Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ru-vid.comUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

Nice vid! Love throwing heavers. That 15 footer you got prolly wouldnt cast the weight (usually 8-10oz out there) needed to sit and stay on the ground. Most likely didnt really cross anyone's line bc of how close you were casting to shore. I'd say start off with a 12' that is rated an minimal, up to 10 oz. Most cases, it is 8 and bait. Most of mine are rated 6-12 oz for the drum rods. Get a bigger hook 9/10 J. Get a decent conventional reel (usually size 15 for drum). Shorten up that leader to the hook. You'll be bombing em out there in no time! Should have put a small chunk of that bluefish on. Drum love em. Always a good tactic to use what is presently in the water. Tight lines man.

Yep, same thing happened to me long ago, could never understand how these competition club anglers can stand on the same stretch of beach as I would, but they would just pull out one after the other. So one evening I met one of these guys, and he mentioned a couple of interesting things, besides the obvious things like weather, tides, bait and rigs for your target fish etc, he talked about the little things, such as using fluorocarbon for the hook leader line, braid for longer casting, and one thing he stressed above all : Make sure your hooks are super sharp, or buy chemically sharpened hooks.

There is a casting technique called "Hatteras Cast" on conventional/baitcasting reel and it was originated from there. I found using the "off the ground cast" is much easier to send out your payload but fishing a crowded place like that "Hatteras Cast" might be better.

As a general rule for a shock leader 10 lbs test for each ounce of weight. Standard is 8 ounce pyramid sinker at the point so 80 lbs shock leader MINIMUM! And make sure you have enough to wrap around the spool at least 5 or 6 times. I have a lot of fond memories fishing the OBX. Caught a lot of nice fish there and a TON of Hatteras long tailed flounder (skates / rays) too!

It took me years to learn to cast like that, lots of time with just a weight on the line. And lots of cut it all off birds nests. Cheapest set up that's good is diawa sealine x 30 sha and like a 12' Penn prevail. That's a good starting rig, after that its all about the pendulum cast and practice. You'll be in there in no time. Also no braid just mono 17-20 lbs and a 50 lbs shock leader. Hope this helps you out

They are called surf rods, listen get yourself a 12ft Penn prevail, they're super light and easy to cast, a medium size reel, 40-50lb super slick braid line, spooled almost to the top, a finger protector, 6 ounce weight will be good for practice. You don't need a shock leader for that braid. Start with the weight only, put out about 7-8 ft slack, drop it behind you, hold rod backwards with the weight and line tight, take 2-3 steps forward, forward elbow goes up and let the rest follow that elbow. Start with no power, then introduce power in as you get more confident. You're welcome.
@MackinNC1
@MackinNC1 5 лет назад
Your best bait you had that day was that Blue. Cut it's head off and use the head. put on a 9/0 hook and use 9 ox of weight. your leader is actually a tad bit long. The shorter the better I like the leader only 1.5 inches long. Also, trash the braid. going with 15 or 16 lb main line and 30 or 40 lb shock leader. at some places in NC the locals will really get on you for using braid especially on some piers.

Reel - daiwa slo30, red brakes for newbies.. or if you spike fish & need louder clicker, daiwa, saltist 30tt Rod - Loomis 1448, best IMHO, light enough to hold for 6,8hrs Daiwa ballistic, excellent also 13'2" Line 20,25 sufix tritanium chartreuse Shock leader, 50lb superior or tritanium Use 30lb braid backing & 100yrds topshot... J hook - Mustad,eagle claw 9/0 , galvalum or red last longer & will not pull thru bait on cast... Circle hook - 39960d 13/0 or 14/0 2" - 4", 130lb mono leader 150lb crane swivel No bead 150lb snapswivel or 2/0 coastlock for sinker... Or tie a dropper loop rig so bait and weight are "one" on cast..

Virginia beach was a new spot for me because i live way north and it takes me 14h driving to get to virginia beach. So like you i had to observe how the local in virginia beach were doing.. i had my fresh water lake gears and was catching nothing until a couple of old local guys at virginia beach told me what bait to use.. now all i need is to find the gears so that next time i visit virginia beach i will be able to catch something bigger. In other words, i was like you when you tried north carolina hateras. I went to cap hateras a couple of times but not for fishing. Because travel by car, and we are fully loaded with camping gear, i can not bring a too long rod, 9-10 feet is pretty much the longest i can carry. As for the way you hook the sinker.. i too will have to learn how you do that. But until then i will still need to,practice with my smaller gears 9 foot rod with 4000 reel. And 15 mono line. 2 oz sinker, H

Yes 12 ft or better with a level wind. The puppy drum run the bar out in front of you where the waves are breaking. You want to be just past the bar. Mullet is best but blues will work. You just have to change it out more often if the bite is slow because the blue meat is so soft the rough surf on the banks will tear it off the skin. The after dark bite is usually better but keep the lights to a minimum. Get there early and try to snare some mullet. Love the banks! Cut my teeth in saltwater there 40 years ago. No place better!

Great dude and hes one of those that catched big fish after big fish, at the end of the pier we had a good 10 rods out and like you said just the same 4 people were cstchimg while everyone else including myself was watching. I even bought an open face penn and a 12 ft rod but never managed to land me a fish on that rod at all even with help from the local friends i made, location location location, the bait spot placement is everything

I have a Seigler SM bait caster an open cage not a level wind that I use here in Florida a 12ft rod 20lb mono 40lb mono shock leader I can cast much further with this set up than spinning outfits plus a baitcaster gives you much more battle control over the brutes. It takes practice using this type of reel but once you do it will be your favorite. You can start with a level wind but it limits your distance cast and if a Tarpon is on the level wind can not keep up with the spooling and many fish are lost due to backlash .

I'll be going to Avon, NC in two weeks for two weeks. I have probably spent over a year of my life there and have never fished the point. Your chances of catching a large drum are much better there than other places on the island but I like to relax when I fish and that wouldn't be possible surrounded by so many people.
@tonykomer2997
@tonykomer2997 2 года назад
That's called a cannonball rig. A fishfinder has the longer snood line. (BTW on rigs where there are swivels between the hook line and the rest of the rig the line between swivel and hook or on a drop rig the lines with the hook are called the "SNOOD" line. A true cannonball rig has the hook tied directly to tge shockleader so the hook and sinker come together for the case. You can add a swivel and use a se one piece of line to limit the snood floating distance away from the weight but the hook and weight should make one package when casting.

nice bull reds. It's a lot easier to learn nowadays with youtube. I think of all sorts of questions during the day & 2-3 clicks, boom I'm a KB pro.

Hey, take a week or two. Lake, river, pond,and stream fishing. Camping. ADK Park. To the north-- Canada and the American Thousand Islands (St. Lawrence River/Seaway). To the east--Lake Champlain,Lake George and the Green Mountains of Vermont. To the west-- The Tug Hill Plateau and Lake Ontario. To the south-- The Mohawk Valley, Mohawk River and the Erie Canal. 6.1 Million Acres of wonderful. Check it out...

I love fishing at Hatteras! Super respectful and nice fishermen and an awesome place to fish for puppies, blues, and much much more species! In addition, sometimes if the wind isn't too bad you can definitely use 6 ounce weight on a fish finder rig using mullet, bunker, and shrimp! Love Buxton in Hatteras, NC!!!!!!

How is it possible to have that many people in the same spot and no one gets tangled up. That's just amazing.

They get tangled if you look closer you'll see a guy reeling in his line and weaving in and out of the crowd

Hope to get there in September and use my kayak if the breakers aren't too big and fish for Spanish and Kings. However if a red drum happens to hit, that would be just great. I know the reds head into the sound then to spawn but taking one is just for bragging rights since the must be released.

Senko Skipper No, but after seeing this video I'm concerned there will be no open beaches. I'm going on a family vacation and we hope to spend some time on the beach.
