In this video I show you how to take professional portrait shots with your kit lens 18-55 mm lens. We also use it on a crop sensor body the Canon T3I. We go over settings techniques and ways to shoot so that you can get the best possible portrait shots with a lower budget professional DSLR camera.

REVISITING THIS VIDEO, and still appreciating your kit lens information! But I notice that you mentioned shooting in RAW...is that your main preference? I'm primarily a Nikon JPEG shooter, because I don't want to spend too much time in post-processing like folks do shooting RAW...,your thoughts?G

THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO! I just got a backup Nikon camera D3400 that comes with this compact kit lens, and it seems to be super sharp! I'm also going to be placing it on a full frame Nikon D750, which will give me a cropped perspective of 27mm-82mm, and I'm looking forward to that as well. But your information is much appreciated! :)

People who always try to talk abt kit lens, have the most expensive equipment but sub par evidence smh. Learn how to set your cameras with what you got, people. It’s more work but you can get nice shots out of a kit lens until you get more comfortable with diff lenses.

It isn't as bad as he made it look. You can actually pull of some great shots with that lens. Yes, it is entry point; but it does most jobs well.

Another great tutorial. Hey I'm on the lookout for a wide angle lens for my Canon 70D so if you're ever selling one please let me know. Current lot is that but 600D, 18-55 STM, 50ml f/1.8 STM and Canon 70-200ml f/2.8 L lens so if you're getting rid of lenses you think would be useful pls let me know thanks.

Zoom all the way out get as close as you can do the subject with the framing you need. Then make sure there is distance from the foreground and background

Set your F point at it's lowest. You can achieve that even without zooming

Bablu Kumar both are good lens...85 is more of a beauty lens...used extensively by fashion photographers...though personaly i prefer 50mm fr portraits...see its a matter of preferance

Take sigma 18 - 35 mm....beat ever lens if you are using Nikon dslr

I would say 50 on a crop sensor and 85 on full frame IMO

It depends on the lens you are using and the need depth of field for the picture. If you are using the 18-55mm then about 6-10ft away.

Not easy to do you need a lot of distance from the subject and the background have the lens fully zoomed at 55mm then make sure you fstop is at 5.6

@@NiaziMujahidKhan This lens is hard to get the blurred background because you really need a faster lens like an f/2.8 or f/1.8 look at the Canon 50mm f/1.8 it is under 100 usd

You wont get anything interesting with a kit lens. I was gifted a bunch of different lenses, but I'm going to microcenter to buy a lens capable of 2.8

n.e.v for babies, you'd want a fast shutter speed to ruduce motion blur. Around 1/125 or higher depending how fast the child is moving. Hope this helped you. You can shoot slower shutter speeds if the child isn't moving at all

Put the subject close to the camera... nd make f point to 3.5 ... boom u will get awesome blur even with 18-55 lens

This is kinda stupid. On 55mm, and 1/125th shutter, it will blur in as heck for me. This isn't even close to help me lol. Sorry if I sound rude, but I'm so full of this "the kit lens are great" bs. Maybe, if you have a steady hand, and steel of nerves.

The more you zoom the trickier it gets. 16mm isn't too bad just get close to the person and keep iso at 100 and shoot in natural light.

Kinda true. I just learned to shoot always at a minimum of 1/200. That way I could stabilize it even at 55 mil. When I'm doing fullbody shots, I use it at 16mm, but I bought a 50mm m42 Helios, modded it with focus rings. Right now I'm trying to learn to use it in full manual. Because it's a fantastic little glass. :)
