make sure your fan is sucking up humidity. A tip I read says to hold up a couple pieces of toilet paper to it when it is running, (with the cover on) and if it does not hold the toilet paper against it when you let go, it's not working even though you hear the sound of it

If you want to take it one step further, take the rotating part off. It's typically held in place just by the center nut. Then you can soak the hole thing in lukewarm water with soap and gently scrub away. And also, I would strongly recommend taking some HVAC-grade aluminum tape and tape the edges of the metal housing over the drywall to seal off that gigantic gap. You'd be surprised how much warm air escapes through such openings into the attic in the winter. Or you'll get a lot of mucky air and critters from the attic into your house. While you're at it, do seal all these gaps around each and every vent you have in your house. Some time and little money well spent!
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 4 года назад
Thank you so much for tips. The next time I clean I will take the rotating part off and clean. I have some of HVAC tape and will get on this as well. Thank you. I will shoot a video at some point about wasted heat and ac! Fill those gaps!
@janie31281
@janie31281 Год назад
What a good suggestion! Is it possible to take out just the rotating part without the squirrel cage itself? My bathroom vent isn't sucking anything up, but I don't wanna mess with taking out the cage because I'm renting and the hardware may be old. I want to clean as much as I can, but avoid even accidental damage.

I clean my fan once a year when checking the fire alarm batteries in the fall. I take my fan out of the ceiling like your video but also take the plastic housing off with four screws and remove the centre bolt to the squirrel cage fan blades. Then I can just wash the blades with a scrub brush in the kitchen sink and the inside of the housing, Dry it and put it back together. Looks like new and good to go for another year in about 40 minutes start to finish.

It's less about how often, and more about as-needed. My home is pretty dusty, so I can tell that the fan is slightly noisier, and there's slightly more fog on the bathroom mirror after a shower. That's my cue. It's about once every maybe 2 years.

I have an always on bathroom fan that is integral to the home's ventilation system. I clean it about every six months. The thing is I don't need a calendar reminder as I can hear when it needs cleaning. After a cleaning I can barely hear it running. It gets progressively louder as it gets dirty. When I can hear it from fifteen feet, it's time.

I feel like our fan just dumps dust in our bathroom because it's vented to the outside. Wondering if you know if we can put a filter in these to keep them from dropping particles in the bathroom. Or does that cause the engine to have to work too hard? I clean it regularly but this happens every week. I'm so tired of having to dust the bathroom so dang often. It doesn't happen anywhere else in the house. Thank you so much!
@ThatFixItGuy
@ThatFixItGuy 3 года назад
You could stick some filter material up in there I bet. That is so weird that is happening to you. A filter will slow down the air flowna little, but i bet it will help. Twice a year, spring & fall cleaning
@witchhunt5781
@witchhunt5781 Год назад
I am woman🤣🤣🤣 and own a duplex. Thankfully my son and his friends live in the second unit. My daughter and I live in the first unit. I never had money for maintenance when I had tenants because they caused more repairs than a typical family would need. I know. I lived in my unit ten years before having it needed painting plus other things they did like fist in the wall/door/window oh my. But I think cleaning items like this especially in an older house like mine would be a yearly thing or two. Depending how many people using the bathroom. We have two people in each unit us a stray here and there that needs a home. Thanks.

Does a bathroom vent require a vent filter?

The bathroom filter is really to remove moisture and smell out of the bathroom. If you add a filter is could slow down air flow faster. You will want to change or clean that filter pretty often to keep that flowing good. If you are getting dust coming into your house front when vent you will want to look at how the vent is ran out the house.

We live in a rental apt. Would this job be under the maintenance mans list of maintenance? We’ve been here almost two years and I’ve notice our bathrooms vents are super dusty and do not work properly due to not being cleaned. I’ve cleaned the dishwasher and oven as we should but I feel like this job is up to maintenance/management

I would think so. I would certainly ask. They would want to make sure it stays in working order or they will have to replace it.

@ThatFixItGuy

It would not hurt to clean it and see. If it is really dirty it could be putting heavy strain on the motor, but sounds like the motor bearings may need a couple drops of oil.

It was the most difficult thing to pick the clips back. Mine, I had to thread the wire into a slot. There was no room for hands/fingers. Who ever designed that method was an idiot. Make sure if you replace the cover you can take it on and off easy before you buy it!

I think the girl on Clean My Space video showed a better demonstration of cleaning and removing the vent. Showing squeezing the two metal rods together. Plus she skipped all the vacuuming and just used a brush with vinegar soap water. All the way around her demo was easier and less steps. I think you should learn from her!
