As an aerospace enthusiast it's such a miracle that these little ultra high performance creatures don't smolder and burst into flame given their sky high metabolism.
@@pressaltf4forfreevbucks179 it really is. I feel like we're missing some crucial mechanical component that creatures like hummingbirds have, and if we had it we'd live in almost a golden age
actually, at their size, they lose heat incredibly fast as well as generate it, these creatures have a number of methods of disposing waste heat, but its more impressive the methods they use to RETAIN heat. since most if not all of the sugars they drink are used to fuel the flight muscles, hummingbirds actually go into a kind of semi hibernation when night falls and its time to sleep. its during this period of nightly hibernation, or during a longer migration, that the animal will tap into their very limited body fat reserves.
@@darkclawgreatonenasright, their metabolism and energy expenditure are crazy. I wonder how their adrenal system works being that they're basically on cocaine high alert all day 😂
Imagine, you only think it stopped moving its wings when actually it just went into hyper boost mode and its moving its wings faster than the speed of light!!!
My sense of humour has been so mutilated by the internet I started laughing because the buzzing was getting louder and quieter as it moved back and forth
@@schuylermorgan9627 do birds have a swallow reflex thought? Or do they just put their heads back to funnel food and liquid down like that commenter pointed out to you...lol
I think it actually was because at first it seemed to be kind of scared of the bubble then he realizes it only happens when he drinks so he doesn't have to be scared of it, he trying to figure out if it a danger to him or not
My grandpa (According to my grandma) had always had a fascination with birds. Ever since he was little he worked hard to tame birds on all his free time. One day I went to his house and saw multiple birds waiting on the table. As he said “For decades I have fed these birds and their moms.” “That’s how they trust me so much.” I admire him more because when he walked outside. A pidgin with one leg came out and landed n the table he was sitting at. He got up and went to his garage. He came back with a pack of bird food. The pidgins name was Joey and he died 3 weeks ago. The good news is Joey had a wife and kids so there’s a high chance the kids will grow up with him too :)
Your grandfather will live in the lives he saved. And in the memories of those that thrived because of him. And he will live on in the tales that the birds will tell their children. Of an odd tree that would always provide no matter the season, no matter the weather.
my uncle owned pigeons and when he had kids he decided to release them. there were a couple that would come back to visit every day. A bond with a bird can be a strong as a dog's :)
Hummingbirds aren't difficult to 'tame' really...since they can notice and seek out humans, especially those who refill their feeders. They're very intelligent. I have tons here in SoCal & this one started looking for me through my sliding glass door! So I went to fill up the feeder she likes and she came right from her little branch. They will literally sit on the feeder while you're there (or fly in your face) if you're with them enough :) Just spend time with nature--you'll see!
@Victoria Ekarika Usually to make your own nectar to attract hummingbirds you use cane-sugar/beet-sugar mixed with water (spring water preferred but tap is ok to) I got most of the info from this article: www.hummingbirdsociety.org/feeding-hummingbirds/ Hope this helped!
The unnoticed bit about this video is that getting the hummingbird to sit on their fingers means the hummingbird is able to get a huge meal without having to constantly burn that energy with flying. This means the hummingbird gets an effortless meal, and so a benefit over others nearby
@@dickrichard626 I soon noticed that you don't know what you're talking about. 😂 Per gram of weight, hummingbirds consume the most energy per minute among the animals. They have a fast metabolism that requires them to ingest nearly twice their weight in nectar every day. It takes a lot of energy to move as fast as they do; their heartbeat is 1,200 times per minute during the flight.
@@akilarodrigues7065 Prove it without referencing unverified claims. Thanks. Also that is just irrelivant to what I said in regards to the main comment anyway. I don't think it matters that much that the hummIng bird got to rest for a few seconds while eating, because the humming bird doesn't need to rest like that and the amount of rest it got was basicaly nothing anyway and on top of that, it does nothing for making it have an advantage over other humming birds. I didn't even write anything that you can say that "I don't know what I'm talking about." and you just spouted of some bogus facts that mean nothing. 😅😂
@@dickrichard626 I do not need to prove anything, I have already said what I had to say, if you doubt you are on the internet, research yourself, it is quite easy you knew?
@@akilarodrigues7065 Your the one making claims. I don't need to do $#!+. I don't think it matters that much and it more then likely doesn't matter that much. So what? The burden of proof is on you.
As a kid I'd stand for hours at the hummingbird feeder with my finger for a perch. When they landed on my hand, I used to bring them up to my chin to touch their feathery heads, and it was the best thing on earth.
Almano Tolrado annoying catch Phrase ,much ?🙄oohhh you’re soooo relevant....So edgy trying to insult someone on the internet... wow ! You must feel so above it all bc of that .. stfu dude ! There was actually a hummingbird who set their nest in front of our house once. It was the tiniest nest you could imagine, like a fuzzy cup. The hummingbird had a blue and pink egg btw They were so cute and smooth looking but we didn’t touch them They all lived off of the flowers on our roof And then they left and a pregnant spider took refuge on the nest : ‘ )
My relative has a very big garden and when was sitting looking at the flowers I saw a humming bird go inside a plant and when I looked it went a way but I saw a little thing and every day it grew bigger and one day it was gone I didn't touch it but I looked closely to make sure it was gone but the nest fell but thank god there weren't any baby humming birds but I saw little eaten pieces or worms so I was sure it was humming birds 💖☺️
My 81 year old mother has kept a hummingbird's nest I bet you for that last 60 years! Luckily, there are no eggs in it. She keeps it in a little trinket container! And, like you're saying, it's so very small! I always stop to look at it when I'm dusting for her. Thanks for sharing your story!
When I was little, I thought that hummingbirds had no feet or legs, and that they just flew everywhere and never touched the ground, I had no idea they had nests. I just thought that they flew around forever
RxseyPxsey they basically do fly around for their entire lives. They need to consistently find nectar to eat to get their energy to fly, or else they'll probably die. That's why their wings are moving so fast
We have this annual honeysuckle bush that started attracting hummingbirds back in 2014. What was so cool is that they kept coming back to the bush several times a day. Before that point, I was under the impression that they stopped to eat and kept going wherever they were headed never to return. Fortunately I was wrong! Then, just last summer of 2022, we got two feeders to hang outside our kitchen window. I realized that the trick isn’t feeding them without scaring them away. It’s restocking their food without them following you in the house! 😅
They're really smart to understand that their mobility helps them escape from real threats. I remember seeing one hover between my mother and I as she was restocking the feeder for them. It's like the hummingbird wanted to find out who was refilling it. And clearly, it didn't have the slightest fear of being attacked as it literally forced its way between two giant creatures.
Scott Montgomery Yep! Capture the enemy and strap 'em to a pole and superglue their eyes wide open, then pop two of them yellow flowers off that feeder and superglue them to their eyelids so the hummingbirds drives their beak into their eyeballs all day long!🤗....bwaahaahaaahhaa And don't forget to make a video for RU-vid!!🎥
Imagine trying to describe a hummingbird to somebody who's never heard of it before. "It's a bird that flies like a bug, man!" They would think you're high or something.
I have done this many times at my feeders, it's even easier on a busy feeder because they are so competitive. Have had as many as six birds sitting on both hands.
Minecraft should add hummingbirds I would 100% try to tame it or capture it They also need to add the sounds that the hummingbird's wings make so I can say "Hehe Hummingbird go brrrbrrr
Paloma San Basilio yes they do have to trust you by seeing you very often. The more they see you, the closer you can get to them. They are very skittish at first. If you even move while watching them eat they will fly off.
They are competitors in nature, both feeding on flower nectar. They fit the same niche of pollinators. Both have developed long mouths to reach in to flowers, and both can hover over the delicate flowers shaking in the wind. It is inevitable that for reasons of functionality, bees and hummingbirds have similarities.
Beautiful, precious and amazing the way these fantastic creatures survive. I have always enjoyed them. We had them all over my great-grandmother's yard. She had lots of flowers, fruit trees and herbs. PARADISE! LOVED your video!
Kovu Kk my sister had hummingbirds that would let us do this. It took her a long time (weeks) of going out everyday, wearing red, moving closer and closer to the feeder. You have to sit very still. But after they trusted her, my 3 boys and I were even able to do it at her house.
The ones that my house ate out of my hand the very same day I tried I just used the hummingbird feeder they were using and put it in my hand they came that day and ate out of it in my hand
I can't even get them to come drink out of the hummingbird feeders. They'll only sometimes go feed from the flowers in my side garden. I Love birds so much especially hummingbirds, but how do i get them to come eat out of the feeder.?
Live4Christ Today mix 2 cups warm distilled water with 1/2 cup of granulated sugar. For a larger batch its 4 cups water and 1 cup sugar. Buy the cheap stuff....dont put any food coloring or red dye into the water. Hummingbirds dont need red colored stuff thats just a myth. Put Your feeder outside and enjoy. If You get the right mix of water and sugar the hummingbirds will eat it up!

They sound like bees on steroids in person. I had a ruby-threaded hummer land on my shoulder when I was working in my garden. I first thought that it was a bumble bee until I looked over at it.
The precision. Between their steady hovering and the ability to stick it's beak in and out of that tiny hole so quickly without accidentally bonking it on the side.
A fill up station with a nice and warm parking place... It is so wonderful how these birdies are drinking with so much trust in you! Thanks for the video, lovely greets from Germany! 🥰🥰🥰
I have three questions, 1. How long did this take to do? 2. Has the bird ever pooped on you wile doing this? 3. Is the bird now your crime fighting sidekick?
Hm, a superhero named the hummingbird... there is definitely some superhero named that, but I never read comics so I wouldn't know. What powers would they have? Levitation or flight? Biceps 30% of their weight? A two foot long tounge? The power to absolutely chug a sugary drink?
It's so strange to see how effortlessly and how quickly it moves in the air like that.. it's accurate with its beak, and I don't even know how its wings can beat so insanely fast. Nature, you crazy.
Dana14me Hettinger Technically. They just have complete mastery over the maneuver. Many birds can sort of _jump_ backwards, esp. in surprise, flapping their wings to bolt themselves back. But none of them can actually fly backwards. Hummingbirds can fly in all directions: left, right, up, down, in front, behind, hover in place, and upside down.
