We used to train on radiation reduction by factors 7. By 7 every 7 hours. Another thought on this is the neglect of nuclear power plants in the event of total war. I live near a gas power station, 20 miles from an air base and 100 miles from a nuclear plant, luckily the prevailing wind had them downwind of me but as its flat where I live 2 of those would end my survival pretty quickly.

I'm a health physics technician. A "police officer" of all things radiation & contamination at both DOE nuclear sites & nuclear power plants. It's my job is to make sure the workers at the facilities stay safe from the health effects of contamination & radiation. He is very very knowledgable for the common civilian but he does have few minor things he is missing. Notably when you take a shower it is to remove contamination not radiation... Contamination can emit radiation (which it will in nuclear fallout) but the biggest factor is to get it off your skin/clothing so it stops irradiating you and so that you do not injest/breath the radioactive dust (contamination) in, making it an internal problem to you or those around you and irradiate you for YEARS to come (your body mistakes it for the danger that it is). Just like dirt you can track in to your pets & family members who also can also inhale/injest it. He's right tho... Best to strip at the door of your house (might be silly because you can't see the contamination) but... LEAVE YOUR CLOTHES OUTSIDE... do an initial wipe off of any skin that your clothes did not cover if possible & run to the shower. Thus maintaining your house as a clean zone. Consider taping doors/window seals & stay away from windows (the most amount of radiation can penetrate these). Radiation is better described as the heat you feel coming from a campfire and contamination is the ash/smoke in the air you breathe… in this severe case tho the ash & smoke will also give off heat as well lol. Nasty business. Hope that helps :)
@howdy9061
@howdy9061 2 года назад
The dangerous part is contamination, i think he said that. The part with stay away from windows is in what regard? I guess particle shouldne be supposed to penetrate windows. Gamma rays are your least concern after the blast is over and for beta you might use some things in front of the window to catch them electrons, right?

I used to be a California OES certified Hazmat Specialist and received training from CalEMA, FEMA, the FBI, Lawrence Livermore National Lab, and US military on radiological emergencies, including nuclear detonation. The information presented here concurs with the training I received. Your best defenses are time, distance, and shielding. Be exposed for the shortest time possible, be as far away from it as possible, and put as much mass between you and it as possible. Distance is a huge key, doubling the distance from it cuts your absorbed exposure to just 25% of what it would have been. Wait for levels to drop by decaying for a few days to weeks (get a Geiger counter and learn to use it!) then evac asap if possible.

Watching the movie again made me realize just how similar the circumstances are to that of the movie scenario and the cold War in general. But no one is talking about this now. We have a group of 12 to 18 young people who meet at our home each week. As of two weeks ago, none of them had any awareness of the circumstances with Russia and neither did most of their parents. I have made a real effort the past couple weeks to teach our own children about Ukrainian history and culture as well as that of Russia, we are learning about how global our economy is and how these situations affect us and we are praying for the people and for peace. We are trying to be proactive in preparing for the future, but as a society we are in bad shape to handle any calamity!

Our local septic tank maker builds concrete storm shelters. Ones with a vent for a stove chimney and a wooden framed entrance opening on the side. Add an extension out from the side with the entrance door, a door that opens inward, enough cement (2 feet) or earth (4 feet), and a waterproof material on the roof (ice guard). It will be very close quarters for two people spending two weeks inside in a worse case situation. The Chinese make a fallout shelter out of crossed tree branches set in a deep, L-shaped trench, covered with earth, leaving both ends of the trench open. A similar type of shelter could be built using 100 inch long pulp logs covering an L-shaped trench. Seeking shelter is an absolute must, but I'd suggest also having some form of radiation detector. I have a keychain from KI4U that's been calibrated to tell you how many hrs/days you can stay in a given environment based upon the radiation levels. Most of the radiation will drop off after 48hr depending on how close you were to ground zero. You could be unknowingly staying in a "shelter" thats receiving low levels of radiation. If you're exposed to it for long enough radiation sickness will occur.

If you have ledges or patios that accumulate fallout, you need to be on the other side of the building with for instance bookcases or filing cabinets between you and the fallout-coated ledges or patios. If you are in an 18 story building so you can be "safe" sheltering in the middle of it, you are in a metropolitan area that is likely to get nuked until there are no tall buildings left to begin with, including from any second or third waves of ICBM attacks. Sadly, I think I live too close to a main target that I doubt I would survive an initial blast. My daughter works in a nuclear power plant and I imagine that would also be a target. Having said that, after the Fukushima incident I added iosat tablets for everyone in my family and purchased and read a book on surviving a nuclear attack just in case. I have done all I can to give myself as much time to hunker in my basement without having to go outside to allow as much of the radiation to dissipate. That’s all I can do. THREE (sorta) MAIN QUESTIONS- Love the channel thanks for all the info you provide. 1. I am a bit confused. If we are outside, get inside and shower, but then you said that water may be contaminated (tap water). Should we just shower quickly and we will be fine, if so how long before it’s no longer safe to use the water? 2. Going the restroom. During the time you said tap water could be contaminated, what about toilet water? We sit down, pee and poop, and then flush. Are we bringing radiation into the room by simply flushing and the new water comes in? Right now our plan is to hunker down in the bathroom. Will the toilet be unable to be used because of radiation (assuming the water network has survived the blast)? 3. Should we try to cover drain holes in our bathroom (sink, shower, toilet) or can radiation not get through there if we don’t use them? Does the unflushed toilet water have the chance of be contaminated even if it has not been flushed after the blast and is just sitting there… since it is connected to the pipes? Can radiation in the toilet get to us? Thanks

I don't think they have as much long term radioactivity, but it would be good to know. One small correction, gamma rays don't decay, they are the result of the decay of unstable elements. Those elements tend to have their own half lives. There are a number of sources for the nasties you likely end up dealing with.

One of the craziest things I was ever taught in the Marines was if you were in the area of a nuclear blast, find and orient you head toward the blast wave without looking at the blast, go prone with your helmet facing the blast, cross your ankles and cover you groin while waiting to blast wave to pass back over you. This was later changed, but you gotta love the 90's.

Kris, amazing and extremely informative video, really well done. However, according to Dr. Peter Pry, the closer the detonation is to the ground (if it detonates on the ground) there will be no EMP effect on electronics. The ideal altitude for a nuclear weapon to issue an EMP is 300 Km above the earth. Electrons in the atmosphere are picked up by the blast and pushed to the ground extremely quickly, and that's what does the most damage. That aside, this is one of the best videos I have ever seen on dealing with a nuclear detonation designed to destroy a city. or suburb. Outstanding research..

After the first few rains you can filter the water. An old army manual says thick clay greater than 6 inches thick will make the water safest.(get it from over 1 foot under the top of the soil) I'd replace frequently, and use activated charcoal after the sediment. Most radioactive isotopes decay within a few weeks to ok. Not cesium tho, it will stay in soil poisoning plants, and anything that eats those. (I don't remember strontium lifespan). I'd have some potting soil indoors for sprouts, basic gardening.

Thank you for another informative video, Kris! I've been watching old Civil Defense videos recently, and it caused me to ponder just how much has changed. Not just the reprieve from nuclear threat, but the collective preparation mindset and government information. One critical area I'd like to see addressed is: oxygen. If we are sheltering in place, protecting ourselves from fallout contamination by sealing off our environment, how do we provide clean air? The fallout shelters of the 50's and 60's were equipped with hand cranked air filters, drawing air from outside...some models also doubled as generators! Pretty cool. I found the instructions on sanitation management during the 2 week shelter period helpful‐--except for the use of DEET to prevents insects 🤦‍♀️

Be in an area far enough from the blast. Just breath the oxygen normal, some leakage will happen. I'd have n95 masks, and cloth would be last on the list. You aren't about to escape it imo. And it's survivable by chance and location. Safe food and water is the long term problem in my view.

I watched 'Threads' just a few days ago, its freely available on odysee 1984 1hr57m. In my opinion its a pessimistic portrayal although not entirely unrealistic, it does also show a nuclear winter a theory which I believe has been largely discredited. Ultimately I feel the film is less about nuclear war and more about societal collapse, its certainly unsettling but also interesting to watch. (edit: grammatical corrections)

This is a great video. I love how you get right to the point. I plan to watch this again in a few minutes and make notes.

How safe would well water be to drink? The day of, a day later, 3 weeks later, etc.?

Good question, would depend how far away the blast was, wind currents, how deep the well is & the type of rock the water filters through. Terrible to think of.

You don't know unless you or civil defense measures it with a radiation meter.

Geiger Counter/s, Hand crank radio or two with torches, Faraday bag to keep them in. Food and water supplies, mask, more food and water supplies. Be aware of potential targets in your area, be aware of prevailing winds from potential targets, more food and water supplies, work out a shelter location (envy those with good basements), lots of apple juice, along with more food and water. Water purifier, medical supplies, weapons, start stashing those bottle caps for currency.....

As a reminder Russian nuclear posture is now full alert. Once tactical nukes start flying it’s not long after strategic considerations are met.
