excellent! thank you. i took 12 cuttings from a tuber yesterday. ( i had about 50 tubers and only one made it. i think i may have thrown some good ones away. ) I have about 5 cuttings that made it through the night! they all wilted terribly right away. i mean within minutes. these are the mistakes i made: i don't think i used the right soil. i used a combo of seed starting soil with a succulent soil. i was thinking of drainage. many gardeners in India and the UK talk about compost quite often. i don't trust using our compost for tender plants and seeds. i watered the soil before i put the cuttings in. i see that you put the pots into a water tub to water from the bottom. i also scratched up the sides of the stem (i see some people doing this). i i forced some into the soil rather than making the hole deep enough. i think i've seen people do these things to scratch up the stem for better root growth. more surface are) i used some leaves only. they are all gone now. i forgot to cut just under a set of leaves for some. i saw a video where one gardener sprays the leaves with water to avoid wilting. i'm trying that right now. do you keep the cuttings under light continuously or just for a few hours? other than this i did everything you advised! ha!!

Hi Songbird, cuttings often wilt, but will recover mostly, so long as you protect it by using a plastic bag or humidifier. I agree with cutting back some of the leaf volume. You seem to be doing a lot to try to get them to take. My advice is keep things simple, and be patient - they will probably come through ok.

Hello from Maine. Will the tube that had only one shoot, which you used for a cutting, grow another shoot from the tuber?
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers 2 года назад
Hi Amy, thanks for your question. Yes the tuber will usually continue to put shoots out until it gets tired. This variety (Clearview Audrey) hasn't done particularly well, providing only four shoots so far but it has further shoots at the moment (April 6) and will provide more in time.

Hi there. What’s the green tool that you’re using called? The one beside the pencil/knife?
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers 2 года назад
Thanks for your question. Its called a DIbber! I don't use it much as the holes are not the right shape for cutting or seedling. I usually use a pencil for cuttings and handle of a spoon for seedlings.

Wonderful video as always! If I am doing cutting inside with lights instead of a greenhouse, do you recommend a certain length of time of lights or hung a certain height above the cutting sprout? How often are you watering via water tray? Is maintaining humidity more important than air flow for those first 3 weeks? When do the bags usually come off?

Hi Anna, all good questions, thank you. You sound experienced already so you will know much of this is down to personal experimentation and judgement based on observation. Q1 & 2 : Mine are under lights and this year I changed from CFL lights to LED to reduce power usage. I found the CFL lights produce heat so cant be too close to delicate leaves, the LEDs are maybe 6 inches above the upper leaves (CFL 12"). On timing - I follow the daylight pattern so increase by half an hour every week, but always longer than the day - so in February they are on for 10 hours. Q3: Water tray? I water from above for these. No water until shoot appear, and then as necessary when the compost surface looks dry - maybe every 4-5 days. Q4: They seem to do ok with top cover removed once they get into their stride, so I will remove it at that stage to increase ventilation. Q5: Bags come off once they have rooted which is usually quick (3 weeks?) - you will notice new growth appearing, give it another week then take the bag off and observe - if its too soon they will wilt, and you just put the bag back on. Hope that helps and good luck with your growing!

@@MoorfieldFarmFlowers thank you so much for your detailed answers! I have been watching all your pot dahlia/cuttings series videos and it’s giving me the confidence to try making cuttings myself. This is my first time with an indoor light set up so I have no first hand experience - just trying to absorb as much of your detailed info as possible 😁 last question - would you recommend keeping the cuttings (both pot tubers and new cutting sprouts in their new pot) on heat mats? I’ll be doing this indoors in a room that ranges from 65-72 with little humidity

Hi Anna, apologies for letting this question slip through. Yes! cutting will root much more quickly and safely with bottom heat, but if your ambient temperature is at 65-72 for 24 hours a day then that will be sufficient. Heat mats are thermostatically controlled so they will only switch on if the ambient temperature falls - for instance overnight? If you have room on the mat, so much the better. If not they will do fine in your setup.

i dont have the best luck with trying to root cuttings, i managed to root a few from side shoots. So if you wanted to plant the pot tuber after getting some cutting, can you plant out in the garden?
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers 4 дня назад
Hi Thanks for your question, Yes you can certainly plant the tuber out after taking some cuttings, although the tuber will become depleted as more cuttings are taken, and they are usually smaller than a standard tuber clump so there is less "headroom" to start with. I hope your season is going well.

I’m curious please. If one tuber was infected with Leafy Gall wouldn’t it spread to all the others in the bin? Thank you
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers Год назад
Hi Andrea, thanks for your question. Certainly there is a risk of infecting other tubers, and all efforts should be made to lessen the risk, such as good hygiene and removing infected tubers . In a practical way, the short answer is no, it doesn't automatically spread to all. Susceptibility to infection is dependent on conditions, practices, and varietal variation ( some varieties are resistant). Having said that, if I had a tray of one variety and it became obvious Leafy Gall was present I would destroy the whole tray. What's your thoughts?

Why take a cutting if its only got one shoot
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers 2 года назад
Hi Richard, thanks for your comment. Yes there will be one shoot but the plant will develop into a full many-stemmed plant once it is "stopped". The growing stem is cut just above the 4th pair of leaves (usually), and then new stems will develop from the leaf axils below the cut. I cover the difference between growing dahlias from seeds, cuttings and tubers in another video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zCS-FnL-C18.html Good luck with your growing
