Great tutorial. My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10. I've made clothes for myself and my kids, but tailoring and altering clothes has always intimidated me. My daughter asked me to take in her jeans around the waist just a few weeks ago. This tutorial made me feel like I could do it. Thank you very much!

I did it! I had two pairs of jeans that were always too big, and I finally took the chance and followed your instructions. Wow, that easing works well with stretchy jeans - so much easier than futzing with darts or taking in. Now my pants won't fall off - thank you!

That was amazing! I was really skeptical when you didnt take anything of the jeans themselves, but the finished result was perfect. I can't believe you took off a whole inch and a half just from the waistband and then just sewed it straight back onto the jeans with no onbvious tucks or gathers. Brilliant tutorial, thank you. :)

Thrifting and altering is excellent! That's how I got started with sewing. I would thrift vintage stuff and then alter them to fit, since I was so picky about the style of clothes in the early 00s. Granted my skills were nightmarish looking back, but where this is a will there's a way!

@@TailorItYourself Where there's a will indeed. When I was as young as you were in the 00's, for me the early 80's, I started teaching myself to sew; once upon a time I made my own Halloween costume (huge black cloak). I got away from such skill building as men (back then) were looked down on if they weren't learning manly skills like hunting and football (never cared for football or hunting). I was always the practical one, eat healthy, make it work, earn and understand money etc. I imagine you as one who gets the practical and the pragmatic of life. All depends on the stretchiness of the fabric and the size of the pants. It's definitely possible. You may need to take in the side seams just a bit to help accommodate the larger amount.

hi trester, thanks for yet another grand video. please allow me one question: i have had a pair of jeans given to me which require that the waist and legs need narrowing, as well as shortening. i am undecided about which step to do first, and would really appreciate your advice. thanks in advance, colin
@TailorItYourself
@TailorItYourself 2 года назад
I would do the waist, then the tapering. Once you've done those, try them on again with the shoes you'll be wearing and mark your hem. The width of the leg and how they sit up on your waist will effect how long the hems are, so you want to do the waist and tapering first.

Beautiful work! I would definitely do this for a good pair of jeans, but I get inexpensive jeans for yard work and not for looks. I do want the waist fit to fit comfortably so I cheat a little bit. I carefully cut two slits about 6 inches apart on the center inside of the back waist and slide in about 4 inches of elastic and stitch it in place closing both openings. It's not beautiful, but it's functional. Thank you for your tutorial!

If a store sold out of your jean size and you bought a 33x31 when you're actually a 31x29...can the jeans be _completely_ tailored (thighs, length, waistband)? If it's possible, what would you charge for such a service?
@TailorItYourself
@TailorItYourself 2 года назад
You can certainly have all that altered, but especially with jeans it may not be worth the money. I would buy a pair and try them in first to see how much different they are and what you actually want altered. Hems are easy. But the combo of taking in the waist and legs will add up. Just depends how much you want to put into them. Could be looking $60-75 for everything. But you may not need all that.

I do have a question though, how much of the waistband can you take in without the risk of puckering? For example, I have about 3 inches to take in, and yours was about an inch and 1/4”. What do you recommend since there is so much of the waistband being taken in? Will this method still work though? Thanks so much!!! Have a wonderful day!

This is discussed in the video. It depends on the size of the jeans to start, and how much stretch is in the fabric. If you find you're having trouble putting the waistband back on you can either take in the side seams a bit or put little darts in the back, or both.

How many inches can you take in the waist band before you need to take fabric out of the main body of the jean? My jeans always gap at the back waist, so I open up the inside of the band on either side, depending on how much gap there is. I then run the widest elastic that will fit inside the band, and pull it as much as necessary. I secure the elastic at both openings, and it works well for me.
@TailorItYourself
@TailorItYourself 2 года назад
That’s a nice alternative! The amount depends on the size of the pants to start and how stretchy the fabric is. I can usually ease up to 3" if the pants are stretchy and they're not a super small pair. Beyond that I usually take in the sides some.

This is such an excellent and clear tutorial thank you! I have just finished taking in the waist of some jeans and it went well, however, I have a quick question. 😊 I took out 2 inches total of my jeans waist so I had to 'ease in' that extra material into the waist band (just as you demonstrated). The problem is that when I try the jeans on, they look great from the front but around the back it feels like they're a bit 'saggy'. I would like to ask is 2 inches too much to ease in without having to alter the seat of the jeans? Many thanks 😊

It all depends on the size of the jeans to start and how much stretch is in the fabric. You may need to take in the side seams a little to take out some of the excess, or put little darts in the back.

Thank you for the clear and easy to follow instructions. I have several pants that I need to alter and am confident I can do it now. Would this work the same if I needed to take out a significant amount of material out of the waistband? I need to take out 4-5 inches, and one of the pairs of pants really have no give/stretch. Polyester/cotton blend 65/35. Also, would this essentially lower the rise of the pant since the waistband is pulled tighter?
@TailorItYourself
@TailorItYourself Год назад
Taking in the waist does not effect the rise. But you may feel like they fit different once you take in the waist because they will likely sit up higher on your waist once there altered and don't drop down. It's possible to take in that amount depending on how big the pants are to start and how much stretch is in the fabric. I discuss this in the video. You may have to take in the side seams a bit or add small darts to the bank if you find you can't ease all the fabric in. Good luck!

It's an old DB2 I bought on consignment from a sewing shop in Milwaukee probably 15 years ago. I don't know much else about it! It's served me well over the years. I would guess it's from the 70s or 80s. Older is better - more metal parts.

@TailorItYourself
@TailorItYourself 2 года назад
There's not really any fabric to let out on jeans. The way they make them doesn't really allow. The only way to make them bigger is to add fabric to the waistband and then the seat of the pants. It's a bit more of an involved process and you'll need to have fabric that closely matches, which can be tricky to do on worn jeans.
@domsusefulstuff

Okay so.... I started this and, ummm there is no waistband on my jeans because it has a strip of elastic on the inside with a flap folded over the top. Is there a way to move the two back panels closer? I'm not even sure what to look for to figure it out.

I just watched 3 of your videos. You are a great teacher! Thank you. As some one who is short waisted, I have found I need to angle the center seam when I take in waist band. This is in an effort to avoid the 'gap'. Perhaps there is a professional way I should be dealing with this issue?
@TailorItYourself
@TailorItYourself 3 года назад
Are you saying you take in the waistband in more at the top than the bottom?
@doh2934
@doh2934 3 года назад
@@TailorItYourself Yes. That is what I do.
@TailorItYourself
@TailorItYourself 3 года назад
That's the way to do it. Angle the seam so it leans more in at the top. There's a limit to how much you can do it smoothly, but that's the way I do it.
@aximaysosa8885
@aximaysosa8885 3 года назад
What do you mean angle the waist seam? I'm short waisted too and it seems like something I should know too 🥲
@doh2934
@doh2934 3 года назад
@@aximaysosa8885 I take in more at the top of the waist band and slant as I am sewing so that when I get to the part of the band that attaches to the pants the seam is angled. You have taken in more where the small of your back is and instead of sewing straight down you slant so you are taking in less as you get to the top of buttocks. Much easier to show than try to explain.

Oh I have a question. My machine really struggles with denim. What machine do you have or is there an affordable machine that works well with both thick fabrics (like denim) and thin ones like silk? :) thankyou!
@TailorItYourself
@TailorItYourself 3 года назад
In the video I'm using my industrial machine, but works well on pretty much everything but may not be the best option for home use if you don't have a dedicated space for it. I recommend getting an older, refurbished machine. I have a beast of a Singer from the 40's that's all metal construction that can pretty much do the same thing as my industrial, it just works slower. I would stay away from any new machines. They tend to me more plastic-y and not as strong. Get a pre-80's used machine from a machine shop near you and you should be set!

I am just curious as to why you took the waist band off on the top all the way around? Couldn’t you have made the adjustments and then just sewed the bottom part back on?
@TailorItYourself
@TailorItYourself Год назад
Taking the waistband most of the way off allows you to ease in the extra amount that's in the seat portion once the waistband has been taken in and is smaller. If you're taking in the seat as well, then you only need to remove as much of the waistband as needed to do the work. But since, in this video at least, we're not taking in the seat portion, you need more length around the waistband to work in that extra amount in the seat portion. This is explained in the video.
