I've had the Mac Ride since Kickstarter - relatively expensive, but what a revelation. It has been brilliant for bonding, passing on my limited riding tekkers, even travelling away with it! Young fella started out on the Wee Ride, where he could nap on the pad while I rode. I help him up hills these days using a Big Little Tow Bike Tow Strap from NZ - a hybrid of the TowWhee and Trax: robust and simple, yet easy to remove. The 'money's no object' MTB parent could start from the cradle (3M>5Y) with Tout Terrain's €1400 Singletrailer (from Danny Daycare) and top off (4Y>8Y) with their €1200 Streamliner hitch-mounted suspension trailer bike...
I used a Chariot, expensive indeed, but it had suspension, so kid could handle fire roads. There are also single-wheeled trailer, better suited for off road. Also, consider the tag-along option. Now that my son has outgrown the trailer, we often ride together with a Roland Add+.
That rear child seat brings back memories, I used to pick my lad up from nursery when he was little and within 2 minutes he'd be asleep in the chair and as a result i spent most of the journey home one handed with the other holding his head up 🤪
@@embn Yeah works great hook up a thule dbl chariot to it no problems kids love it .Just measure your old axel and match the treads to diagram on site cant fo wrong
Great video. It really resonated with me. My last three children were all raised riding in a seat on the back of "Dads bike". I would have preferred the front seat but whilst they're still babies the back seat is perfect.
I always carry one towwhee on my backpack, I bought it to bow my kids but it's great when you run out of battery in a ride with your friends. But it you hook it directly to your saddle as the manufacturer propose it's better as you have more tyre clearance for the back wheel and you don't have to buy the "easy" remove hooks which are optional. :-)
This is a good video! As usual. Thanks Embn. I have to add though that there are much safer better bikes to use. 20" X 4" fatbikes offer lower COG and more comfortable riding position for everyone. Plus benefit of being able to put both feet flat on the floor if needed with a more comfortable riding position as the pedals are further forward. Also much more grip and a stiffer frame. But I guess if you already have an eMTB these are some great options.
I've tried several kinds and the best ones are the front mounted ones. They are safer, weight distribution is natural and you don't kick the kid when getting off the bike. Kids also like the view better:) However, the one I have-Bobike something is way better than the one you showed. Its mount replaces several A headsed spacers and stays there when not in use and doesn't interfere with riding when seat is off. You can get extra mounts for different bikes. Seat has back rest which acts as protection and has 3point belt. Also doesn't have this insane bar that goes from headset to seatpost. I had it mounted on both full sus ebikes that I own, so I would say it is universal. It was about the price of the tow rope you showed us. The only concers are steerer lenght and weight limit (15kg)
Bobike great for touring around town, for carrying toddlers strapped in to a large shell - which sits up way too high for MTB. Mac Ride is designed and purpose-built for off-road & single track with small features, whilst comfortable enough for a 100km day tour. Age range is huge for child bike seats - from almost 2, right up to about 6; and 30kg. Your passenger sits much lower, inside your C of G, with much adjustability, thanks to the mounting bar (which keeps everything off the frame, your child is safely secured by comfy feet straps and doesn't require a massive bracket on the front. Mac Ride's way more expensive but you get years of fun while your co-pilot learns MTB riding - literally hands-on, with very good resale value when they're up and about on their own 24'!
Does anyone know the brand of the rear child at 5:08? I spoke to Thule on the ride along which is similar but they dont recommend putting it on the back incase the tyre accidentally hits the chair
Is it safe to use a factory stock seat post as a mounting point for the rear child seat? I want to mount a rear child seat for my full suspension mountain bike. But I plan to ride it on the road with my son. But I am having trouble with the frame mount and am a bit hesitant to use the seat post for the mount.
The perfect seat doesn't exist. My boy out-grew his front mounted thule seat and he's not even 2.5 yet. He fell asleep on numerous rides, I then had to ride one handed while supporting his head. I don't know how you'd manage with that weeride and its also dependent on the child holding on. The rear seats aren't designed to be mounted to a seatpost nor used off road but thats what i've just moved to. I had to buy an optional bracket to raise the child seat higher as the standard bracket wouldn't work on any bike. The trailers are just too wide/bulky to store or ride on the road without fear of being clipped by a car
I use linked inner tubes to tow my kids. They don't damage your bikes and for me at least, they are free because I have loads of 26" tubes left over from previous bikes.
That's a great idea Steve! Hopefully, you use enough tubes that there is no chance of one breaking. It's would probably be unlucky but it would be bad news if one was to snap.
We went to Gisburn a few years back and the wifes friend turned up with a behind baby seat and a two yr old. We went round the redrun with the kid screaming with laughter. I was beside myself with fear...this family were like ...nah its good.
We use the Thule Chariot for my Liv Intrigue E+ and needed to get the Robert Axle adapter to fit but works perfectly. We’re now trying to fit the Thule Yepp Nexxt Mini seat on my husband’s Giant Trance E but the store said they couldn’t legally fit it because it is not meant for eMtbs. The neck spacers also need to be removed to fit the clip fitting which is apparently not recommended to do…. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem or is the seat completely unsuitable for our bikes? Should also mention we aren’t off-roading with these fittings.

Hello Mayte Someone can Help me with the haibike 3.5 the mac ride can suit perfectly without the extender ebike to make it larger ? Other question the seat ok the back i m scared about my telescopic seat is it ok or dangerous to break it ? Thx a lot ?

Or anyone could recommend a baby seat for an ebike trek powerfly 7 for a reasonable price? i have my eyes on the shotgun combo baby seat but my son is only 1 year old and i dont want to spend a lot of money for just a year of usage. thank you
You mentioned the trailer causes cars to give you alot of room when overtaking. Considering the amount of road bikers killed/hit by cars every year you would have to be insane to take a small child out on a main road. Inside neighborhoods is probably fine though.
The thule chariot is awesome trailer turns from pram into trailer child is well protected rolled mine with 2 kids in not a scratch on them the bar mounted seats can be doggie if you come off you will crush child a friend crashed when there chikds foot went into his wheel
That baby isn’t older than 16 months. How the heck are you riding a bicycle, with a baby not even strapped in; let alone a safety bar around him or a belt around both of you? Even if you teach him, what if he gets sleepy and drops his hands for a second? Or you hit a bump and he goes flying? Maybe I’m not seeing something, but I just don’t get that.
The seat in the front looks horrible. If you have to slam the breaks the kid might smash its face at the stem or the handlebar. Also the kid is not protected at all of you fall over. It just crashes on the floor.
I thought exactly same,, what a poor video this and shows no safety for the child, should be took off RU-vid, I felt sorry for the lad little lad on front poor thing was scared to let go
