Today the PAC team discusses retained abilities and care for a person in an Amber State. When we observe and use a person’s currently abilities, we can support them in their own care tasks instead of doing it for them. Remember, if you don’t use it, you lose it. When you are supporting a person living with dementia, let them do as much as they can and substitute your skill only when needed. This allows them to both feel self-sufficient and maintain currently abilities long.

I instinctively squatted down to talk to my friend’s Mom, who appears to be in an Amber state often, out of respect for her and in an attempt to show that I am in a subservient position to her. I am here to serve her. I have frequently told her, “You’re the boss”. I ask her to help me help her stand, and she does her best to push her self up, with my support and gentle guidance. Together we get her up. She cooperates with me. I encourage her during the process of standing by saying, “Good job! You’re doing great!” And I always thank her for helping me and smile at her, looking her in the eye, and she usually smiles back.

Hi, @oldenoughtoknow...7558 you are so right that care partners need support too. Please check out this whole section of our website (teepasnow.com/resources/for-families-and-friends/) for them. You may also want to reach out for a free 30-minute consult (consult@teepasnow.com) to talk with someone about resources.

I love Alejandro’s observation of the way Teepa’s positioning is supportive and nonthreatening. 💖

Ooh, so important to point out how Teepa knows when to talk and when to stay silent! And I love how encouraging Teepa’s language is.

And how Teepa doesn’t rush to touch cue but does use touch cues. This is such a good example of helping someone in Amber state who needs support with even the smallest transitions but also can still do things. 😍 The way Alice’s face lit up with the hug that she gave consent for, blessed my soul! 🥹

Good video with very useful information. I have a spouse with Alzheimer’s dementia who I believe is in an amber state. He is currently in a long-term care facility however, the major challenges the staff are dealing with is in his care when changing and cleaning him up in the bathroom , oftentimes requiring three health care support staff. On occasion he has become rather agitated and aggressive. Do you have any tips or suggestions on how they can make this experience less challenging and perhaps to the point where it would only require maybe two or one staff member rather than three currently. Most of the health care staff are terrified of him.

Hi, @mswhite1532, I'm sorry to hear that your husband is having issues around bathroom care. I'd like to suggest that staff might be interested in these videos here on RU-vid (www.youtube.com/@teepasnowvideos/search?query=bathroom) or they may want to check out this one (shop.teepasnow.com/product/bathing-issues-professionals/). If they continue to have issues, maybe suggest that you and they meet with one of our consultants to discuss ideas (consult@teepasnow.com)

Would this work with some tasks like laundry or cleaning the sink?
@teepasnowvideos
@teepasnowvideos 6 месяцев назад
Great suggestions, @63emeralds74! It might work if the person enjoys the sensations associated with the activity, for example foldings laundry that is warm from the dryer or sorting clothes. Also if it's an activity that the person enjoyed doing in the past, they may still enjoy it. If you'd like to discuss more ideas, please reach out to our consulting team at consult@teepasnow.com or 1-877-877-1671 for a 30 minute free consultation.
