I want to share a tip to stretch vinyl on bulky or hollow pieces. Basically, the real tip is how to keep the shape of the stretched vinyl piece to let us glue it down much easier.
For this demonstration, I have used a 'one way stretch automotive vinyl'. A '4 way stretch vinyl' is much better.
The secret is the application of 'polyurethane glue' on the reverse side. Two coats of glue if the shape is too bulky.
After stretching the piece over the bowl I have applied some heat over the vinyl piece to activate the glue. It dries immediately and the vinyl keeps the given shape.
This method could be applied in some pieces such as consoles, dashboards, etc. which have hollow or bulky areas a little difficult to shape. This way, we save excessive cuts and sewings.
I hope you find this video useful and enjoy it!
Cesar

Brother cechaflo… how do you know when you have stretched leather enough to take the shape of a curved surface..? How can i tell if I’m stretching too much and risk damaging the material..? Love and peace from DUBAI ❤️
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 3 года назад
I have stretched the one way stretch automotive vinyl to almost its maximum stretching. It is only a demonstration on how vinyl could be stretched. Common sense makes us stop when we feel the material is tensioned enough and prone to tearing. Regularly, in car upholstery it is not necessary stretch the material too much. I applied the technique on the hollow center panel of a car console. Just a little bit that helped me to do extra cuts and sewings on this area. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Eb94VA5jhpE.html Leather is more resistant to stretching. Leather is like vinyl, it has a stretchy side too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dhmCJFpOs_0.html To improve the stretching it would be necessary the application of a leather softener: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r1X3sSjfgw4.html If we stretch leather to its maximum, we immediately feel we cannot stretch it anymore...it has a limit. No much probabilites to tearing up with our hand force. The disadvantage with leather is it stretches less than vinyl and if it has embossed grain it it erased off. Heat can be applied on vinyl to improve the stretching. Heat is applied on leather to erase some wrinkles or creases. It does not increase the stretching. It shrinks instead.

Like a full tutorial guide we can buy online, as we are located abroad (DUBAI).. I am happy to make a PayPal payment to you if you can provide one.. Where's a good place to get automotive-grade, thick vinyl like this that will stretch, and will not crack after a few years of sunlight?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo Год назад
Unfortunately, most of the vinyls become brittle and crack after a few years of use. I am in Mexico, but I have found a good link to get automotive vinyls: www.albrightssupply.com/automotive-vinyls

@r0ckworthy Год назад
@@Cechaflo Wow thank you Mr. Cechaflo for that link. I will look at that website. I've noticed that expensive vinyl chairs will have a type of vinyl that is thick, soft, and quite nice to feel, almost as nice as a good upholstery leather. Also, thank you so much for making these incredible videos for us to follow along and add value to our own vehicles and other things. I've learned a lot from your excellent videos and true craftsmanship. You are a real artisan, and generous for putting all of these techniques RU-vid. Hey here's a question for you, if you have a minute: What is the toughest possible leather or vinyl that you would use if you were going to do a commercial vehicle, (semi truck)? What material is the most durable?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo Год назад
The UV sun rays, humidity, and other malignant agents make the vinyls dry with the consequences you know. I think the best vinyl is a 'marine vinyl' which was manufactured to endure daily exposure to sun rays and sea salt. www.albrightssupply.com/products-search?qs=marine+vinyl The toughest leather is the one used for automotive purposes (2 to 3 coats of transparent sealer(lacquer) on top to make it more durable and resistant to UV sun rays. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wPw7SixQb7o.html apexleather.com/fusion/

Before stretching the vinyl piece the pasted coats of polyurethane glue should be thoroughly dry. It dries in 10 minutes, but it could remain from one day to another with no problem. The glue should be activated with the heat once the piece is stretched and shaped,

@@paramdhillon7074 It is matter of taste. A 138 polyester thread size with a 140=22 needle size for french stitches. No problem if no backing in case of dashboards, consoles, etc. For the seats it is advisable the use of a backing cloth on the reverse.
