if your project doesn't need the full width and/or you don't want the character the nail holes give this is a fast and simple way to maximize the usable board length . it's frustrating to do the work to get boards off and only half or less are usable . great tip , thanks for sharing .

Absolutely the way to go if you're just after the boards.👌🏽 I use the rafters too and prefer to dismantle the entire pallet with the pallet buster. If I didn't need the rafters, this would definitely be my "go to" method. Cheers mate 👍🏽 I've also noticed that most of the real damage comes from stubborn nails, they might have been driven in way to far, or have rusted themselves in. So what I've found is, if you drive the nails in a couple of mm and break that seal the come out far easier and far less damage if any at all...😉

@@TheWoodenRider That's how it works for me. If the first board is stuck hard that the board cracks a little, I stop grab the hammer and a good sized nail punch, couple of smacks loosens the nail from either the growth of rust or gum from the tree and they come out with ease.👍🏽 Same goes with those nails that pull through the board and stay in the rafter, they're stuck hard too, couple whacks and out they come easy with the claw hammer or small crowbar.👍🏽

i have been fabrication a press that holds the middle 2x4 and presses all boards off in one shot. i have broke down a few hundred and the press saves you. also

@@fabulousbrad Sweet, sounds like an absolute winner and time saver. 👍🏽 Do you have any footage of it in action? I built my entire shed (4 rooms) insides, walls, floors and ceilings with nothing but pallets. And loads and loads of them.

My problem is not taking them about. It’s the tiny pieces of wire that comes from the nails are jacking my planer and jointer blades. I have a handheld metal detector to point where they are but how do I get them out.

Look for a tool called a "cat's paw" or you may have to use plyers - there is no great way that I know of

Look in my pallet dismantling playlist, one of my recent videos shows how with a circular saw and a demolition blade. This is in my opinion the easiest method so long as the pallet is stable.

Reciprocating saw + demolition blade and cut through the nails.This however leaves a lot of metal left in your boards, so act accordingly before using tools on the boards, or running them though equipment.

Nails are still in the middle? Now you lost at least 4” of wood? Using the car jack to separate the wood is just as easy and you don’t lose the wood.

thats how i do it. if you set the depth and snap a line you can get max length. either way i would rather just remove two nails than a bunch. i burn the rest.

i get sweet pallets from work. 80 inch 2x4 and 4x4 at 64 inch all i do is remove 24 nails and i get 12 2x4 and 3 4x4.

We all go through cheap tools when we learn a new trade, I've been working with computers for almost 40 years and I still see a bunch of people using freeware - when we don't know, we don't know I do have a very nice 7 1/4 dewalt saw now as we will agree that this ryobi is garbage
