I like how you show what you're doing at every step. Sounds basic, but not many sewing tutorials actually do this - they're like "then we sew on the sleeves on both sides" or "you can serge the edges or zigzag them" and just skip to the next step like it's obvious. You took those couple seconds to show how it's done, which is absolutely essential for a beginner like me. Great tutorial, now I feel encouraged to try again with a dress that I messed up (first attempt at sewing) 🥰

I’m happy to hear that & that’s exactly why I show everything step by step. Also sewing skills take time to develop so if you get it on you second or even 6th attempt then Your doing awesome & just keep going. It’s actually a lot harder then it looks. My students always tell me that I make it look easy & I tell them it’s cause iv been sewing for 25 years!!! Lol . So just keep at it 👏👏👏👏

"If you don't have a dress form, just put it on yourself. You're gonna do all the things I'm gonna do on the dress form, but you'll do it on yourself" 2 minutes later: "To keep the side seams and front from moving around, I'm gonna push pins DIRECTLY INTO THE DRESS FORM" 😆
@SewAnastasia

Nice. You can wear a tank top under your dress and pin the side seams to your under shirt if you are not using a dress form. Thanks for watching :)

This was so incredibly helpful! I find pretty dresses like this one all the time, take them home, but end up never wearing them because they just don't fit right and altering them seemed too daunting a task. Your video encouraged me to give it another go! Thank you for providing such excellent instructions! ❤

I ordered a beautiful dress from an outlet store for 40 bucks that was originally up to 200 in retail price. I started sewing a few months ago and since i made some bad experience with having my clothes taylored at a store, i am eager to do it myself. Im so scared of doing anything to it, this video sure helps! Thank you so much xx

You can do it!!! It might take a few dresses to perfect it but you will get it! I also suggest practicing on a few thrifted dresses you don’t care about first in case you mess up…but you will be good as long as you try on your dress as you go & don’t cut anything off till you try it on. Happy sewing! If you think of any other questions while your sewing let me know. I’d love to make a video about it.

@@SewAnastasia thank you so much for your answer and the great tips. I decided to send the dress back because the alterations that would've been needed just really exceeded what i can do at this point. As you said, i'm gonna try altering less important things before projects like this one. Very smart advice😁♥️ Right now i'm sticking to other sewing projects (that you can't wear), i'm sewing my first quilt for instance. This way even though i might mess some things up a little, the finished item is still usable when its done. And i can really learn and perfect handling the machine and all that!

Thank you for the informative video. You know it's a great video when it's still a top result a few years after release :] One question: what is the advantage of chalking the pinned seam lines and removing all the pins before sewing rather than removing them as you sew the seam? And how do you keep the two pieces of fabric from sliding and ruining your seam if they're not pinned? Thanks!
@SewAnastasia
@SewAnastasia 3 месяца назад
You can always re-pin them after you true your seam. I tend to hold my fabric v.s. pinning a bunch while sewing. Thank you for watching.

I recently purchased a collared jumpsuit that I absolutely love, but the top or bodice is too long making it overlap over my waistline. I can take it back but I really want to make it fit and a smaller size is sold out. I was not able to find a RU-vid video that seemed to answer my problem until I got to yours but then I saw that apparently the garment you were working on did not have facing and certainly did not have a collar. I didn’t know if they were any tips online or any of your videos that might address this issue. So I will have to take the sleeve off, detach the collar on the sides, shorten the shoulder seam and assemble it all back. In my experience it will be difficult for me with my ability to be able to attach a collar back in a way that looks professional. So that’s why I was searching for this issue and came upon your post but it wasn’t exactly my problem. Don’t know if you have any additional videos plus I would like to know where you buy your chalk applicator and refills and the namebrand thank you.

If you took it in a ton you will need to take in the sleeve too & possibly draw a new sleeve cap curve. If you just take it in as much as I did then you can just ease it back in with no further alterations. Hope that helps!

Do you teach more alteration techniques? I spent thousands of dollars on a diploma in fashion design that's two years long and in that time, we only had ONE 6 hour class to cover alterations!! It went over only very basic things, we were never taught what to look for when altering a garment or why we needed to alter something a certain way, or how it would affect the pattern. My teacher was too vague and couldn't answer my questions and I feel cheated. This 20 minute video was WAY more detailed and helpful than that class. So I'm wondering if you do more alterations classes like this one that can help me build up a foundation of knowledge and skill? I want to make costumes for theater and movies so this skill is VITAL.

Probably both sides but it depends on how it’s fitting you. If your busty you could need to take it in more at the back. Make sure to keep it balanced by keeping you new seam at the side seam & that it’s not pulling more towards the front or the back. Keeping it balanced it key to a good fit.

@SewAnastasia
@SewAnastasia Год назад
Sounds like they are just being lazy & don’t want to fuss with any other style lines. It is definitely easier to just snatch in the sides but you can lose shape or move the style lines in a way that unbalances them. We’ll hopefully next time you can tailor your own dress 👗 🎀

Wow!! That was such a mean comment, from Simpsons Love!! Whatever happened to "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all!! " You are a talented lady, and you make excellent sewing tutorials!! However, your voice is a bit high pitched. Maybe, try lowering it and/or speaking slower!?!?

Thank you! Very helpful cause I do that too. Buy or get garments too big that I like and need to make them smaller to fit me and your video was just what I needed. Especially sleeves and around shoulder arm. I get that big arm hole that hangs under the arm. Thank you 👍 awesome 😊

I'm so glad you found the video helpful! It's always frustrating when we find clothes we love but they don't fit quite right. I hope the tips in the video will help you make those garments perfect for you!
