Don't forget us that have rods and screws in our back and hip joint. I've had my jeep for a few years. Even have a brand new soft top that came with it and, well, you guessed it. It's still in my building, and the hard top hasn't come off yet! 🤦♂️
Just LOL when you said you can guarantee that it's gonna rain when you take the top off. I bought my first Jeep Wrangler last week. Took the top off for the first time with beuatiful skies and went to the beach. Sure enough dark clouds rolled in by the afternoon and me and my family did a mad dash home in the pouring rain. Got soaked, but definitley a funny memory and a good lesson learned that you have to check the weather as a Jeep owner. LOL. Whole ride home saying "ROOKIE MISTAKE"
Lol wait till your in Florida waiting in a drive through line and the bottom falls out. I was on vacation with some friends this is the exact situation we found ourselves in. Thankfully i had my soft top on at the time. So me and two buddies jump out and do a Chinese fire drill. Funny thing is we had the top up and windows back in before the line moved 🤣. Cant say that we were that fast or that line was that slow. Either way it was funny and everyone in the line got a kick out of it to.
Even struggling you made it look easy. The spare tire removed is one huge plus but I'm sure you're not 5'9" like me. I wouldn't recommend that anyone try this alone. If not perfectly balanced I've seen them slide down one side of the Jeep. The way it's worked best for me is to get it all undone and have my nephew and son lift the top an inch off the body as I drive away. They then squat and leave it right there. Your videos are fantastic and as a New Yorker I'm definitely enjoying your great accent. Keep it up Pal!
It is absolutely insane that you are able to do that by yourself. I do appreciate the in depth tutorial that accurately explains how to remove all of the hardware keeping the top on. It is spot on and you are absolutely correct that you shouldn't use power tools to loosen or tighten the bolts on a Jeep. That being said, They are stupid heavy and I would recommend even more than 2 people if someone wants to remove the more modern hard top on today's Jeep Wranglers, or purchase one of the many lifts that they have. There are some that are just racks that hold the weight, and others you can just hang from your garage and put the top on or off whenever you want.
Well, I did that before and dropped it on a corner of the hardtop. No real damage, but now I get a friend to help. Oh to be young again and bend down that far and get back up. It's not the weight, it's the awkwardness of getting down.
I couldn’t agree more about the awareness. I’ve seen damage on the corners more times than I can count here at the dealership on trade in. Thanks for watching!
I don't often add RU-vid comments, but I have to commend you for doing that! that is sick. I'm switching from 6 years of ragtop. finally buying that hardtop. I'm pumped!
I appreciate it and you are gonna love it my first 4 years with a Jeep was in a rag top. After I got a hard tip I’ve never gone back haha Thanks for watching!
What an incredibly helpful video. I’ve never taken my hardtop off, but have plans to this summer. You gave little tidbits of information and tips that no other video has shared. Well done, and sharp looking Jeep!
Interesting.....been taking my roof off my 2016 jku Rubicon hardrock for 7 consecutive summers. Roof is too awkward and heavy for such a maneuver, I use a pulley and winch system that works great and is done by one person. Lift the roof off and drive out from under the roof, then winch it back down to the floor. Reverse the process for installation. Saves ones back and prevents any damage to a costly part . But unique way you do it. Though I still have my spare in place on a rear tire rack, gerry can mounts, and over the tire rack
I think if I’m as young as you I would do this but in my middle age this going to crack my back with permanent injury. I been lifting with my kids over the years finally invest in a $800 portable lift Jack and now I can do it all by myself.
I've done this similarly at 42yo with bad knees. Putting it back on was easier than taking it off. I've seen people get magnetic handles to get much easier leverage.
Unsure it would work without the spare tire delete unfortunately. But, def impressed with getting it off alone, let alone being your own camera man! 😂 Keep up the great videos!
Agreed. Getting it around that spare tire with keeping the tailgate open is tricky. Might try closing it and sliding it off the back like he did. Always a fun one man show😅
Thank you for this instructional video. Very informative. You know folks will be definitely taking the tops off after watching this. Thank you for your time. You make a difference in ppls lives when you do videos like this. 🙏🏼
I didn't imagine that roof holds on 8 bolts only, so good engineering! And I wasn't thinking that it's so light so you can take it off by yourself thanks for the video!
You're a hero.... I hope you know that. I've never thought of trying this. God bless you. I watched this video waiting and you actually did what the title said. Man I can't tell you how impressed I am. I shouted when you lifted the hardtop 😂
Very cool!! I bought my Wrangler about 6 months ago New, I've been wanting to pop off the top and doors, only 2 by the way, so that being said with a 2 door it shouldn't be bad getting that top off!! I am buying a soft top for the summer months too!!
Think I speak for all jeep adults with back problems when I say it's not worth it to do it like that man, I use straps and pull under the kids swing set.
What about a lifting machine? I got the top lift pro and it was pricy but I finally get to ride with no top. The doors are easy enough for me to do by myself.
I take the freedom tops off all the time, but I have never removed the rear hard top off my 2015 JKU Rubicon Hard Rock Edition, because it weighs about 140 lbs. even more if yours has the head liner like mine. there are a ton of lifting tools like hoists that run anywhere for $100 to $300- and one-man cherry picker style lifts from $400 - $700. they are pricey, but much cheaper than a back injury. as a long time, Jeep owner, I have had 3, a 95 YJ Sahara, a 2005 TJ Sport X, and my 2015 JKU Rubicon Hard Rock. and I can guarantee any time you take of the top it will rain. I have had the top of my YJ and My TJ, I had the dual top kits with both of those, so when i took the hard top off, I put the soft top on just in case. for My JK, mine came with covers for the freedom panels. I just put them in the covers and store them behind the back seat. The JKU top is significantly heavier that my TJ and YJ tops.
I drove my 2007 Unlimited home on day one... I backed up to two heavy duty stacks of plastic shelves that matched the height of the tub. Climbed inside and lifted the top halfway and then scooted closer to the back and slid it onto the shelves.
I had a 1975 CJ5, V8 with a Mayer metal hard top cab. After Market. I used Armaflex for insulation and sound buffer because it rattled loudly. I took it off by myself very much the same way! It was heavier than yours because top was all connected, front to back. I also had rag tops and Bikini half top. The advantage with the bulky hardtop was I could lock it up. Windows were plexiglass. Great Machine! Kept it over 30 years. Big mistake letting it go!
I once needed one I could take down, so I made a giant sawhorse w/full length 2x4’s. Then attached a pulley in center, a pulley on end(by sawhorse bracket), then an eyebolt on that side’s leg. Then I attached a come-along to eyebolt, then to a rope that I ran thru pulleys.
Ain’t no way I’ll just get the one touch when I place my order Great vid to see your method if you all alone lol u just help me make my decision on the one touch lol😂
Great instructional video! I just bought my jeep last week and I can't wait to take the top off but it looks a bit too complicated to do solo so I'll definitely have to have help! Lol
I just hung ratchet straps from the ceiling. I booked the bottom of the straps to the hard top, ratchet each of the four straps four times and reverse out. I can the still pull back in forward and park the bonnet under the soft top and be able to close the garage door without putting the top back on. I am a 167.5 centimeter, 68 kilo weakling. No strength, skill, nor help, is required. This method works with CJ-7, CJ-8, YJ, TJ, LJ, JK, JL. It may work with aftermarket hard tops made for CJ-3, CJ-5, CJ-6, also. Try this method with old Ram Chargers, and real Broncos, as well. Hang the ratchet straps from bicycle hooks. Now you too can take off hard tops from your beautiful 4x4s with no more investment than £25!
This is a great video. I had 2018 Sahara and never took the top off once, only the panels. I just got a 24 Rubicon and the top is coming off. Thanks, brother. ✌️
I saw that too. Then a Virginia license plate at the end?? lol I'm from Eastern KY, have a 2015 Wrangler Unlimited, bought it brand new 8 years ago, never took the top off haha. Now that I have a garage its coming off soon for this summer!
I swore I wanted a manual soft top, by buddy said drive the sky one for a week.. as soon as I got off the lot with it open it started raining…pushed that button and I was sold 😂 I still love the look of the topless jeep though! (Taking the doors off my 4xe this summer😉)
Dude love your videos. I’ve got a Sahara unlimited. I do it very similarly but I stand behind the rear bumper and list it up, slide it back til it’s about to slide off the sound bar, then reposition and balance and lift it, balance on my head and then walk it next to the house and set the tips down first and crawl out from under it. I’m sure a lot of people don’t have the strength to lift and carry it. I’m a fairly strong, young guy and sometimes I struggle or almost drop it. Mine is scratched to hell. Looking at a 392 now.
Regardless of his ability to do it alone, do not follow that step as you could very likely hurt yourself or damage the top. Prioritize being safe, and use safer methods like hoists, or grab an additional person or two.
That Jeep is badass. Good job, and gotta say, this kid is stronger than he looks. And not sure where's he's from, but he has the Eastern KY accent down
This is a great idea if you’d like neck and back issues or a broken window from dropping your hardtop. Get a lift. You’ve got the convenience of a garage. Screw some eye bolts into the rafters and attach some ratchet straps for a quick and cheap DIY lift and save your back for when you turn 40 and need it!!!
I usually have a custom canvas top made that stores in the back and winter time I put the hard top back on . Since I live in the Oregon cascades it can rain in minutes. I haven’t had one made yet for my 2024 Willy’s but this coming spring it’s on the list
Great job. I am not trying to be the Dad in the comments but I would recommend you wear your seatbelt when driving with the doors off. 1 turn at a good pace and out the door you'll go. I run topless and doors off all the time and I am all for having fun but do it safely.
Dude...FANTASTIC! Well done, great vid.... entertaining and some comedy at the same time. Super cool to see how you did this on your own!! Good stuff, man!
Looks great man can’t wait for the weather to hold to take mine off. Had an unrelated question I should have asked earlier but had not thought about it until you started up. My 392 has a noise rash time I cold start it. Sounds almost like a belt is squeaking. But then after a minute or two if fades away. I took it to my local dealer and they said it was the “Hemi tick”. That this is something that is fairly common with Hemi motors. That is doesn’t do any harm and isn’t correctable. Just wanted to run that buy you as you know a lot about vehicles. Appreciate anything you have to add thanks bud.
I have the same thing but what is the cause of my issue is the catalytic converter gasket. As it warms up its seals and the tick is gone. Thanks for watching!
@@GodspeedZRZ Thanks for the quick reply! So you aren’t to worried about it then? I just wanted to make sure if it was something I should get fixed while it’s under warranty. I did some research and one thing I thought it could be is the hydraulic lifters. Supposedly they have this same kind of squeak or tict but it should only last a few secs. I timed mine and it lasts about 30 seconds. The video I watched from a hemi technician said one could be failing. If it lasts a few minutes so not quite there yet. Just seems longer than it should happen for.
And that’s funny…I’ve gotten caught in the rain so many times. Good way to stop a drought! I’ve thrown the freedom tops on in a pinch without the top but only for driving in town. It works for a drizzle and short ride.
Awesome....I've done a variation of this where you basically have to sit in the trunk, lift, and then walk out with it over your head. This seems much easier since you're already standing when you start lifting. I wonder how easy it is to lift off the ground though. I've been lucky that I've had someone around when it's time to put the roof back on. Awesome video
@@GodspeedZRZ Update....tried this last week. Taking the top off like this only really works if your spare tire isn't attached to the trunk door...mine is 👎. So I may need to find better options...or just deal with it. ha.
You must be 20-something. I remember being strong and flexible enough to do stunts like this.. but those days were nearly 40 years ago for me. I think I'll be making a hoist system. Thumbs upped anyway 👍
I was like oh no my boy did it tho. Great video and seriously one of the sickest Jeeps I’ve seen. When the top was off I was like man it looks good. ✌🏽
