This detailed tutorial will walk you through all the steps towards making your own sun printed t-shirt using a photograph of your choice! You will be taught what supplies to buy, how to turn your photos into film negatives, and the exposure technique that gets you that VIBRANT sun dyed image.
NOTE: Keep in mind this process is TRIAL AND ERROR and what works for me may not work for you right away. I’ve been doing this for years and still have to tinker around with exposure times, dye application, etc…don’t be discouraged by this as it’s part of the creative process! Just try again ❤️

I definitely want to try this, although at the moment one thing I'm unsure about is how well pastel paintings will convert to film negatives. I mainly do monochromatic paintings in green-black, with grey-green highlights. But wanting to try making purple-grey pastels later.

It's a big contact print....At first, wondered what stopped the developing process.... With film, there's developer, stop and fix... That looks like fun! A great way to make custom T-shirts for a small event, as well... How small of an image will it do? Could you use that on, say, a white ( or light color) trucker's type hat?

Absolutely! It will be trickier to get the print to lay out on a hat, but doable 👍🏽 Works with small prints and even oversized prints, just takes some trial and error to get it right. Have fun with it!!

There are lots of different cyanotype dyes you can use for this, not just solar fast! Just look up “cyanotype dye” and a couple different brands should pop up. Have fun making your art 🥰

This is awesome! Thank you for the tutorial, I will definitely try this. I have one question: does it matter which side front or back) of the transparency should be touching the t shirt? Will the dye affect the printed side?

Make sure the printed side faces up! If you touch it onto the dye, it will smear :/ Unless you put some sort of protective barrier on it like shrink wrap or plastic Also, transparencies like these always have a slightly "rougher" side that you can feel. The rough side is the side your image will print on. It's designed like this so when you print, the ink will not slide off Have fun making your shirts!! I'm happy this was helpful for you :)

so if I washed it with solarwash for example. After wearing it, can I wash it in the washing machine with normal clothes and normal detergent?

Yes, after you stop exposure with that first wash it will be fine with other detergent/laundry afterwards 😊

I used orange dye! They make color specific ones, so theres not just the classic blue anymore ☺️

When using the free generator on jacquard do we only have to make the print negative? You said you invert the photo when using photoshop.

When I use photoshop there are two steps: 1) turn it into black and white And then 2) invert that black and white image The generator, however, does both of those steps for you so you don’t have to worry about multiple steps!

Is it really necessary to buy solar fast film, or in environment exist an available analogues? And the basic printer can print on this type of “paper”, I mean you just put in printer this film, choose negative photo and you’ve done?

As I started in the video, there are other options besides solar fast you just have to look :) As for the printer, if you use inkjet then you choose “glossy” You might have to run it through a few times to get the image opaque enough, or you can print onto multiple transfers and just layer them

Hello, I’ve done this but I am really having trouble getting the old ink off of the film. I have to really really scrub for a while with water and a cloth to get anywhere. Is there any type of liquid I should use or maybe hot water. I did leave them quite a while after printing before trying to clean it so that probably didn’t help. Thanks for any advice x

It’s best to wipe them off right away ! I use Lysol wipes. But it’s ok if they are hard to clean, you can always print another one if you have more film :)

You can wash it as normal since I do the process of stopping exposure for you. Typically in cold wash with colors 👍🏽

At the end of the video I explain the wash you need to stop exposure (solar fast detergent) you use this once, right after printing. Then moving forward you can use standard detergent. I use Gain or an organic detergent that’s gentle on clothes, you’ll have to see what works for you. It’s all trial and error and I don’t have a “right” answer do you unfortunately. I only share what I do and hope it works! :)
