few boxes of Goya ham flavoring in all our bean buckets on top so it's stored right with the beans so we never have to go looking for it, and so we don't have to eat blah beans with no flavor. Thanks for sharing all your great advise.

I’ve got tons of beans that I’ve accumulated over the years. They were left in their original one pound bags and placed in vacuum sealed bags. They look good, but it sounds like I better try cooking some just to see. Worse case scenario, I can resurface my driveway.

Ground cover will be your best friend. Depending on the size of your garden so will drip irrigation. You may also want to fence it in to keep out the deer, rabbits, Etc. Which chips are awesome too if you can get your hands on some.

I love your channel! I've got a tip. When dry beans in storage become so hard they won't cook or can soft, don't throw them away like a lot of people do. Grind them into bean flour! It is soooo good!!! I was raised country, by the way. Have a good one and thank you for everything you are doing.

What can you do with bean flour?
@berthayellowfinch5471
@berthayellowfinch5471 4 года назад
@@Amatullah.574 Lots of recipes are on the internet! Flat bread is one thing we used it for, but we used a lot of flour made from various types of beans and grains. The USA seems to be way behind in the "flours". We Americans are stuck on wheat flour. Other countries use various flours daily. Starch is extracted, for example, from peas and that starch flour is used in recipes, and even the water from certain beans (and grains too) can be used to whip up into homemade "miracle whip" topping and it is absolutely delicious. Even fake "meat" can be made from beans. I put lots of beans in my food storage and kitchen pantry!! By the way, beans will store way longer than meat if you are doing a food storage and the beans are very healthy.

darthdrk okay great thanks a lot... KEEP YAH'S (GOD'S) COMMANDMENTS.... For this is the only way to have eternal life. Matthew 19:16-17 King James Version (KJV) 16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

People have used bay leaves on their pantry shelves for decades to help to keep the pests at bay, as many bugs do not like them. But if bugs cannot get into the buckets, than I don't see any purpose for putting the leaves in. It won't kill any bugs that may already be in there. I think they would keep better in mylar bags with oxygen absorber, then put into the bucket, for long term. Closing them up like that without removing the oxygen, the bugs will still breed in there if there are any eggs in them. Removing the oxygen, and using mylar, any bugs won't be able to live. I had a jar of rice years ago, in which I did not remove the oxygen, and just left it sealed. Bugs hatched and filled the jar with webs and larva because there was enough oxygen in there for them to live. Now it goes into mylar with oxygen absorbers.

Yeah I'm not sure bay leaves kill larva. 8ve been searching videos 9n dry good on buckets with out mylar bags n oxygen absorbers and using bay leaves. Yes heard 3rd world countries using bay leaves keeps bugs away but what does it keep the larva from rehashing. I'm trying to find oyt truth. Cuz I hate to spend money on mylar n oxygen absorbers n not need it. Does anyone know. I hated freezing then putting 8n buckets but who wants to freeze 30 lbs of beans.

If your beans get too hard to soften by boiling due to long term storage, pressure cook them and they will be fine.
