The first red dot I ever bought, a Sportsman's Guide branded one, failed the very first time I took it out. I'd put in on my 12-gauge and the lens just fell out after 8 slugs despite it claiming to be rated for .50 BMG. My shotgun now wears a 1x prism scope, but for a while I had a red dot co-witnessed with a SeeAll OpenSight. That's not an option on most pistols (though running just the OpenSight is), but for anything with an actual rail it's a pretty good setup. The tritium OpenSight requires no batteries but works in any light or no light, though I got mine before that was an option. Instead, I drilled a hole in the light block and put two tritium vials in it myself.

This video just gave me a great idea for red dots I haven't really seen a lot companies address, especially since tritium is relatively easier to aquire than it used to be.

The overlay method is how the first red dot sights worked, like the singlepoint sights :D

From many years as a revolver shooter my transition to red dots on pistols was very easy because revolvers force you to break your wrist over farther to find the sights, when you move to red dots on pistols not requireing you to break that wrist over farther you tend to easily pick up the dot, me personally I tend to pick up the dot low in the window if anything because of my revolver years,,,, as far as when your dot fails for whatever reason,,,,,, welllll you don't hear many talking about "point shooting" or "instinctive" shooting anymore,,,, both should be practiced to fine polish (same thing basically with different names actually),,, many years ago now I had an instructor for some gun training who relly pushed instinctive shooting back in my law enforcement days,,,,, glad he did because I ahve had to use it a couple times or so in my life and it served me very well or I very well may not be here today making this comment,,,,, it was a charging bear here in Idaho wwhere I live while out elk hunting, the others were wounded elk trying to get away after you walk up on them thinking they are dead after having shot them,,,,, anyhow take some advice from an old timer sonny LOL learn instinctive shooting and master it.

Good info here Mr Ellerman! For pistols im an iron sights guy call me old school 😂. I once put a red dot scope on my sw 22a1 it was ok for a while then I removed because the battery was running out too soon it might be because it was a cheap model. After that experience I never went back to putting electronics on my guns although I had my wife order me a cheap flashlight for my pistol picattiny rails as a Christmas gift wish.

Just use the sights the firearm comes with. If you drop it in a self defense situation and pick it up again at least you don't have to worry about the red dot not working.

Honestly if I'm burning it down on A zone targets at 11 yards and under I never see the dot if it's in the window I'm smacking it. A lot comes down to a consistent grip with no horizontal cant

There are a few thing's to consider and I talk about them in several videos on my channel. First you should have good useable iron sights with your red dot sight. If the glass just crackes then use your irons to verify the dot is zeroed. If not then use your irons. Now if the glass shatters- Will it still show a dot on the glass? Yes good. No bad news your now point shooting. If you can see a dot. Next, is it holding zero? Yes good. No, your point shooting again. Now if the lens falls out... uses your irons. This is a great example of why you should have usable iron sights even with a red dot sight. I showed this in my Foxarmy FXA10 review. 2 is 1, 1 is none.. Also food for thought don't get a sight that has a high self that is nearly impossible to get iron sights over. If you look at the first of this video you'll see there is no iron sight to co-witness though this red dot.. Either replace your iron sights or go with this red dot that has a lower shelf. One easy way to fix that is too have backup irons. Yes, irons are backups in 2023. Always could put a laser light combo. Easy way to do it

Believe it or not Irons fail too,,,,,, happened to me years ago on a Ruger redhawk revovler,,,, the little spring loaded deal that holds the sight on failed somehow and when I pulled the gun from my holster the sight just wasn't on the gun but in the bottom of the holster,,,,, anyone would say it couldn't happen and that Ruger gun is nearly indestuctable about any one would say who knows anything about then at all,,,, but it did happen to me and I'm betting it has to someone else somewhere also,,,, gotta be prepared for the senerio just in case even with irons. EDIT front sight to be exact
