Another great video, Danae; thank you! One thing that I do is hold my hands under warm running water while stretching. The heat helps make my hands more flexible. Another thing, which I would really love to see comments on, is that I use an electric hand massager. I'm an older player and have arthritis in my thumbs. The massager uses a combination of heat, pressure, and vibration to relax my hands and improve circulation. The particular machine I use is the Legra Massager found on Amazon. I would love to know if you or any of your followers have tried this.

All of this is terrific; thank you for this video. I learned some new stretches and other things. Stretching becomes more important with age, also being patient and attentive to the body. When it tells you "Take a break," or most of all if there is cramping or pain, stop.

This is good also for amateur pianists like me ). I never thought how much I strained my right shoulder until my teacher "forced" me to relax very consciously for a coupĺe of days and be aware of my body. And relaxed wrists make a huge difference. All else -- I absolutely agree. But on the top of a practices is training the mind...

As far as nails go, I used to try to cut them close especially at the side of the thumbs and would always go too far and end up with sores that take while to heal. What work for me is to cut the nails close, then finish up with a nail sanding board strip that you can get at any drug store. You can get as close as you want to your fingers and never end up injuring yourself.

So timely. The stretches you recommended are the same ones that my Dr. gave me for my carpal tunnel. They're wonderfully helpful As usual, you are extremely important

From personal experience, I would also say to be careful with you bench height! Last year I decided to swap the unsightly adjustable bench that I had been using for almost 10 years and never had a problem with, for the prettier but not ajustable storage bench that came with my piano, which I never used because I always found it too low for me. That was merely a room decoration decision. The difference in height didn't feel that bad when I played and I thought I would get used to it, but a couple of weeks was enough for me to get tendinitis, lol! But everything is fine now and I changed back to my old bench. 😝

Oh yes you are absolutely right, that’s a very important addition! Thanks for watching 🙏🏻

The bench height is very critical for my arm and hand position, and thus keeping my wrists and hands relax. I have been using for many years a FitBALL Wedge that was first recommended by a physical therapist to keep my spine in proper alignment. I put a terrycloth towel on top of the wedge. It is fabulous and it raises my hips slightly, but not my knees. My spine, arms, and everything are in alignment and I can play in a more relaxed fashion.

When I did office work I used to use similar wrist band. In the end I ended up using 2x tennis wrist bands on top of each other, that was the best solution for me.

Thank you so much for your very helpful advice and guidance, Danae! Unless I missed it, you didn't mention something that's probably too obvious to you, as a professional musican and yoga practitioner: *breathing*... So essential for mental and muscle relaxation -- both while stretching and playing. Another stretching exercice I like to do is interlace my fingers in front of my chest or belly and put my wrists on top of each other, thus stretching the extensors of one forearm and the flexors of the other at the same time, if that makes sense. A 2-in-1 stretch, so to speak. Gently and with both wrists very relaxed, Oh ! and while breathing deeply and slowly, with a Buddha smile on my face, of course! :)

This video was so helpful to watch. My son is 11. We are heading to Carnegie Hall in April for him to perform.. I just try to learn as much as I can in advance so I can always help him. You videos are so helpful and you play so beautifully. I am feeling a little overwhelmed myself but I do not show this to him. He is usually calm as a cucumber and loves to perform. I will continuities you watch and learn from your videos. Thank you very much.

very useful!!...what do you think about wash your hands after the practice ?

Very good point, I always wash my hands before practice and not always after practice, but especially when playing on a public piano, that’s actually a great point. :)

My right thumb was injured at school when i was 13 in physical education class basketball 😥😥 . It was very painful, i had to stop the piano for 2 months and wear a guard to keep the thumb immobile. After that i healed but i was never sure if i had a sequel from the injury. I have zero pain but i have troubles where my metacarp joint of my thumb tends to bend in and get tense. Many decades have passed and to this day i don't know if this is due to bad technique or a from the accident. My left hand thumb has none of that problem but i am left handed so i am not sure about the cause of my right hand thumb difficulties. Nobody can help me.

great video.I am trying to use hand cream now. Do you wash your hands after putting hand cream on before playing the piano, or play with hand cream?

I never play piano with hand cream, I wash my hands before, but I always wear my hand cream right before going outdside. :)
