Yes, the colloquial and even vulgar words are a part of the language. You need to learn them not necessarily to use them but to understand them.

Many English speakers may not realize that katar (post nasel drip) is an English (and French) word too: catarrh which is pronounced kuh-taa. biegunka translates directly as: the runs, from the same verb.

Kiedy mam kaszel i katar: Czy wyrażenie "jestem przeziębiony" jest mniej powszechne? (Pytam, ponieważ w języku niemieckim częściej mówi się "ich bin erkältet" = "przeziębiony").
