hey thanks for the tutorial! the wiki page didn't give me much insight on how to actually convert my notes into flashcards. your video was immensely helpful. what a crazy powerful plugin.
I appreciate your tutorial, without it would not have been able to integrate anki with obsidian. And the neurocache format you showed is way better than anki's long-winded default format.
I get you, setting up some of these things takes time and it can be frustrated. When I'm setting something complicated up, I make sure to take breaks often and get back to it later with a clear mind.
Thanks for the video! The first part is quite clear. Things get a bit confusing when you start showing how to add cards. Instead of showing your favorite note format, I think you could just present the basic format and then introduce your favorite format. If you do another video in the future, for your youtube channel or your classes, consider my suggestion. :)
@@anarosaamorim3851 Hi, can you elaborate on how you export images to Anki? My image references using ![[image.png]] in Obsidian always result in Anki not displaying my image correctly.
Why not just do the flash cards in Anki? I'm not seeing what the benefit is here, if i'm writing notes in obsidian and then want to make a flash card I can just alt tab to anki do the card. In Anki I can I do all kinds of cards from basic, to cloze, to image cloze, to use of audio. In obsidian I have to go to a file dedicated to my deck and remember the proper format b/w all the type of cards I use. Lot more room for error. Am I missing something?
this is your lucky day hahah, it does support images. However I use the "Imgur Community plugin" as a great trick to make dealing with images even easier for this plugin. Keep an eye out on future videos where I'll be covering how to set that up
hey, thanks for watching. I don't use Remnote personally so I havn't tried that one out, you can read more about it here github.com/Pseudonium/Obsidian_to_Anki/wiki/RemNote-single-line-style It looks interesting thought!
Thank you for this detailed video, I do have a question tho, does anyone else experience their Anki completely freezing when syncing thru Obsidian? The only solution I have it to force close the application, but the good new is that the notes still became flashcards when I re-opened anki
happy to hear that Jamie! Yes, that file I created it manually, the plugin doesn't do that automatically. But I found it much more effective to just create a folder and keep every note I export to Anki in that folder
Thanks, Santi, it helps me a lot! BTW, I saw in your edit mode, your link is shortened into [link name](...), would mind to share how to do that? I think it's really cool! Thanks
@@SantiYounger At the very beginning of the video, yours shows [Example](>>) rather than [Example](full link name) in my obsidian. The latter one is so long that makes it hard for reading, especially when it's within a paragraph.
thank you very much for the tuto ! I find that the examples on the github wiki lack a little clarity. Could it be possible to have an example of tia type flashcard, please ? How to insert missing text and its answer ?
that's a great video idea, thanks for the suggestion! I'll add it to the list. However I'll have to improve my regex skills in order to teach it hahah thanks for the support
I have a question, I've been searching the wiki section for this but can't seem to figure it out. Do you know how to create a sub-deck from Obsidian? I managed to create decks but not sub-decks. Also, whenever I want to add a note to an existing sub-deck I can't figure it out how to do it with this plugin. Any tips and recommendations would be appreciated.
Hey @@trriamera , I know what you mean I haven't been able to figure that out either. To be be jonest I moved out of Anki to Mochi and I love it's simplicity. Here's a video I made in case you are interested: The Best Flashcards App For Learning - Spaced Repetition - Mochi: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-36TEyOI7M_c.html
I find it better to create anki cards in Obsidian. Specially when I already have the info I need in Obsidian to convert into cards. Or if I have a lot of cards I want to create a lot quicker. But of course if you are happy with creating your cards in Anki, this process is completely optional.
at the end I found this plugin very complex to use as a long-term solution. So I'm not sure how to add an extra field unfortunately. However if you are intersted I made a new video of the flashcards app I now use and love more than anki ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-36TEyOI7M_c.html hope you enjoy it!
Hey thanks for watching, I just gave it a try, I like it too, I'd like to see which plugin manages photos, links and tags in a better way. It'd be great for both to join forces though, thanks for the recommendation
Almost same bro just after taking note you have manually type flash card. The best feature here is remnote like context😍. The only thing is missing is the cloze feature.
@@SantiYounger im super curious as a new Obsidian user, what do you recommend between both of these plugins for anki? im also having difficulties locating the "For flashcard plugin" the gentlemen above stated
I've used the python script, but the Obsidian plugin is a lot better. unfortunately I don't think I'll make a video on the python script since it's a bit too technical for my current audience. Sorry about that. If you can use a terminal and have configured other apps manually, it shouldn't be too hard to set up. Best of luck!
if I understood correctly the problem is, you can only create new decks and cards from Obsidian to send to anki, the plugin doesn't send form anki to obsidian, only from Obsidian to anki
if you create a new card you need to make sure you make sure you write this TARGET DECK: Name-of-your-deck at the top of the note that will contain the cards. You can only write that one time per note. So if you want to send cards to different decks you need to create separate notes in Obsidian one note per deck Hope that helps
Thank you for the video. Did you manage how to add custom tags for specific notes in one file? Let say I have note Python notes in one file (tags: python), but one of them is generally about programming (tags: python programming). Neuracache multiple tags notation (e.g. "#flashcard #python #programming") does not work with that plugin at the moment.
thanks for watching! I havn't made much use of tags in anki yet, I recommend posting in the plugins github page asking for help there, since I'm not sure to be honest
Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. All my cards have now an ID, this is a nightmare. Does someone know how to delete the ID without going through all of my notes? Thank you.
oh no, that's crazy. That's really annoying, try writing it up as a Github issue to see if there's a way, sorry I can't be of more help github.com/Pseudonium/Obsidian_to_Anki/issues
Hi Santi, thanks for the video. I wish I had seen this 2 weeks back when I tried to figure things out on my own. Quick question - is the console still visible in Obsidian? on Mac, I tried both CTRL and Cmd Shift I, but did not see the console
Thanks Santi! Very helpful! I have a Question, do you know how to combine this Neurocache Style in Obsidian with Cloze Deletions. I've been trying with no success. Thanks in advance!
hey, I recently decided to go back to the basic style to make this thing easier, since the neuracache style was giving me issues, so I'm not sure if cloze would work with neuracache format, but I'm sure it works with the basic style. I didn't cover it in the video, but there are good resources to it if you need it. I have links at the end of my blogpost to useful parts of the documentation (link in description) hope that helps
Hey unfortunately I don't know if it's possible, since making this video, I moved to another app called Mochi which is great for audio. I made a video about it, just search on RU-vid "Santi Younger Mochi" hope that helps
I have a card set up where I need to fill 3 fields, question, hint and answer, is there a way to do this with the clean neuracache line? it only uses the question and hint fields.
I get you Remnote still has some issues with images. in that sense this method is better. Images can be added from an Obsidian attachments folder. Or even better you can use the imgur plugin to make it more compatible, I made a video on that it's call "using images like a pro" hope that helps
@@estherf6242 Actually, I was having the same problem with RemNote, sometimes images don't appear in the flashcards queue. I was testing Remnote for the past month, but today I'm moving back to Anki. The plugin I shared in this video can be sometimes useful when creating a lot of anki cards at the same time. But I've started to notice a better experience creating cards directly into Anki. Let me know if you have Anki questions I can help with, since it takes some time to get used to it, it's not that easy to get started with it
@@SantiYounger What I am doing is I'm using RemNote in the browser. The images export okay that way, the bigger problem seemed to be with desktop (idk if that's what you used). But I still don't feel like I can trust RemNote with keeping my data because I had issues (in desktop, in browser they were still appearing, but issues nonetheless) with disappearing images, so I'm writing my notes in Google Docs using RemNote syntax (- for bullet points) and pasting them in RemNote, and then exporting to Anki. Remnote has no problem recognizing it. It's one extra step, sometimes a little more if I'm using "extra card detail" for sure, but since I use it for med school, it still saves a lot of time than having to go through all my notes creating questions. I tried for a bit taking notes only as Anki cards, but I definitely feel like I need something a little more bigger picture for me to look into if I forget something. Even with tags, most of the times I need to check something I only have my phone, and Ankidroid isn't the most friendly tool for that so having to check something quick is much easier if it's in specific folders as I can do in google drive. Writing the lecture notes in questions format then pasting them in Anki can be a good option as well but i'd be more manual work than using RemNote to export (if you have a lot of material). I heard about using excel to anki, but I hate excel's format so, not for me. As for Obsidian, what made me a little cold about it was not being able to see images in Edit Mode. I tried that way with RemNote and it worked for me, so that's what I'm using right now. It's very useful for me when prioritizing contents as well, because I can watch a lecture, have the cards ready for that lecture, but if I have contents that are more urgent (ie = I don't have a Immunology exam, only seminars, so studying the whole content isn't as urgent as it is studying Anatomy that does have an exam) I can delay exporting them to Anki and only do so when I'm done with the more urgent contents, and then I can review it quickly and export to Anki. It's not ideal, of course, to delay the reviews, but sometimes you gotta prioritize lol. You could do that with Anki as well, but it would be less organized since Anki isn't really meant to work as a database for notes.
@@estherf6242 I get you, it does sound like Remnote is what you need. I would give Remnote a chance if were you, since it seems to solve a lot of the issues you are having. Yeah the images disappearing is definitely a Remnote desktop app problem. I'm pretty sure it's related to the local folder where Remnotes makes backups in your computer. If you feel Remnote is the best for you, you can join their community in Discord, it's great and I'm sure they can help you solve it. Remnote seems to be hiring more people to make the app more stable. So it might be worth it for you to wait a little bit for things to get more stable. I really want Remnote to succeed, even though for the time being I'm going for Anki, like you said Anki's big disadvantage is the mobile app not being excellent, plus having to do a more manual process. I'm willing to put up with those difficulties, consider how great Anki is, but Remnote is totally worth it. Best of luck
When I synch the Obsidian with anki, the cards are not genereated, even tho I followed evry step. Obsidian tells me the connection worked, but nothing happend. Has anyone a solution?
my pleasure, I was using Manjaro Linux with Awesome Window Manager in this video. But now I use Garuda Linux and I love it, a lot easier to maintain and use compared to Awesome WM. How about you?
@@VictoriaHelena @Marilyn Vanegas Linux definitely helps you understand computers in a deeper way, and can definitely be a way to get more familiar with programming. Best of Luck, I highly recommend you follow Distro Tube on RU-vid, if you don't already, he is a great teacher of Linux
Hello, I have tried to send a deck of a page to Anki, but the problem is that another page that I did not ask him to send also sends it, the solution is in the Frozen Fields Line [FROZEN] option, but I'm still not sure about how does it work Hola, he intentado mandar un deck de una pagina a Anki, pero el problema es que otra pagina que no le pedi que envie tambien lo manda, la solucion esta en la opcion de Frozen Fields Line [FROZEN], pero aun no estoy seguro de como funciona
that's strange, I haven't had that problem sorry I can't be of more help. maybe try creating a github issue, there they might be able help you figure out what the problem is. github.com/Pseudonium/Obsidian_to_Anki/issues
that's interesting, It might be achievable but I'm not sure. I'm still learning regex. Try asking in the github issues of the plugin if you get a chance! sorry I can't be of more help
Hey! it's definitely a bit tricky to set some things up. I recommend checking out the blogpost I wrote on this santiyounger.com/obsidian-anki/ specially the links at the end of the blogpost that link to the most useful parts of the documentation / manual in github hope that helps!
Why not just use anki alone instead of adding Obsidian to it? I mean, as I see it, you are doing the exact same thing in Obsidian as in Anki the only diffrence is the Obsidian way is 10 times more complicated.
to be fair, this is a good point. The reason to want to use this method is to integrate flashcards with the rest of my notes. But I changed my mind and now I create flashcards directly in Anki
@@SantiYounger Hi and thanks for the answer. Now I can start using the Anki version instead of trying to under stand this Obsidian way. I´m too old and stupid for that 😄
I don't know if it's possible, since I made this video I moved to Mochi, I made a video about it, but unfortunately it doesn't yet have those features Remnote has image occlusion in paid version. but at the end of the day just Anki is the most powerful free solution
Hey, you can check if there's a solution here github.com/Pseudonium/Obsidian_to_Anki/issues if not you can create a post and explain your problem to get some help

Man, you really need to organize your thoughts or have a clear plan when recording a guide. It's frustrating to watch you try to explain something while skipping over important details without any explanation.
