How to Sweep a Doorway | Israeli Special Forces Operator | Tactical Rifleman

This is a slightly more advanced technique for doorway clearing. Not a starting point in your training but a really important skill to possess. In addition to “slicing” a doorway there are other options you can use, depending on what you sense when approaching the door. It’s typically not a good idea to barge into a doorway while clearing a building, especially when clearing by yourself and it is often possible to clear an entire room without having to enter it. It is also generally not recommended to pass across a fatal funnel but there are certain circumstances when it may be the smart thing to do.
If you intend to incorporate this skill into your range training make sure to do it safely and at a point in your training where your fundamental skills are already ingrained. This is another type of drill where you can never dry practice too much. If you don’t have barricades to use on the range you can just mark spots on the ground where the door would be and work on footwork and shooting while moving.

This is very good instruction. I mean that statement. Other video's do not do as good a job in showing you correct angles in which to engage a home invader. Great stuff! I've played airsoft for like 15 years and I love it when LEO's come out to play! My PD had simunitions but its NY so I can't imagine them ever allowing using them with civilians outside of some very limited situations I was in. I got to learn how to clear buildings very young and are SWAT guys ended up buckling to our demands to learn CQB.

I have my conceal carry and am a member of US Law Shield as well. Like you, I hope I never have to use my firearm in self defense. I keep my Driver's License, Concealed Carry Permit, and Texas Law Shield cards together in my wallet. When I got pulled over about 1-1/2 years ago for speeding on the freeway in Oklahoma City, the police officer was very polite with me. He asked if I was carrying. I told him it was under the seat at the moment, I had just left Shabbath services. He said, "Leave it there and we are fine."

Best way to pie a door is to OC spray the annoying private and herd him in as a meat shield. Any threats in the room will engage the annoying private who is always late to 0630 PT and asks the sergeant major stupid questions at Friday release brief. This puts the PVT's front sapi plate, a human body, the PVTs back plate in addition to your plate between you and the threat, providing great cover from which you can engage targets. If there are no threats inside, at least you got to OC the Joe in revenge for the hands across Iraq, police call you did when he lost his PVS14s.

One major flaw I saw was if they can see your shadow, they know approximately where behind the wall you can be. What is to stop a man from shooting through that wall. The person in the room ALWAYS has the advantage.

Brought to mind the 1st confined area sweeper of WW1. A 2 man team each armed with a U.S. Winchester Model 1897 Slide Action Trench Shotgun with 6 12 ga. rounds of 9 .30 caliber buck shot. Ideal tactic was for the 1st man to encounter the enemy & sweep the trench until his ammo was emptied. Then while he reloaded, the 2nd man would continue the sweep.... then continue that hop scotch tactic till both ran out of ammo & then return to resupply. Best of all is this following part... With the Trench Gun gaining in popularity among the Americans, the Germans were dismayed by it. So much so that they began to protest its use in combat, issuing a diplomatic protest against the American use of shotguns, claiming it was prohibited by the law of the war. But we never stopped it! If it weren't for that last part; I'd be just another boring old sh@.

That square tube would not be fun if someone shot the barricade in close and clipped that metal. A rifle round would zip right through but a 9mm will likely be stopped and spall or come back. If there was a risk of clipping the barricade I’d use wood uprights.

You would want to be picking that target up from the left side of the doorway before you go for the slice. Not when you’re stood right in front of it. Especially as a right hander.

It depends where in the room the target is. The other point that people often forget, is that it takes TIME for you to determine "Is it a Threat? Is it NOT a Threat? Is it a Threat that warrants Deadly Force?" This is fast, at one "Human Reaction Time" which is measured at .22 seconds (quarter second for easy math). Remember, you are still moving. So, even when you see the target, you will be more exposed by the time you engage the threat. Sweeping the door has it's advantages, especially with thin walls. However, there are always disadvantages and sacrifices with every CQC technique. Thanks for watching, TR

@@TacticalRifleman I completely agree. The same tactic is used by all armed forces and police. The broad strokes are the same, however each have their own finer details. The way I have always done is to clear as much of the room as possible whilst still in the cover of the doorframe, which would pick up someone standing directly in front of it, before doing a faster 180 across the door. Like I say, many people use the system but have each put their own tweaks into it. It’s interesting to see how other people do it. Keep up the good work.

I see everyone has a great review of this technique but from SF training I’ve seen they do sweep or pie and don’t relinquish dominance of the room but they don’t sweep like this. This can get you shot as you do. I’m not a expert but just learning from some. In and out while advancing seems to be a true human behavior reality when confronted with another gun that KNOWS your there. I know I will be attacked by fans and internet operators but just want to bring to light what other experienced operators have seen others do. Sweep I’m assuming is good if you can somewhat assume they aren’t on to you. Engage accordingly. Peace.

I'm thinking, when clearing with a rifle isn't it safer to switch shoulders depending on which side u going to across the door opening?? One way your whole body is exposed before the rifle is useful while the other way the rifle is first on target followed by your body. I'm left handed so most firearms are not made for me so I tend to switch between hands all the time

Mark, most (99.999) percent of people can only fight EFFECTIVELY with one side. Switching shoulders to pie a corner of cover when static is very common. However, NOT while moving into a room.

Exactly what I was about to say. This would only work against opponents without proper training. In reality if the enemy sees your shadow or the tip of your barrel you are dead 98/100 times. Also i hope when he says „if im on my own“ he means if he is at home having a burglar in one of his rooms. Because in special forces you sure as hell would not clear a room on your own unless youre EOD. The only real way to clear a room in any situation is tossing flashbangs in until even the dust ob the ground is deaf dumb and blind and then storm in with 4-6 men.

That actually sounds useful in the immediate sense. I've read the Virginia statutes but actually making sure sense of them so I know I won't get hauled off to jail is another matter... Like they say you can carry a gun in your car while on school property, but does that mean as a CCW holder you can leave it in your car while elsewhere on that property? Or is only kosher as long as you drive straight through, pick up the kids, turn around, etc? That's the type of thing you don't want to take a chance on and find out you're wrong because you misinterpreted the legalese.

Keep in mind that most interior walls aren't bulletproof. If you cut the pie and see an elbow, for example, shoot obliquely through the wall, especially if you have a long gun. Also, if you have a long gun in a narrow hallway you may have to modify your weapon hold position, and you may not have room to use your arms extended if you have a handgun.

Indeed on the compressed environment problem. I'd think if you sweeped a room like this you'd shoot/warn the target the moment you see him, and conduct the sweep after he's incapacitated, so you don't expose yourself to parts of the room you're not covering.

This is the first thing I thought. He made trips across the doorway like the walls blocked bullets. If it’s drywall then you don’t want to hover or you’ll get smoked. I guess in Europe they got brick walls, but they also don’t have access to weapons as a right, and probably almost zero legal modern rifles, so who cares what the walls are?

@Keith Robicheux Most countries in continental Europe have guns available given the proper licence and training and lack of criminal record. Each country is different. One I know for sure is Hungary where you have to take 2 psych tests 6 months apart while taking a full on training program that rivals a police prep course then pass the test ran by military instructors. At the end Hungarians can get the same handguns or ar15 what are available to americans and able to use them legally for self defense and legally allowed to keep guns fully loaded in their own homes. The castle doctrine is alive and well here. From what I gather it's England that is most prohibitive and Czech Republic most relaxed. By the way not all houses are brick or concrete. Some are log or american type drywall but brick is most common.

One thing I did take from it is how it strangely stretched out the OODA loop. Just knowing somebody may come through that door and being set may make it harder. You would think somebody would just magdump on the door and surrounding walls but there would be that tendency to think you have the advantage but not knowing how to use it. Not many people have the patients and skills to wait for anything when the adrenaline gets pumping but you need to remain still and vigilant. It would be good training for both sides of that doorway!

Overall interesting and well presented. In practise though well trained defending men will be concealed, crouched and with padding surrounding them in case you send a grenade, not standing exposed. Also may have bullet proof armour, difficult to get to. The room may also be with covered windows and dark, making it easy for them to spot you and difficult for you to spot them. Since you may have surrounded the building offer them to surrender, smoke them out, use grenades, flash-bangs and last resort or when dealing with low level combatants do what you suggest. Overall a nice presentation thanks.

really good. I actually like to move across the door at more of an arc. creates a little more distance and a little more visual into the room you're clearing. by moving across the doorway in an arc you can maintain concealment using the walls while getting eyes into the deeper corners of the room.

My guess is that he's born in the USA but of Israeli descent from a parent/s, and used this as an opportunity to go back to Israel to serve in the IDF for a term..

I'm from Israel, and we have something call MAHAL ( IDF Volunteers from all around the world) we got so many peoples from US that coming for few months to training for the military

No! You will need an abundance supply of little ice cubes and perhaps the unforeseen rolls of toilet paper. This will help later if you're on you hands and knees and having to pick up the little rubber ducky.

Hey imri! Thanks for another great vid! Quick question. As a right handed shooter, would there be the time where it is more beneficial to shoulder bump or completely transition to our weak side shoulder when sweeping a door from the right side?

Hey Christian. You can absolutely do either - if you train the hell out of it and make it fluid. I find that if you’re moving quickly or clearing large buildings you’re just not going to switch shoulders 500 times. Another option (what I typically do) is slide the stock in closer to the sternum. That helps you cheat the angle a bit and is still very close to your usual stock placement, as well as still shooting with your dominant eye. Switching shoulders or sides is more beneficial if you’re clearing by yourself and you are being very deliberate and slow. Thanks for the question man.
