I'm so glad you're showing people how to use positivity to teach. I get upset when I see videos of people laughing while a cat in a harness falls over. That's obviously not pleasant for the cat.

It can be normal at first for a cat to fall a bit as they aren't used to it, especially if you start when they are very young. However, it shouldn't be anything too bad and it's more if an awkward movement.

It's funny and it doesn't hurt them. If it's not for more than a few seconds and you're actually trying to get the cat to like the harness, it's hilarious. And I love cats. I apologize when I do anything to them. All they're doing is flopping over.

Great review video. My elderly gentleman cat learned to harness walk at 8 years old and still prefers it to his carry crate if we are going short distances to the vet. He's very chill personality and is not food motivated, but loves grooming so he got toothbrush grooms on his face and cheeks as his reward - whatever works right? I use a cloth vest harness attached with Velcro because he's broad across the chest and skinny hipped so I figured webbing harnesses would be backed out of.

My cat Blue is part Maine Coon and has always been naturally outgoing. He LOVES people and noises, which is weird for a cat. I'm using your leash and harness training techniques now and it's working. Can't wait to take him to the park one day. I have to remember to do flea and tick treatments for both cats before we make that next leap, even though only the one cat is going outside.

CATMANTOO, we rescue 2 adult cats, at 2 different times. Put harness and leash on them (separately), took them to parks/bike trails, had no problems. They walked very well - not like a dog, but great for cats. Don’t know if previous owners trained them, or if they were just grateful to be outside. Both cats (ages 3 and 7) are strictly indoors. We enjoy your videos.

My cat is already fully trained, but I would like to ask, what's your take on doing this with older cats? (from 1 year old and up). I started training my cat when she was 1, and she's perfect on the leash (sometimes she tries to take me in whatever direction she wants, but other than that she's good), but can be extremely frightened of parks/larger open areas. She does great on the beach (we worked on it for a couple of days) but with larger parks (acreages), it's really hard for her to adapt to it, and we've been there several times but she is really frightened and tries to drag me away. She's fine with people and dogs, but its just the open space that scares her and she is not food motivated AT ALL, nor toy/play motivated so that makes it harder to train her. I have taught her sit, and high five but she will not listen at all when frightened. Would really like your advice on this!

Hello, That's why I say in the video don't set your cat up to fail, only visit places your cat likes, or take a more systematic approach when introducing your cat to strange places. exposing them in small doses making those experiences positive, and keep doing that many times. most importantly if your cat isn't responding to the lowest levels of exposure, then stop trying there and try a place more suitable for your specific cats tolerance level. If you want to take your skills to the next level, join us on patreon.

Hi! First off: great video! Thank you! My cat (a british shorthair) is used to the leash and has no issues having it on. He is a very calm cat. Does not bite or scratch when aggravated. But he hates people so much, I cannot get him to get used to them. He walks around the neighborhood and when he sees a dog he just lays down and stays down until they are gone. But when he sees people, even from 100m away, he gets so scared, he runs off. He does not respond to treats or any rewards outside of the flat. Is he too stressed? Also, mostly I follow him rather than him following me. I cannot find a park without people and I really should not get up at 5am to walk him :D . What can I do?
@hideyoshinagachika1186
@hideyoshinagachika1186 4 года назад
I'd slowly socialize him with people you know and trust to be calm and respect his boundaries. I've been trying to help a stray who's very scared (runs from me if I look different and seems nervous if I smell different for some reason) and he responds best to people who move very slowly, talk quietly and kindly, and never ever touch him unless he comes to them. I suspect he was abused, though, so I'm treating him that way- he was around my area when he was younger, and used to be a very friendly, relatively brave cat before he went missing for a few months. I'd look into tips for socializing abused cats, even if yours wasn't- they're generally good advice for cats that are fearful of people for any or no reason. (This is just coming from my own personal experience.)

How to teach a cat how to walk on a leash - 1. Get a harness. Generally ones that give have more space for the body to show is better, but that’s just me. 2. When a cat is eating, put the harness on quickly. Immediately distract them with toy after. Repeat this a couple times each day- during the process make sure to let your cat outside, explore the outdoors. Make sure all of these activities are supervised with treats. 3. While on the harness attach the leash, get a treat and get it to come up to you. Slowly go farther and farther. Make sure no negative reaction is displayed and use talking cues . 4. When a cat seems comfortable with the harness, leave it on for longer around the house. Maybe start using the leash part . Also repeat the third step in different areas. 5. Eventually your cat will end up being able to go for a walk, make sure to start off by walking in a small space. ‼️If they start wobbling or look scared then that means they aren’t ready for the next step. ‼️

This was really hard for my baby cute little pumpkin and she screamed at the top of her lungs at the door. So I bought her a leash and a colar, just so she can enjoy going outside a bit but under my supervision so she doesn't hurt herself with the stitches. Weirdly enough I didn't have to do any training, putt the colar on without any difficulties same for the leash. Of course she's not following me, it's more like I follow her but today she got inside a bush and I had to pull on the leash, which she didn't like very much obviously. That's why I watched this video, to be honest I didn't even think about giving her a reward, I'm a dumbass

Thank you for the video! I had to like and sub. I taught my cat how to roll with straight repetition as a kitten. Making dogs look like morons. Unfortunately she was hit on the highway i live on. Even though i live off the road a little ways. I feel that stray cats cause my cats to be scared and run off, and or run across a highway. Especially at night. I willlllll shoooot cats that are not my kitties. Punk ass cats causing 2 of my babies to get hit in just the past year alone. Onlyyyyy reason why 2020 and 2021 have sucked. Had them since they were kittens. Mama was my baby and got hit, and one of her kittens. Thankfully i still have one of my baby's kittens. Bren Bren. I have no hard feelings about killing a cat that isn't mine. I know alot of cat lovers are on here, but if you live in the country, keep your cats inside at night, or blast the intruders.

I don't like the leash around the neck! It should be a body harness! NOT jerking their neck around! That is so WRONG! How would you like that???? It hurts their neck too! Not a good thing to do all all!

My cat is a bengal mix and REALLY wants to go outside. I can't let him roam, I'm so scared he'd get lost or hurt. Hopefully this works for him so he can get some safe outdoors time

I don't know why we act like it has to be either total freedom or totally trapped for cats. You can train them to go on a leash. It's just not culturally the norm for some reason.

Problem with my cat. I want to enjoy my backyard without running behind him. My cat has no problem with leash but he runs. If I pull him from going anywhere he knows the trick how to removevthe leash. Not sure what i am suppose to do. Cant leave him alone without leash as i know he tries to go to backyard of neighbours.

Thanks!! I used some of your advice and now my cat literally runs like a dog on the leash in the mountains. I need to take her every single day or she won’t let me sleep! Her she is :) m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LOvJ8WbGW9M.html

Is it possible to make an outdoor cat turned indoor only, happy? How? Please give tips if possible. How do you keep your cat happy indoors? They get bored easily.

Mines scared of the outside but at the same time intrigued. And giving treats wont work to make her feel comfortable outside because she gets crazy when she hears a bag with treats open and will try to smack it out of your hands. She does however feel fully comfortable walking inside with a leash but outside? Heck no.

Cats are such free and independent souls that it's a wonder that some of them tolerate a leash, leashes are for submissive dogs.

I can't even get to the point where my cat lets me put the harness on. He's 1 year and four months, and I used to let him play outside for a couple hours every day until he got bit by a snake. He hasn't been outside in about a month and a half and he REALLY misses it and cries whenever someone leaves or enters the house. I just started clicker training again, and for now I've been putting one of his favorite treats in the middle of the harness laying on the floor. I'm thinking the next step should be to have him poke his head through the harness to get to the treat (last time I got to this step he would panic after sticking his head through the harness 5 or 6 times and run away and hide). Thoughts? He's very high energy, very curious, and a huge diva who likes doing things his way. He is much more motivated by play and attention than food, but there are a couple treats that he's willing to stick his head through the harness for.

Anyone have tips for a cat that gets a bit too explorative when outside? If we pick him up to redirect him, he will do his best to launch himself away, claws out. He is food motivated inside, so I'm trying the leash/follow training now, but outside he is too stimulated to care about food so I'm worried he will also not be as responsive to us

I plan to leash train my two cats here soon, but I’m not sure if my area is the best. I would be walking them on a forest trail. Would the birds, insects, and other animals create too much of a distract for my two cats?
