Like my dad taught me: "First you must learn and practice the basics....". This principle is to be applied to any undertaking, from wrestling to mountain climbing to cooking. Only by learning and mastering the basics can one go beyond into more complex undertakings

Man I love this. Such a huge help, thanks for telling us to improve tempo, if you always practice at 100 bpm you probably won’t be able to do 180+ bpm.

Great video! One thing I haven't seen anyone talk about is open and closed style, starting very slowly and gradually moving to top speed and back down again. I just started this today and it definitely points out a lot of flaws in my playing. I think you demonstrate this often but never go into detail about it. Just a thought! You're the best!

It’s fun to play 1 line with the feet at 16th notes while playing another line simultaneously with the hands at 32nd notes. Excellent for building independence and coordination.

I just watched a video of you at drumeo studios where you talked about being labeled as "other" than a drummer. Was very impressed with your playing on the kit they had there. I have watched numerous drumming vids, but first time seeing you. I'm just a 50 year old, self taught, hobbyist, boot drummer! would love to take lessons from you if you were here in Texas. Thanks

Great lesson. Really like how you have the practice bass pad - and bringing in the practice ride cymbal. I have no doubt that Mr. Stone and Mr. Morello are looking down, smiling.. Also, nice to see Gary Chester's book on the stand behind you.

Thanks for pointing out the "Cut Time" issue. Most videos covering "Stick Control" ignore this and count this as 4/4 time. Why is this issue? Because when a RU-vidr says, "I play these at 150 or 200 bpm," they are actually playing at 75 bpm or 100 bpm respectively. "So What" you might say? Well music theory is important, I think, if it says "Cut Time" it should be counted as cut time with a half not getting 1 beat, a quarter note 1/2 beat and an 8th note 1/4 of a beat. Counting should not be 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & but rather 1 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . . 2 . . .
@dtdrummerlady

Not sure I have this right but is the message that instead of doing 8 notes at say 120 and build up from there you should do 16th notes at 60 and build up from there. I had assumed that as the book is organised around 8th notes I should use 8th notes for the metronome
@dtdrummerlady
@dtdrummerlady 2 года назад
It’s written with cut time noted. Beginners usually start with them played as 8th notes. As you get faster you should set the met at 16ths or just as quarter notes with each note getting 4 16ths.
@rayboreham2648

How the heck do people play at a specific BPM with no reference? She played exactly 180 bpm at 2:27

There was no metronome involved in this video, it was just an example of how to use George Stones Bk.

@@dtdrummerlady I'm sorry Dorothea my post is poorly worded so you may have misunderstood me. I was referring to the way you played the rudiment at precisely 180 BPM with no audible cue and I was just asking how you're able to do that.

Thats great if you’re already fast with hands. It doesn’t help someone starting out to show how fast everyone (who can already play) can play. I was hoping there’d be more basic lessons/help for people in the early stages. 🤷🏻‍♀️
@dtdrummerlady
@dtdrummerlady 2 года назад
I understand what you’re saying. This was just a video for students who have the book but don’t understand fully how important it is to spend hours of practice on these stickings so that it WILL improve your hand speed as a drummer.

@Dorothea Taylor Dtdrummerlady so...after watching your lesson on Drumeo I have learned I indeed can NOT do a paradiddle at 180 lol I did not realize the diddle had to be complete in one metronome click. Good news is I'm officially a lifetime member of drumeo now lol I'll get it one day.

This is wrong - move them around the kit when you reach 180! What?! It will take 1-2 years or even more to take paradiddles to 180.
