How to take apart Hot Wheels using a drill. DRILL BIT SIZES INCLUDED!

MY VERY FIRST VIDEO!!! The start of it all!
A quick video to help a friend understand the process of opening Hot Wheel cars and to prepare for tapping the body. I list the drill bit sizes you will need to first drill a pilot hole, then break the rivet head off, and lastly the final pilot bit to run a tap down to screw the car back together. I was not intending to post this video to RU-vid, so it is uncut and not edited. Never the less, our RU-vid journey begins! Thank you for watching!

First off, never place the car upside down on metal shavings, you are asking for a scratch. Secondly, tape your 5/64th drill bit about an 1/8th to 3/16 of an inch down so you do not drill too far into the post. Stop at the tape edge, otherwise you can go right through the hood or trunk of the car.
@HonestDiecast
@HonestDiecast 2 года назад
Its fine to place the car upside down on metal shavings if you're repainting the car. Drilling should be the first step before any paint work. If you're wheel swapping then yes, best to put down a microfiber cloth on a clean surface. After drilling countless cars, I can gauge the proper depth to drill the post so I do not use tape. Someone first starting off could use tape as a marker until they get the hang of it and are able to gauge the drill septh properly. Thanks for the advise, Lou. 👍

Is your initial 5/64 pilot hole the correct size for the 3mm tap?
@HonestDiecast
@HonestDiecast 3 дня назад
Yes it is Josh, 3/32 is perfect for a 3mm tap.

I wish hotwheels would go back to making all metal bases
@HonestDiecast
@HonestDiecast Год назад
Yeah that'd be nice. Some of the bases are a lot easier to work with being plastic though so its not a terrible thing at least. 👊😁👍

Don't forget to use OIL when drilling!
@OfflinePSYCHO
@OfflinePSYCHO 6 месяцев назад
Why?
@HonestDiecast
@HonestDiecast 6 месяцев назад
Its personal choice but I don't use oil. I use Milwaukie titanium bits and they last a long time.

When you break off the tabs for the wheels how do you secure the new ones in?
@HonestDiecast
@HonestDiecast 3 года назад
Hey Scott, when I drill the cars Ill run a 3mm tap into the posts and secure them with very short 3mm button screws. The key is to drill deep and straight with your pilot bit, it makes the task very easy! 😁👊
@macsmusicchannel8980
@macsmusicchannel8980 3 года назад
@@HonestDiecast Scott was asking how you keep the new wheels in place. Not the posts to hold the base on.
@HonestDiecast
@HonestDiecast 3 года назад
Got it Mac, I misunderstood! My apologies! You can break those tabs as the interior portion will hold the wheels down anyways. 😁👍

How can i fix it if it went of center?
@tirecheck
@tirecheck 3 года назад
Are the screws self tapping
@HonestDiecast
@HonestDiecast 3 года назад
They are not, you have to drill then run a tap through. Self-tappers have a habit of splitting the posts because they are pushing a lot of material outwards as they get run down. When you run a tap, the material gets caught in the grooves of the tap instead of just pushing it out of the way.

what drills do you think i should get that is on amazon and is good for hot wheels and beginners like me?
@HonestDiecast
@HonestDiecast 3 года назад
I would recommend getting titanium bits. Even though the work is considered "light", titaniums will last longer and the risk of snapping a bit off in the post will be a lot less! 😁👊👍

what if the rivet is metalv
@HonestDiecast

The rivet is metal slefts, its zinc aluminum and part of the body. During assembly the lower portion of the post is crushed and thats what keeps thencar together. 👊😁👍

It feels like when I’m drilling it’s barely getting into the metal, even watching others it’s like y’all do it with ease one handed and what not, I’ll be 2 handed leaning on my drill with a vice holding the hotwheel and it won’t do anything I’m like Wtf
