Great water angle. I found as a bigger guy, a fish was ideal to progress down from mal shapes. Great to get the feel of a shorter board, but still have wave catching and stability. As you said, not as easy to do rios, but such a fun template. Quad setup is great for down the line speed on a fish.
@surfcoaches
@surfcoaches 5 лет назад
Yep, i will be switching to the quad for the next session on this board. Hard to image it being faster then it already is
@marmalpa
@marmalpa 5 лет назад
You are totally correct on all points BGBSR . Quad set up usually does work better on most really wide tails like a fish , fast and seems to have more control at high speeds .

Great advice. Learning to ride a fish is definitely a different feeling. After watching your stance, I think I need to narrow up a little more. I love the fish because you have to to ride the natural shape of the wave as opposed to forcing your will. In a way, it’s almost like giving up the ego. Thanks for the video!
@marmalpa
@marmalpa 5 лет назад
What’s actually nice about these type of fishes that tend to be wider is that you can move your stance up and down the board , you don’t want to necessarily be stuck standing in one spot all the time . You can move up on slower sections and pump for speed , then once you have the speed move the stance back and turn at a tighter radius . It takes some practice but once you tap into that your fish surfing will improve a lot .

I had to sell my surfboards, but I couldn't part with my twinny + 1 fish! You can get some real nice high performance eggs these days. My surfboards were 6'6'' x 20 x 2 5/8 JS tractor board square tail and I also had a 6'4'' x 20 x 2 3/4 Adams Thumb tail shaped for me. I was kind of forced to sell both of them unfortunately. I loved my Adams x I used to love surfing thumb tail fish boards. Most days I'm on a body board with swim fins due to ease of transport and getting fuller body workout, but days when I can get boards to beach I'll surf the fish for the first half of the session. The best board I ever surfed was my Adams. Thickness in the areas under your feet and width of board feel like important aspects of a board with good dimensions for bigger people, and a somewhat a thinner/ narrower nose can making it easier to duck dive I find. Anyway you can feel what works for each individual thought provoking video. Nice 👍

I feel like volume is SO counterintuitive. I has to be. I'm 38 yrs old, 5'8, around 190/195 pounds, and a beginner. I bought a 60L 8' fun board and I suck on it. However, I'm staying in and catching white water. I ended up buying a 8' foamie just last week at around 85 or so liters, and it's so much more fun for my skill level and what I want to do at the moment which is just getting on the board and cruising without sinking. Once I progress and learn how to ride the face of a wave and turn, I might go back to the 60L fun board, but I don't really see much benefit of keeping it now that I have my 8' foamie and when I can get a $350 - 6.5 ft foamie fish that's 60L as well. I think the thing that I'm struggling with my snowboarder and skateboarder background is foot placement. I am speculating as I haven't surfed anything less than 8', but I feel like short boards allow you to push the board underneath you to your feet easier, and given that there's less board surface, then you have a somewhat fixed foot placement and you get on and ride it basically in that one position more or less. Long boards I'm struggling with... it's just I'm walking all over it. I try the back, the middle, the front, etc. There's too much going on. Am I making any sense? Is my intuition correct? I feel like a shortboard/fish should be easier than a longboard, but all the experts on the internet tell me I'm wrong.

Great video and explanations, especially the difference between "pumping" and "flow". Question on pumping: is it really more vertical pushing with your legs or more the hula hoop action? Learned on single fins so never really maximized getting water moving through my thrusters. Thanks!
@marmalpa
@marmalpa 5 лет назад
Earl good question about pumping for speed .. Both your analogies are correct , you get lower and the them push off your legs to get the pump actual , while at the same time the hula hoop action with the hips. Good way to describe the surf pump.
@bluehenspecial
@bluehenspecial 5 лет назад
When you lay forward on the board, do your feet land where you need them for the trimming and carving? Or do you pop up and need to move back? I'm on a 6'6" fish, but always land in the middle of the board after my pop up, too far forward for really working the wave.

I usually ride 5'6 - 5'11 ranging from 25 - 31 liters. From my knowledge you ride fish usually on quite short sizes and low volumes, right? I really wanna pick one up, not quite sure about model and volume though. Any1 some advices?

I'm a big fan of over sized fish. basically the same length as my short-board. No need to go shorter, i can do the same turns and cutbacks with a few extra inches, but a lot more waves.

I got a fish that was about 2 inches shorter than me and was around like 32 liter. Rode it well but the covid happened and I gained like 15 pounds and it all went to the gut which blocks my standing position. Just started training my paddle on it again and it took about 3 weeks to get comfortable, still stink at standing on it though, but getting used to it again for sure 😂 I remember the first time I got it, my chest was probably 6 inches below the top end of the board, and I remember thinking holy moly I’m so far up on this thing but I have to be to stand 😂

Thanks a lot for your videos! Most of the people start with longboards, trying to transition to smaller ones later on. Do you think it would be interesting to show this transition like how to position the weight, how to do the runs and etc?
@marmalpa
@marmalpa 5 лет назад
Pasha yes this would be a great board review video . It would make for an awesome and highly informative video . It’s not easy to transition down in board size , especially when jumping down from a long board to a much shorter board .

mpatrzyk1966 I surf all the time with contact lenses. It’s like doing any other thing. Don’t even realise I have them on, except for one time when a rogue wave just flicked one lens off my eye, which was pretty strange tbh

6'1" fish seems too big if your 5'11" 150lbs. are you a beginner? I'm 6'2" 230lbs and surf a 5'11" fish with 40 liters bc waves are smaller and not powerful here in Florida
@mpatrzyk1966
@mpatrzyk1966 5 лет назад
Sean Denney - Thanks for the reply! Actually, yes, I AM a beginner, so I definitely don’t want to get an undersized board. Live in Cleveland, with small, mushy, occasional waves. That said, would you still advise something smaller, or is 6’ 3” appropriate?

Not Pat, it’s too wide of a cut and too deep of a cut for this tail to be considered a swallow tail. Usually swallow tails have cut going in one to two inches , where fishes get as deep at 6 to 8 inches in on the cut . Swallows are around 6 to 7 inches wide from tip to tip, and fishes usually 8 to 10 inches wide , this fish is 8 1/2 wide tip to tip . Hope that helps . One of the next episodes will be all about tail shapes and how they work .
