I had a math teacher in high school who taught everything from Basic Math to Calculus and she taught it in a way that anyone could learn. The concept of the greater and less than signs always confused me but when she said they will always point to the smallest number in a true answer was something all my other teachers never taught; that simple piece of instruction was enough for a lot of people who were struggling with math classes begin to learn without struggling.
Why is it important to take notes while your teacher is talking? You want to take notes so that you don't have to rely on your memory. 1. Preview text. Spend 15 minutes to become familiar with the lesson that will be discussed. It will help a lot for you to follow during class. 2. Review the notes. Spend 5-10 minutes before class reviewing the notes about your previous class. One of the reasons why you should read preview text and review notes is to help in deciding which information is important. If you're ever in doubt of noting something, write it. It is better to have too many notes than fewer notes. 3. Go on a diet. Even though it is better to have too many notes than fewer notes, writing enough notes is more preferred. → Use abbreviations. Writing abbreviations can help you take notes faster. (e.g. Reconstruction = R, sounds absurd but hear me out). Using "R" for "Reconstruction" is faster but how can you identify the word? We can go back to the first point, preview text. While preparing for your next class, take note of long words, names, and etc. to track which word it is. → Leave out unimportant words. Notes during a lecture are not required to be beautiful, it will slow you down. Try leaving out unimportant words and correct your grammatical errors later on. → Supporting Details. Main ideas are always included in the notes so go on a diet with supporting details. 4. Lecture style. Know how your teacher's lecture flows to focus on which details should be taken note of. It is good to know where the important information is located, it could be in the visual aids, dictated examples, or just the explanation. → Show notes to the teacher early for evaluation. Most teachers would be delighted to see your notes, so show them and humbly ask for an evaluation. This way, the teacher can point out flaws in your notes which you can improve later on the semester which translates to better grades. 5. Use a good note-taking method. There are many kinds of methods for note-taking, but we'll do Cornell note-taking.
I am 43 and, I'm going to try to get my GED. I've always struggled in school especially when it comes to reading out loud and taking tests so I am watching this video so I can prepare myself and learn how to take notes...
I'm not bitter, but I find it amazing how the school system completely fails to teach you how to learn. If you packed this into the curriculum I'm sure you'd save many students a lot of hassle and have them learn more in the end, even considering they'll be occupied learning these techniques for some time.
That's a secret to life in general, if you sound like you know what you're talking about, people will listen and not question you. Politicians, TV evangelists, and con other artists learned this technique early on in their career. I'm not saying this guy is shady, just that other people in other walks of life may be charismatic but have no clue what they're talking about.

My English is my second language. When I’m taking notes during lecture I have to try to understand what does professor said. If there’s a new word that I didn’t understand, I consult the book and review them. This is some tips to help me a lot and make me a better note taker at any speed.
This guy is really good, I would recommend everyone who is in the same position as me to watch this - those who are currently experiencing 7 weeks preparing for their first year of university
I great Thank You from a fellow instructor! This is my first semester teaching College Success class and I used your video to help my students take better notes!
This is really good stuff. I watched this 3 years ago when I started 10th grade and it really helped me. Now I'm watching it again to prepare myself for my first year of university and it's still as helpful as I remember it to be back then :)
This is great information I wish I had had went I was in school; not just college, but all through my schooling. Folks who are taught this now, are really fortunate. Hope they will take advantage of dedicated teachers like this gentleman.
His way of teaching is really good and I can easily understand every word he says . Even though English is not something that I easily understand but he is saying it in easy and simple words. Also about the note taking tips are absolutely perfect for me.
I Love this class, even thogh I am not a native english speaker I easely fallow along. When I had to go do school was very boring, but this class was very entertaining, also I appreciate the teacher's charisma.
I started watching this gentleman's presentations only yesterday. I hit upon the link by chance. After listening to the first video clip, I couldn't stop myself from watching a second one, and a third one. This one must be the fourth, I guess. As I'm learning ESL, these lectures are very useful to me. They are also useful academically. His voice is so clear that I can do a lot of practice on listening. I like these very much.
Outstanding video!!! I am looking forward to watching his other videos. I am 54 and it has been a while since I graduated college. I am going back to school and I think his videos will help me.
Ok, so it's been 6 years since you posted that comment. How did you do in College? Getting good advice is only half the battle, implementation is also paramount.
Surprisingly thst the vid was 10 years ago. Both quality and content are very good. Thank you so much from Vietnam for those meaningful shares that you did!
I'm from brazil, and I've learned english for years and this is helping me a lot. I hope I find some university that has a english course. My dream is study in the US. I hope one day I can take it.
You can also go online and search for Cornell Note Outline and print out as many of which ever you want. My school uses this note taking technique and it's really helpful
When l first started my course approximately two years ago, I wanted to motivate me in making sure l get the best out of my studies. I can say without this gentleman l could not have achieved what l have accomplished so far. Make sure you check out all his other videos too, l guarantee your coursework, assignments and study skills etc will improve. I am a product of his material.
I'm now doing post grad study. This would have been useful in grade 9 or 8! I was never taught how to write an essay, how to take notes, how to study even. I could have done a lot better a lot sooner if I'd had a few classes like this! Every Single Student Should Watch This Video!!! Thank you. Better late than never I suppose.
A big, "Thank you!" This professor gave the most helpful and detailed information regarding College study skills and note taking out of every other video on RU-vid.
For those who are not structured in teaching, write the information but then use post it notes if they go back to already writing notes. That way the information is not missing and that it stands out for acknowledgement.
You are a great teacher. I enjoyed this classes. I learned differents strategies, how to take and review notes in classes. I may apply as financial teacher. Thanks you.
I love the way teach! I watched your lectures many times already but never felt enough. Whenever I become a teacher or lecturer, I will implement your method!!!!
LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! Realized that I wrote too much in my notes, which made it difficult to keep up.This has dramatically helped me out!! Thank You!
I cannot stress this enough, but every professor i ever had a "recommended" reading in the textbook for the lectue. Read or skim through it before class. NOBODY does this and you will look reslly smart when you ask intelligent questions and respond to professors questions. You can also ask questions about things you are unclear on. It also helps to make abbreviations for the class notes.
So far this is one of the best videos for a College student. Such a clear, organized, helpful, clear Professor! I wish all the teachers were like this!! Thank a lot for helpful tips, I am definitely going to use this methods in my upcoming Fall Nursing classes! God bless you! :-)
Taha Sürmen Does this help?: www.lbcc.edu/LAR/documents/SS%20video%205%20Better%20Lecture%20Notes.pdf Got it from the link in the description: www.lbcc.edu/LAR/studyskills.cfm
wow! awesome, I'm talking really poorly in english and learning is hard for me, but this time when I opened this video I listened for total 45 minutes and I was understood most of things. Good job, you re the best teacher ever ;)
oh my goddd, he is an amazing teacher that I haven't ever seen before. In fact, he helps me so much and I hope that I can apply what he teaches in my study. Thanks a lotttttt
His lession is much more interesting and informative than ones i attend in my university. I grasped all the messages he imparted even my English listen skills are not good
Ohhhh...my God,your the funniest,😂😂 and one of the best teacher, you joke,in a very good way,I just wish all teachers can be like you, more love from Kenya🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪#2019-class101,I love the way in this class you can just see few, students, but the video have,5.7k..likes🙌🏽,I feel all this, lectures are ment for as!!!!..thank you
Wow. This is soooo helpful. I am so glad that I bumped into your channel before I enroll to my university!!!! I think this is the class for every student that needs to be studied start from maybe high or even middle school! A huge thank you!!!
I can't believe that you have to teach college students basic info on how to take good notes. I hope these kids pay attention. This prof appears very sincere.
Really goo video, he speaks cleared and slow I love that. I'm not too so good on understanding any video. However I believe I almost understand everything he is teaching. He is very professional and understandable.
This was excellent. However, I've run into a few too many professors who are all over the place and I struggle to figure out how to take notes from them. It's like this stream of consciousness that just spews forth with no direction whatsoever. I then wind up trying to take all my notes from the textbook to make up for this. Needless to say, that winds up being a ton of notes and hard to keep up with.
I am going into uni next month so maybe I don't know, but can't you approach the prof. and ask him nicely if he can at least say that this is an important part that should be written down?
As a matter of fact, you are such a great and honest teacher. You are making a great deal of effort in order to convey the message of that study skills item (( taking notes)). Keep it up
I had a History and Science teacher in high school in the 1980s who taught us about taking abbreviated notes and such that we would need to college. Their method was very close to this instructor's method and I used it later on in business meetings and when taking and preparing minutes. I've seen other videos on the Cornell Method but this is the first one that made sense on how it's actually used.
I found this really useful. He's a very sincere teacher and engaging (even on a topic that is innately quite dry!) I wish all teachers were as clear and helpful as he is!
Wow! I'm just so impressed about your excellent tips especially the tip about to show the notes to our teacher this is a very good way to know him teaching style. Thanks a lot!
I am a second year DVM student but I don't take note in class cause I didn't know how to take not . I normally sit, listen and whenever I try to write my lecturer usually move to the next slide, and I Will be left out, because of this I wait till the lecturer give the materia. I realized I was suffering with that. But now I can start taking note in class. Love you Teacher.
Thank you for the great lesson. I have learned so much about Cornella notes, and even to understand to review from the previous notes to make it even better. Thank you again. I wish I watched this video way before university workloads start. It's a blessing for anyone study at high school, tafe, or university watching your videos.
