Hi Katie, thanks for the video, any advice to someone(not at school) who has a pile of books on one subject, picks one up reads 10 minutes gets distracted and then picks up another book and same process. Years pass and books have still not been read, how do you develop the discipline to read what you need to, without getting distracted. You might have already done a video on this.

Hi! I love this question so much. I think the first step is to give yourself permission to NOT read all the books in your pile. 😊 If they've been there for a while, you might feel guilty looking at them, thinking to yourself "I SHOULD read those. I'm lazy if I don't." But the truth is that you're allowed to change your mind. The person you are today might not be the same person you were when you bought the books. That's totally okay!! Next, let's say that you are determined to get through a book (either because you want to or you have to), I would make sure that your reading environment is set up to support your focus. Our external environments can really impact us, so make sure you're not laying in bed, sitting a chair that's too comfortable, or in an environment with too many distractions. Put the phone away. Put in earplugs... ...And then try setting a timer for just 10 minutes. You said you can read for 10 minutes without getting distracted, so start there. That's a great starting point! Take a break after 10 minutes if needed, or keep going if you're able to. But if you have to stop after 10 mins, don't judge yourself ... it's okay. Take a 5 minute break and start another 10-minute timer. After a week or so, try to set the timer for 11 minutes. Do that for a few days, and then see if you can read for 12 minutes, and so on. You can definitely train your concentration in small increments like this ... you just have to be patient with yourself. I hope this was helpful! Let me know if you have any more questions :))
