Hello Everyone!
Thank you so much for watching my youtube channel EmpoweRN! My name is Caroline Porter Thomas and I am here to help and serve in whatever way I can. I created this video specifically for Pre-Nursing and Nursing students so that you can anticipate how different and hard nursing questions are going to be on your exams. When I first started nursing school I was anticipating our nursing tests to be similar to the prerequisite test. In these classes all you had to do to pass a exam was to read and study the book. However, when you want to pass your nursing school test, you may as well ask yourself "How to pass the NCLEX," because nursing test are designed to be like the NCLEX.
In my opinion it is a clever idea to have the nurses test mirror the final examination that we would need in order to gain our license. There is only one very big problem with that... how on earth do you study? When I would ask my instructors how nursing testing would be, they would tell me that I would have to go "Above and Beyond." There was no real specific information on how to pass nursing exams.
The nursing test started out with a vengeance and were super hard. As a result of not knowing how to study for nursing exams, I struggled to even pass my junior year. Then I finally "Got it!" I knew exactly what I needed to do to ace every single Nursing Exam! Guys, I want to share with you my secrets to acing nursing exam questions, in this video I give you a brief outline of part one... 6 more videos will be following this one over the next 6 weeks... every Wednesday. Please subscribe to my channel so that you can get immediate updates as to when the next one is posted. Honestly though you really need to read my chapter specific to this. I really want to give this to you. Please click on my website and join my mailing list, leave your email below or email me at Empower.RN@gmail.com. I hope you not only enjoy the video, but that it helps you in your pursuits to becoming a nurse!
With Love,
Caroline Porter Thomas

Found this video while looking for vids on studying for Nursing School exams. For me the issue has never been scheduling study time - for me it has been re-learning how to study. In anatomy, I breezed through because it was memorization. Innervation of muiscles, names of bone processes, etc - all pretty easy. The questions on the nursing school exams are like nothing I have seen. Instead of asking for the definition of a Type 3 Pressure Ulcer they present a question where you have to guess how

Your advice to write down the schedule for the next day is Class A good advice. I was wondering if using Google Calendar would work the same or if it is best to stay with a hardbound volume to write out the schedule in. Thanks from a future RN ☺

(cont) well a patient understand what he should do to prevent it based on four hypothetical things he says in response (and there are always three kind of good out of four answers but you have to pick the best one). I am good at memorizing but don't know how to study for critical thinking. Sort of bombed my last exam even though I felt good the night before with my knowledge because the questions they asked couldn't be answered with definitions. Pretty worrying.

Hi Caroline! I'm an RPN student in Canada, currently in my 4th semester. I wanted to ask if you could please e-mail me the 7 tips on how i can improve my study habits. I was also wondering if you have any tips on reviewing previously studied material, or material that i am struggling with. One thing that I am really struggling with is Pharmacology; remembering the different drug classes and how to recognize them based on the drug name, mechanisms of action, and which assessments or lab values are most significant. I realize that this is an essential and basic part of nursing, and I want to make sure that I am able to grasp all of this material in the coming weeks so that I will be prepared for my consolidation. My clinical instructor has pointed out that I really need to take responsibility here to make sure that I know this material and so that is what I want to do. I have watched the videos you have posted for some of the Drug classes ie. calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors etc. and they have been very helpful, but I was wondering if maybe you have a study tool of some sort with a breakdown of all of the main classes, or if you know of one that you could refer me to. I appreciate any tips that you might have for me! I would also like to thank you for your youtube videos; they are very helpful and easy to understand. I look forward to hearing from you! My e-mail is dylmur21@hotmail.com

fundamentals and theory is the hardest to me for nursing. YOu can read the book and it does not good. Meg surg/peds is a different, at least for me and my group. We read, re-read, underline, read again and shit we are all passing which is first for the first of our program which saw 10 people fail by this time last year.

I got an important question. What are the name of the classes you take in nursing school. Can you tell me which class you took in each semester. You see I have been buying books off the internet on A&P and fundamentals of nursing and pharmacology and trying to teach this stuff to myself or as much as I possibly can. I want to know what were the classes that you covered in nursing school so I know what to buy. Another thing I still do not understand care plans and the nursing process at all.

I'm in nrs school, am a nontrad-older than U-and have a ?. I've been a CNA for 6-1/2 yrs and very much know what goes on on the floor. RNs just run from pt to pt most of the time to get everything done. Restrictions keep getting tighter-incremental hrs, Medicare, falls, etc. No one really seems to like their job. I chose this field because I care 4 people but have wondered why I'm even going into it KNOWING what I'm getting into. There isn't a lot of x to really be a caregive. Your insight? :0)

would you recommend working in nursing school? also if i have a choice to work as a cna at a nursing home or a cashier at food service at a big hosptial, which one would you recommend. Hi Carolyn... I think I have asked before (probably a year ago) but I can't remember. What type of planner, or specific planner, would you suggest? I'm not really doing the best job with my planner but I think I may have one that isn't very comprehensive?? I will start my senior year of BSN program in June and I'm looking for a better planner. To start I think I will be getting a full sized one versus the compact... Thanks so much Danielle
@empowern
@empowern 9 лет назад
Danielle Thomas Hi Danielle! The planner I prefer is definitely on the larger size. But what I look for the most is that it first has the "month at a glance" page. Then it has additional pages with space for each day :) That way you can place short word reminders on the month at a glance section then place more details on the following pages. I hope this helps!! xoxo - Caroline

It was a very quick mention of an "MLA Style" - small book that was really helpful to you. I think it might have been the video where you talk about which NCLEX book to use and you briefly mention the MLA Style book that was so handy to you. So far, I've picked up a few MLA Style guidelines, but it's like they're speaking a foreign language all together. :-(

Hello Caroline. You are an incredible inspiration to new nurses. Your videos are GREAT! Thank you so much for what you do! I am a 50YO LPN male nurse. I have no healthcare experience other than my clinical rotations from nursing school. This is a career change for me, as I am coming from the Casino Gaming Industry in NJ, which is declining rapidly. I am about to start my first job as a nurse. I was hoping that you could provide some info on what is expected as a new nurse as far as charting, and other tips for LTC facilities that may help new nurses in this realm. The facility that I will be working in is using PIXSYS for meds. We will be also using SIGMA for charting. If you are familiar with this program, it would be great if you could post videos for navigating this program efficiently. I want to do the best job that I can do for my patients. I can see that you are disciplined. I will be working in a LTC facility. I realize that you are an RN, and your discipline is beyond my capacity at this point. I so appreciate what you do for NEW nurses. I hope that you will continue to post your knowledge for us. My program at OCVTS in Toms River, NJ was a concentrated 10 month LPN program, which has a >97% NCLEX pass rate. This class was intense. I am indebted to my instructors. I also must credit your videos for helping me CRUSH the NCLEX! Thank you!

LOVE to do multiple charting or electronic record tutorials... I think so many would benefit from that. At this time though, I do not have permission to do so. Hopefully this will change in the near future 😊 I can promise you that as soon as I am granted access, I will make the best video possible for you! Thank you for your comment & for supporting the channel! And please keep in touch as you start this exciting new phase of your life as a new grad 🙌😉☺️✌️😎 Much love, - Caroline
