My first book started that way. The first couple of months was writing the tale, the country,, the bad guy the good guy the new good guy the hero the repayment hero the guy became a woman then... You get the picture. All of a sudden the story took on a life of it's own. Got slapped a few times by the character when I had them doing something they would not do. Then the main character grabbed me and told me he was the way he was because. Things fell into positions. I started writing backstories, I wrote notes to why things were happening. My world exploded. Doing what is suggested not only grew my story, but gave me background for others. Other tales had a foundation. So the advice given not only help your present story but build other stories. You never know what your scribbling will developed into to or what your outline will make. You may think you are building one story but you just built the outline for ten stories.

Holy crap - dedicated pantster that I am when it comes to plotting, I’ve almost finished the first draft of my current book - and the story follows these steps almost exactly. Even the bits at the end I haven’t written yet fall into this structure. You’ve definitely got something here!
@susanscott8653
@susanscott8653 2 года назад
You have probably already learnt the structure from books and movies - for example LOTR.
@zephyr4960
@zephyr4960 3 года назад
I structure books by outlining three chapters for every point of the 8 point story arc and then moving stuff around to fix the pacing so it isn't monotonous. Some points on the 8-arc take longer than others, like Quest takes much longer. But that's what I typically do before I outline first draft.

@onenof10

Still good info, as you’ll use structural beats to shape your story after discovering it. Pants your way from beginning to end and then use structure to know what needs trimmed and what may need added. Planners and pantsers, architects and gardeners, outliners and discovery writers. Everybody does the same general things, just in different ways and at different times.
@ericb.171

Yeah but you still need somewhat of a story structure right? I'm a crazy pantser but I still have a semblance of what my structure is. Do you not even do that? Just curious.

@@ericb.171 Yes and no. For example. I have two series that I'm working on and they have a small structure, but even that's subject to change. but my Novel "Elixir of feelings" started by me just 'recording' what my characters did for weeks until I had a whole story

Gratitude for vectoring the discussion in a constructive manner Jenna. There was an interesting counterpoint that might be helpful: in the second season of Elizabeth Gilbert’s Magic Lessons Podcast (Episode 207) she & Neil Gaiman talked about how some fall into 🦦 or 🐬in their creative journey. Where one finds drive in consistently in being inconsistent or loves to live within a consistent (expected) pattern. I am not going to illuminate their point as elequently as they, I only hope people consider where they fall o the Otter Dolphin spectrum as their story craft journey progresses. The story might dictate deviation from the author’s comfort zone or the process of creating might evolve the become unrecognizable to previous finished stories.

Feels like a couple of pals sitting down, chatting utter shite, and I think that is super effective. Your carefree persona is just.. admirable and relatable. I am going to try to put down an idea into text and maybe write a short book, and plotting is always how I wanted to start... So I wanted to brush up because I've been following your channel since I was in high school. Lo and behold: the exact video I needed is right there on the front page. And don't feel old- I wasn't in high school THAT long ago.

Can you do a video about your favorite books you've read? I love your books so I feel like you'd have great recommendations on what to read.

I can see where parts of my story ideas already fit into most of this framework entirely by accident, but there are some mismatches due to how I approach writing. I tend to differentiate between the plot and the story, where plot is the events that occur throughout the narrative, and the story is how the characters interact with the plot and grow and change throughout its progression. My main project breaks from the structure laid out here because the main story ends with still maybe four or five chapters left in the plot, so the resolution happens before the climax, and then there's a second resolution after that.

Well, took me some time to have time to sit down, watch and take notes! Thank you Jenna! This was a wonderfully useful video (as always)! You basically broke down the narrative structure in a way that's really accessible and comprehensive for everyone. You don't have any idea how confusing how story structures have confused me! I have broken down 5 different structures (basically, they're the same, but explained and broken down differently) but there was always confusion regarding the 2nd act. Your explanations are, basically, following every single story structure I've come across, but in a more detailed and easier way to grasp what's really at stake. It's quite easy to do it instinctually if you're an avid reader, I think, but it's great to have a thorough breakdown of the theory.

I'm excited and relieved to see that the plot I've outlined for my story roughly matches the structure. A couple of important things were missing, so thanks for pointing them out! My story is for a videogame though, so I wonder if player losing can be a substitute for the main character's blunders and struggle. X)

I find it very useful to use real life to structure my novel depending on the type of story it is. If it's a revolution or a civil war, then you can use the Seven Stages of Revolution: 1. Reformers Complain 2. Symbolic Action 3. New Constitution 4. Radicals Take Over 5. Use of violence 6. End of Terror 7. Strong Man. If it's a social movements, then you can use the Four Stages of Social Movement: 1. Emergence 2. Coalescence 3. Bureaucratization 4. Decline. If your story includes genocide, then you should reference the Ten Stages of Genocide. My favorite thing about using these as a reference is that it also provides what the opposition can attempt at each stage as well. Look it up for details. I figure use reality as often as possible to have your story feel as real as possible. The Ten Stages of Genocide: 1. Classification 2. Symbolization 3. Discrimination 4. Dehumanization 5. Organization 6. Polarization 7. Preparation 8. Persecution 9. Extermination 10. Denial

Once again, thank you very much for this look into your structure, Jenna. I was run over by a story concept recently (well, it's been there a while, but recent events brought it roaring to the front burner) and I have been wondering how I can gauge if this story is a single, huge book, a trilogy, a longer series, or is it more of a setting for many different stories? There's a lot of meat on these bones and the approach seems to be a unique take that only a few authors have touched on, but it could go many places beyond my MC's arc. Thoughts?

I have had that same problem but then I asked myself how long of a book do I want to write? Too short and it's cringe, too big and people loose interest. Then I ask myself will I answer all of the questions I want to answer in the first book? can I do it without seeming rushed? In all I looked back to my favorite books, single books, trilogies, or longer series and tried to imagine the story I wanted to tell as if they were a single book, a trilogy, or a longer series. believe me this helps give you an idea of what your story could be. If I feel the story needs to be longer but I'm worried I don't have enough to do a trilogy I think in what way can I maximize the story without changing it too much and make it better. On the flip side I don't want to change it too much or add any un necessary viewpoints, plots, and or characters. Its a balancing act. if your worried, write the book as if you are going to do a trilogy but if you find that its better to leave it a single then do so, and if you do a trilogy and think I have more of a story to tell her then at that point think of doing a longer series. Good luck! Edit: Even single books can have more a setting for different stories within the story, or a story outside or close to the story you want to tell, stories of the same universe etc. All stories can do this, take for example, the marvel universe, they started out doing Iron Man all those years ago with no true plan to turn it into this franchise they have now. They focused on showing a good story that was so good they couldn't help but expand it. Hope this helps and I didn't confuse you.

my shortcut at the start is, introducing the characters by using the stories dilemma. i work on something where the threat gets mentioned in the very first sentence via news that my chars watch. ALSO bringing back an ex for artificial drama is actually one of the very worst plots a story can have due to the many times it already got used, due to the many mistakes that can be made and actually are made whenever i read it and due to the fact that that we prolong a story that already has a good ending, unless the love story is a side thing

Okay this has helped me a lot more than I thought. I watched this and tried thinking about my plot points along the way. Whenever I realized something didn’t fit, I tried finding something else that could work for that and how to make it a more interesting part of the story. Anyway I realized my story would end up cutting a bit shorter than this list, but since I’m doing a comic it’s not too important since I can use that as an excuse for a hiatus LOL
