In this video, I show you how to strip wires without using wire strippers. The process that I use involves pliers. You use the inside blade of the pliers to pierce through the sheathing around the wires, and then use the pliers to pull the sheathing off. Stripping wires without wire strippers is really easy, just follow the steps in this video and you'll be able to do it!

I found this really helpful. I tripped over a wire and broke it and needed to re-join the wires. I don't own a wire-stripper and wanted to try doing it without buying one for this one time I'll ever use it. It helps that I already have a sense of what to do once the wires are stripped - I've joined and capped wires before. You shouldn't try to join wires without researching how to do it properly. So far no fires. I'll write back if that changes!

I'm an Electrician apprentice and I can guarantee to you that is not way you should be doing it. When you nick the wire it ruins the integrity of it, eventually causing it to break and causing a fault in the electrical device.

Ya, he nicked the common and the hot. They will eventual break after changing outlet boxes or too much movement. Plus no a shock hazard at the nicked areas. I have done electrical for years and stopped using wire strippers because of the easiness to score or nick the wires. I always use a razor knife to open the main case. Then use the small area on the back side of the pliers to squeeze the insulation on the wire. This splits the wire insulation casing and the you break off the plastic on both sides. No more accidentally ruining the wire. .

My heart rate went up by about 50 beats per minute watching this. Maybe you could use this method in a serious pinch, but good luck convincing an insurance company to pay out when your house burns down. If you are dealing with line voltage, and you don't have proper wire strippers, I forbid you to ever do this.

Don't ever use your pliers to strip insulation off what will become current carrying conductors...This dude fucked up the insulation of the wires and even scored the wires JUST trying to remove the outter cable jacket....Wire strippers exist for a reason, just use them...Your JW will be thankful you did when the conductor isn't compromised by you putting a score into it

Get some wire cutters, not pliers, split the end of the wire by cutting it where the earth is, grab the earth with the cutters and pull it, it will split the sheathing with no effort, pull until it's long enough then cut off the insulation, no nicks, no risk of cutting through the other cables, this was painful to watch.
@damionsp
@damionsp 2 года назад
Definitely not the way to do it. If you cut the wires flush with the outer insulation to start, you can then peel out to the side either the live or neutral cable until you can get a grip on the earth and pull it down along the middle , the copper from the earth wire will cut the outer insulation down the middle until you get to your desired length. Removing the insulation from the single wires is as simple as giving a tight squeeze with the cutter portion of the pliers and pulling outwards, it does take some practice to do so but you dont need to ring the pliers around the wire 10 times as shown in the video, the cutting portion on the pliers look really blunt.

Do not follow the advice given in this video. I would never strip wire this way, nor would I entertain the idea. For me, a stanley knife is the way to go; a little time consuming, but if you want a tidy cut, then spend time. Wire strippers are probably better, but I find them tricky to use properly without cutting straight through the conductors. Very poor video, sorry.
@brentsido8822
@brentsido8822 6 лет назад
fro0tyl0opy87 agreed with the utility knife score the insulation then twist and pull off no damage to conductors, finished product looks clean and best part change the blade when it gets dull instead of getting meh results with old strippers. My utility handle of choice is the Milwaukee fast back compact for now.

@mikenormandy9250
@mikenormandy9250 2 года назад
This is NOT how you would do this...This is EXACTLY WHAT NOT TO DO (The conductors were scored just removing the ROMEX (NMSC) jacket!!!). Any good Journeyman will tell their apprentice to use wire strippers....If you practice enough, YES you can use your side cutters or dikes to score and strip the jacket but you DO NOT want to score the actual copper conductor (which was done in this video JUST TAKING THE ROMEX jacket OFF)....It is easier to strip sire with your pliers if you are stripping a small amount off the conductor, like 1/4"-3/4"...The more insulation you want to cut off, the more challenging this becomes with your Pliers...JUST USE WIRE STRIPPERS...NO ONE IS ever going to yell at you for doing it the RIGHT WAY....

That being said if you can strip wire with pliers without damage to the conductors have at it, but next time you use that method really look at the copper and see of your nicking it.
