If you want to help your baby develop a more consistent night-time sleep, then you have to introduce a daytime nap routine!
So, in this video, Nathalie Kaufmann, Pregnancy & Birth Consultant and TCM Therapist, and Mathias Ritter, Researcher and Science Geek, help you introduce a daytime nap routine for your baby.
First, they explain how many hours of overall sleep a baby normally needs per day, depending on age. And they also explain how many hours of that time are normally allocated to daytime naps. Next, they discuss how many naps a baby needs per day, depending on age and how long the naps are supposed to be. They also discuss the signs which show you that your baby does not need a particular nap anymore.
Next, they share examples of nap routines. And they also explain how to start a daytime nap routine and when to introduce a nap routine.
Finally, they also explain why it is important to make sure that your baby does not nap too long during the day.

Thanks so much for watching! 😊 Have you tried to introduce a nap routine for your baby? If so, at what age and how did it go? What did you find most challenging?

Thanks for this informative video! We’re currently trying to establish one for our 4 month old, need to work on waking him up at the same time everyday (still enjoying sleep ins when we can right now :) ). He doesn’t sleep more than 45mn at a time though, so it’s hard to have a fixed schedule. How can we get him to lengthen his naps? Thank you!

@@susannahaliwell Hi there Susannah 😊, you are MOST WELCOME! And thanks SO MUCH for sharing your story! Yeah, we know the feeling of NOT wanting to wake our son up because we very much enjoyed our sleep! 😊 Can we ask: if you say you need to work on waking your baby up: Does this apply to the naps? And also, how many naps per day does your son have? Looking forward to your reply!

@@CareAboutLittleOnes I would need to wake him up in the mornings at a fixed time, it usually varies depending on how late he went to bed and how the night went. This doesn’t apply to naps as he very rarely naps longer than 45mn, this means he still needs 4 naps a day for the moment. Any suggestions to lengthen his naps? We’ve tried coaxing him back to sleep after his first cycle but we rarely manage to get him to go back to sleep once he’s awake.. thanks :)

@@susannahaliwell Hi there 😊, okay, understood! Thanks for clarifying! There are several factors which might play a role here: 1. If a baby wakes up after one or two sleep cycles and does not continue to sleep, it is often because the baby has not yet learned to fall asleep on his own. This can be the case when you rock your baby to sleep or when you stay in the room until baby has fallen asleep. Because then, the baby wakes up and does not know how to self-settle. Baby will always need you to go back to sleep. So, if this is the problem, then the only way out is to teach the baby to self-settle. Most importantly, by putting baby to bed while still awake (but drowsy) and leaving the room while baby is awake. White noise can also help, or some baby lullaby... We know, it is SOOOOO easy to say these things. And it will definitely not work straight away, but it's a start. 2. If baby wakes up after 20-45 minutes, then it could be that baby is just not tired enough. This problem could disappear once you bring the number of naps down to 3 per day (using consistent time slots). 3. Waking the baby up in the morning at the same time could help solve the problem too (or at least help with it). Trust us, we know how hard this is. We have gone through the same - and we know many parents who go through the same. But it's really the basis for a more consistent nap (and sleep) pattern eventually.... So, this is just some input that might help! Again, we know that DOING this stuff is always a different story than just talking about it. But we really see that these things DO work for lots of parents! We hope they will help you too!! 😊

My baby is 5 months old. She wakes up around 6am sometimes 5am after nappy change. She likes to sleeps between 10am-1pm, Which last between 45mins to 1.5hrs. So When I see she is grumpy I just look at the time and if it falls between those times I know she wants to nap and it works.😊 I am a first time mum, what you described are text book theory 🧐, might have its place in parenting but not for everyone. I believe It’s good to follow babys lead as of when they want to sleep. Remember parents sometimes want baby to be awake to enjoy their presence when on outing or visitors around so the building a sleep routine can get muddled up. And sometimes parents routine can also impacts when baby sleeps. I believe as they grow the pattern gets defined, Parents can then support in extending or shortening the length of sleep… sorry don’t know if am making sense here😂 Thanks for the good work. I enjoy watching your videos as I have grabbed a lot of pregnancy and parenting tips here.❤️🙏🏼

Hi there 😊, many thanks for your detailed input! No, it makes absolute sense what you are saying. Developing a routine also has a lot to do with other circumstances, like, what parents do, as well as the baby herself. So, if you are able to develop a routine for your baby around your own schedule, that's great! This video is based on the input of at least 5 sleep trainers. And we believe it's a great place to start if you don't know how to introduce a routine. But, as you already said, it is certainly not for everyone! That said, we wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby! ❤️

Hi, i watched your video and it is very useful! :) I have a 6 weeks old baby and about to kick off a nap routine. You mentioned we should start the day at the same time in the mornings. Should i wake her up at e.g. 7am even if she would sleep longer so i can be consistent? Thank you!!
@CareAboutLittleOnes
@CareAboutLittleOnes Год назад
Hi there Monika 😊, you are MOST WELCOME! We are very happy to hear that you find our video helpful! 😊 Yes! Unfortunately, the key to introducing a nap routine is to wake baby up so that they get used to the routine. For example: we are currently in touch with parents who complained that their son never falls asleep before 9:30pm. But then we found out that they put him to bed at 1pm in the afternoon for a nap and basically just let him sleep as long as he likes (the boy is almost 2 years old). So oftentimes, he wakes up between 4:30 and 5pm. Unfortunately, that is not gonna work if they want him to go to bed by 7 or 7:30pm in the evening... Therefore, it is important to keep the time frames within which they sleep consistent. That said, please keep in mind that - while it is possible to start at 6 weeks - at that age, it is very difficult to introduce a nap routine (plus at that age, they still need LOTS of sleep). Things are gonna be much easier once they are 10-12 weeks old. But again, it IS possible to start at 6 weeks... In any case, we hope you find this helpful! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

Hi there 😊 thanks SO MUCH for your feedback!! We are very happy to hear that you like our videos! 😊 We are sorry to hear though that your induction was an unpleasant experience! 🙁🙁 That said, there are many different ways of how to medically induce labor. The most common approaches are with prostaglandins or oxytocin, or at least, the synthetic version of it. But sometimes, the medical team may also make use of other means of induction, if the case requires it. Did they explain to you why they used this particular method? Despite the circumstances, we really hope that you are recovering well from your delivery!! ❤️

My pediatrician told me that I should start sleep training my baby now because it’ll be harder when she’s older than 6 months. Is there any studies you know of that show it’s harder after 6 months? It seems like a lot of information out there are people’s opinions and I don’t get the sense that there’s good quality research studies to back it up. Or that people are taking research on sleep in adults and applying it to babies. She’s 5 months old and slept last night from 9 pm to 6 am so is sleep training even necessary? I don’t want to miss my window and make it harder for us in the future but I also really don’t want her to feel abandoned. She sleeps in her bassinet at night. I nurse her to sleep. During the day I’m not able to get her to take naps in her bassinet though. She will nap well on me with my breast in her mouth. I guess my only concern is if she will eventually stop sleeping on her own at night because she sleeps on me during the day.
@CareAboutLittleOnes
@CareAboutLittleOnes 2 года назад
Hi there Sarah 😊, thanks a lot for sharing your case with us! First of all, while there is no scientific research which DIRECTLY came to the conclusion that the best time to sleep train a baby is < 6 months (at least not to our knowledge). However, there IS research about the developments and behaviors (also in relation to sleep) of young babies and how they alter as baby is getting older. For example, research has shown that at 6 months of age, babies start to consolidate their nightly sleeping period. Moreover, it was shown that from 3-4 months onwards, a baby’s circadian rhythm (which is like a hormonal process in the body which regulates the sleep-wake-cycle) starts to take effect. So at that stage, it is much easier to sleep-train baby. So that's that. On top of that, it is good to know that there can be sleep regressions at 7, 8 and 9 months (thus, it is easier to sleep train a baby before that age - although there is also one at 4 months - which is why many people say that the time between 4-6 months is the best time for sleep training). Finally, it is about habit. The older the baby gets, the more habits baby develops. Undoing those habits can be an uphill battle while it is easier to teach them the right habits when it is still easy to do so. Now, regarding your case: honestly, if a 5 months old baby sleeps from 9pm to 6am, we are normally tempted to say: don't touch! 😁 Of course, it always depends on your goals. But isn't the ultimate goal to teach a baby to sleep through the night and to self-settle? If your baby is able to do that at 5 months already, then we can only say: great, job done! 😊 But this is just our personal opinion. That said, when it comes to daytime naps, you COULD try to teach your baby to self-settle in her own bed. But we would not worry too much about her stopping to sleep through the night. Just keep observing her sleeping patterns! We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby! ❤️

@@CareAboutLittleOnes thank you! She doesn’t sleep like that every night, maybe a few nights a week and the rest she wakes at least once. She wakes much more often in the start of the night. We also are using the snoo so we will see how she sleeps once she is too big for it! Have you heard of possums infant sleep program? I’m wanting to try it. By the way, your videos have been so helpful to me. I also really appreciate your smiling faces and easy going attitudes. Your video quality and editing is really good too. Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into making this content and into responding to comments.

@@sarahb6321 Hi there Sarah 😊, first of all, thanks SO MUCH for your kind feedback! We also appreciate that you tell us in detail what you like about our channel - it really helps!! 😘😘 Regarding your daughter: When a baby wakes up regularly in the start of the night (particularly before 10pm), then it is often a sign that she needs an afternoon nap (which, however, should end at least 2 hours before night-time sleep). Also, it is not uncommon for babies that age to wake up at least once per night because their stomach is too small to nourish them during an entire night. So, it's probably just hunger which makes her wake up. This is something which will improve as your baby is getting older. However, in our experience, if hunger is the reason for your baby to wake up (except from the first part of the night), then it is very difficult to get rid of "that problem" with the help of sleep trainings. By the way: we neither know the SNOO, nor the possums sleep program. But we will definitely look into this 😊 Anyways, we hope that this information helps you!! We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

Hi! My baby is almost 5.5 months old. I have yet been unable to create a proper sleep routine due to various factors. Right now she finally goes to sleep around 12:30 AM (after several hours of my attempting to make her sleep) and wakes around noon (other than for nighttime feedings). My assumption is that she's overtired at night. But her daytime naps are only around 45 mins each. How do I fix it and make her nap properly and sleep through the night? Note that she is ebf, but I've started giving her solids once a day.

@CareAboutLittleOnes 8 месяцев назад
Hi there 😘, unfortunately, the only way to change her routine is by getting her used to a new routine. We have talked with sleep consultants about this topic over and over again. There is no "soft" approach to this because your baby is used to a certain routine right now. The first step would be to wake her up in the morning. Then introduce naps throughout the day (like we mention in the video). And then get her used to go to bed much earlier than 12:30. It does not need to be at the same times that we mention in this video. But they are a good starting point... Just keep in mind: this is nothing that will work straight away. It can take several weeks to get her used to a new routine. But you will both benefit from it eventually! We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

@@mathkirukku5235 Okay! Well, that might explain the problem... Okay, in that case, the only thing you can do is to try - consistently - put your baby to sleep WHILE you are still there. So, you would put your baby to bed while baby is still awake. You stay with your baby for a while and then you leave while your baby is still awake. This will NOT work for the first 30-40 times. However, over time, your baby will learn how to fall asleep on his own knowing that you are always there. By the way: we are not talking about letting your baby cry. @CareAboutLittleOnes
@CareAboutLittleOnes 2 года назад
Hi there 😊, it is difficult to give good advice in that case, because your baby is still quite young. However, the only way out is to introduce a good nap routine so that your baby still gets the sleep that your baby needs, just at different times and allocated to several naps, instead of one long one. We also assume that, since she does not sleep until 2am in the morning, she will probably also get up in the morning very late? Is that right? If so, you really only can try one thing: first of all, start the day at the same time every day (for example at 8am), even if this means that you are completely exhausted initially. Then let her have a 90min nap in the morning and another 90min nap right after lunch (in our video, we mention an example so that you know what is a good time to let her have a nap). And then your baby probably also needs an afternoon nap of 30-60 minutes. That way, your baby gets the sleep that she needs during the day, but at different times which enables you to teach her a better sleep cycle. Unfortunately, this means that you have to wake your baby up. 😊 There is just no way around that if you want to change her sleeping pattern (and help YOURSELF with more consistent sleep)... We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby! ❤️

Hi there 😊, the most important thing of all is that your baby DOES gain weight and that seems to be the case in case of your baby. Her weight might not correspond to the "average" weight one would expect, however, don't forget that the "average" weight is calculated by looking at thousands of babies, taking their weights and then calculating the average. This means that some babies will have considerably more weight than the average, and some will have less. But as long as your doctor is not concerned about your baby's weight gain, there is no reason for you to be concerned either. By the way: our son was born with 2100 grams only. And he had even less weight than what your baby has when he was 3 months. And today (at 3 years of age), his weight is just as it is supposed to be ;-) As for her neck, please note that babies are only able to hold their neck from about 3 months onwards. Sometimes earlier, sometimes later. So, this ability WILL develop over the next couple of days/weeks - so don't be worried! 😊 We hope this helps! 😊 We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby! ❤️
