How to Synch a Portastudio with a Korg Volca or Pocket Operator

I'm in the middle of writing an electronica track using tape loops, portastudios, teenage engineering pocket operators and Korg Volcas with no external hardware or software sequencers ....
I hit a snag with getting the portastudio to send sync to the POs and Volcas, so I thought I'd make a separate video discussing the various ways this gear can be used together and showing my workaround for the sync issue, which involves using a pre-amp pedal to boosts and alter the low end of the sync signal coming from cassette.
In this video I mention a comedy cover song I published where I used bouncing without sync to get more that 16 bars out of the onboard sequencer of a PO-32, here is the link to that video;-

This channel has got to be the most thorough and extensive source for Portastudio info on RU-vid. Keep it up, man. I'm learning a lot here. ✌️

Somehow in all the years I've been using these things I've never used the sync function. Maybe now I will.

David that's a generous compliment....When I started getting into this heavily about 5 years ago there really wasn't much out there; Its nice that there are a few channels now - yours, 424 recording, multitrack cassette fans, 3rd island - making content on this topic.

How did I manage to miss this video !! Better late than never I guess. I went and purchased a Syncman unit. Have to confess I haven't actually used it yet but it's on my list

Great video, you explained the process in a very clear way! I’ve tried recording Volca sync out on tape but I guess it wasn’t loud enough (or maybe it was very noisy because it came out very imprecise)! What about recording a hotter signal on tape from the volca sync out using the pedal booster? I’ve solved this issue using a click from synth1 (a plain Square wave), recording it loud enough on tape. I noticed now that this tascam model does not have gain trim pots per single channel, so maybe reaching the correct loudness of the click might require an external boost during the recording phase, in this way you would not require it later, could it be possible?

Yeah I suspect you're right, if i did this a few times and experimented with levels to tape during tracking of the sync signal I could get it so the preamp pedal is unnecessary on playback. The 414 does have per channel gain trim btw, there are small sliders to the left of the Faders instead fo rotary controls.

@@Tetrakan Now I’ve seen them! :D did not notice them watching the video from mobile! Keep up the good work mate, looking forward to your next video!

Glad I found your channel. I’ve got a question, if you wouldn’t mind answering, and thanks if you do. So I’ve got a tascam dp-32sd and it doesn’t have midi. I have maybe 6 or 7 synths, and I want to build tracks by putting down a drum track and building off of it later. I need the tracks to sync obviously, and I’m wondering if that is what you are doing here, or if you’re just syncing them for live playing. Thanks

This is a must see tutorial. I was wondering how to actually use this sync feature. Would be great to see how to link up with a DAW like Logic or smth. Thank you!

I also got this to work with a Korg Sq1 And a Porta 05. I used focusrite to get the signal hot enough. Who needs midi 🤣🤣

Definitely do more videos like this. I just got my 414 and am trying to to get it all set up. It would be cool if you did one WITH a DAW. (by the way what are the cords you have plugged in "Line Out". its like RC to 1/4 inch or is it duel on each end?

Thanks. I meant to do a segment abotu the cables but forgot...there are a variety of RCA to jack connectors being used here, not the most efficient but just what came to hand first;- mono RCA to mono 3.5; 2 x RCA to stereo 3.5"; mono RCA to 1/4" jack. The sync inputs and outputs on the volcas are stereo but using just one side works. Does that answer your question? if not comment back and I'll try to be more specific.

@@Tetrakan it does and doesnt. I got the left and right one but I am guessing I have to plug it into both my interfaces inputs and do some panning left to right on each channel on my DAW? im getting the 2 RCA to mono with only one 1/4th jack tomorrow. If you ever make a full cord breakdown I will definitely watch it lol.

Very informative. Thank you! Would this also work for syncing a Syncaset 238 with let's say a 488 mk2 for example? I managed to sync the 238 to Pro Tools already but haven't tried any further.

I might try something like that myself one day, but until I do, I don’t really know. I think probably there needs to be a computer providing master tempo to both tape units via an external sync to MIDI adaptor

@@Tetrakan Yes, something like that seems to be needed. I saw a video where a Tascam ATS 500 synched two 238; that was awesome, but those ATS 500's seem to be made out of Unobtainium theses days.
